Stealth characters fighting dragons

They'resupposedly a big part of the game. How's this gonna work? You can't exactly get a killshot by sneak attacking them, can you?

When he's flying, a bow is more useful than a sword. Then you can hide and force him down to the ground to root you out. Slice his soft bits, flee, repeat.

1. You go right back to spamming your dagger or bow attack after that first sneak-attack while evading/dodging the Dragon.

and/or

2. You are a smart stealth character, and have Invisibility/Chameleon spell or potion handy so you can get off more sneak-attacks during the battle.

and/or

3. You hope Skyrim's Sneak-skill might have some awesome perks that basically do #2.

Oblivion's Stealth skills : Acrobatics, Light Armor, Marksman, Mercantile, Security, Sneak, Speechcraft

Marksman. Marksman. Marksman.

Oh boy, this will be so tricky!

Read page 51 of the GameInformer article, brown box. Slower firing bows; harder hitting bows; design intention is to allow steathly characters to one-hit-kill targets from distance.
So, higher damage bows, on top of a high sneak attack critical modifer will be huge damage.
Every will be arrow doing more damage as well.

Stealth characters will probably find Dragons easiest. Combat characters will have to ground them. Magic characters will have to manage Magicka reserves. Stealth characters just have to bring enough arrows.

Special dragon poison! :o

Throw a piece of gold in somewhere.
Dragons tend to be hording creature and will usually go after said gold. And while their busy looking....

Stab them in the eye or some other tender area.

If you can drop gold that is. You could go all Bilbo style by stealing the dragons gold cup and letting some other guy take care of the rest after telling him about the tender spots.

In games like Deus-Ex, the solution would be the sneaker could go to places that others could not go, and activate something that would kill/deeply wound the target to help them finish the job, here a mage can also easily do the same thing.

And what would be the certain something that could help the sneaker characters with killing a full blown Dragon? A group of handy hill giants around ready to be lured into a fight with the dragon? Or a huge boulder above the high drop of a mountain that only good sneakers could find the way and reach without being found out beforehand?

I don't know, but implementing a balanced game-play for each archetype, in such an open world, would be a though one.

The fighter type have the most straightforward solutions, because they can always use the brute force and go strait for the heart of the problems, and eliminate them.

The mage type, are fragile, but have even more damage potential for their opponents, especially with area effect spells, and can have all the defense potential of the fighter type, with defensive spells, and they have the option to to it from far away, and with spells like "open lock", and "Invisibility" they can have all the advantages of the rogue type as well, so with the right arsenal, they can do it all.

The rogue type, are the ones that really need some help in this era, because they are the binary type, either they can keep performing sneak attacks and keep out of sight, which would make them virtually invincible, or they can not do it which would make them really vulnerable. And they do not have any advantage that the mages could not have as well.

So we have to think about a system that would make each archetype a distinct, but balanced experience.

This really needs some though. :grad:

I think people are looking into this way to much. For all we know dragons might be easy kill mobs that we just have to spend time searching for.

I am reminded of the scene with Bilbo and Smog suddenly.

But I do think that the Dragon Powers that the player gets will help Stealth characters get an edge that he or she wouldn't normally have.

I suppose it will take a lot of hit and run strikes. Hit from the shadows, then run and hide until it turns its back, then hit again :ninja: . It's the longest approach but adds well to the variety of doing things.

Well, one solution can be better balanced perks for Marksman/Ranged skill, Sneak skill, and the skill that helps with Dagger attacks, which would make the attack potential of the rogue type of characters in par with the other types, without compromising the balance.

An armor penetrating high level perk for Marksman skill would be good for negating those hard scales, or precise shooting that would target special weak spots of the high level foes, a spot which would be hard to reach for other archetypes.
