Stealth isn't working, especially not the lv 5 sneak perk

Post » Sun Nov 29, 2015 11:56 pm

10 Points in Agility, 5/5 in Sneak, only lether or no armor at all and 3 enemies can spot me easily trough some walls. They didn't see me, but they start attacking me. Op succes.

Also the last perk of sneak has no effect. I can't even loose the "danger" focus of enemies while entering sneak again accros the street behind another house.

Did somebody else notice something similuar?

4 points agility 0/5 sneak, heavy armor and yesterday I punched a machine gun turret cause it started shooting me as I was in a range of ~1 meter xD

Yeah, something seems to be broken^^

I am wearing the leather enhancements with stealth bonus and vault suit. Shot a turret from outside vats range and every ghoul within 200 yards came running towards me. I was crouched and in the shade. Level 14 and still haven't found a silencer or can make one, if it will even help.

Weapon bench home slice, Gun Nut level 3 I think.

They definitely changed the stealth gameplay as far as I can tell, it's not like fallout 3 or New Vegas where you can stealth up to a Raider and shove a chicken up his ass lol...

You have to be careful and watch what you doing...

I think after games like Skyrim they have nerfed stealth. I remember sneaking while reading a shout and then turning around and seeing what I thought was a statue of a dragon. I got right up to it and curiously hit it with a sword and it came to life, that sneak was really OP.

I'm glad they fixed sneak and I actually have to be tactical. Yesterday I attacked a satellite array full of a certain creature with a sniper. First they sent their dogs for me. (Makes sense, you can't sneak pasta dog). Then they sprayed in my general direction and shot missiles. Finally they walked a very long way to come look for me (I couldn't see them without my scope before). I had to play it smart and hide and it was a lot of fun!

It made sense.

Was in Hubris Comics. Ghouls heard me and stirred from their slumber, walking around looking for me. I had jumped up on the desk in one of the upstairs offices with 3 of them in the same room. They couldn't see me.... I think I had a thick layer of mud on my body or something

edit: should have added, I only took the first level of sneak, no armour perks.

Good to know thanks... I put one point into sneak because it initially does 20% but only goes up 10% thereafter and was wondering if I should put more points into it.

One suggestion I have is if you haven't already, craft some armor with muffling into the legs and try sneaking again. If sneaking is more "realistic" in this game I'll keep that in mind though. You'll need armor crafting at level 2 to do this. I can sneak reasonably well if I don't run though nothing like previous games.

What is somewhat broken is that companions don't seem to affect your ability to sneak or lose your hidden status... even one decked out in power armor running around does not get noticed. I kind of like that, it makes having a companion more viable, but it's not very realistic.

lol...Yeah you definitely have to play smart in 4. I've had some close calls and it's always fun listening to the enemy dialogue.

Thats not entirely true.

When i still had to deal with the dog, most of the time random enemies started shooting at my dog, while i was still undetected.

Cause they found me once they walked up on the dog to kill him but well.

Yeah agreed, Sneak WAS op in the previous games. It does work in this, I too have spent a lot on Sneak enhancing gear, put most of my points into Agility and Sneak etc. It is much more lifelike though, no real easy way to sneak up on an enemy as so much more is taken into consideration. No matter how good your perks are, if you are wearing armour and moving, they will hear you. Move slowly, invest in Muffled on your gear, stick to the shadows and only use the left anolog stick very lightly (creep don't run). You will still see caution, if they hear or smell you or if someone has died. You can still get the sneak critical bonus in Caution mode however, just not on the enemy you just shot after it has already been damaged. I am always showing caution, but they never really find me because I follow these rules.

I've gotten 10 sneak crits in a row on the same creature with my silenced pistol. Silencers allow you to crit a lot more. But yea, even if enemies can't find you they will shoot in your direction if you shoot them multiple times, if you move they tend to still shoot where you were so its more of a the bullets came from that way im gonna just unload over there. they tend to be rather lucky with their shots though.

I have just got a silenced sniper and 10mm pistol, I haven't tested that yet but while I still show caution just as much, I sneak crit far more often and they never actually find me. Guess silencers are the way to go then! I am much preferring the sneak mechanics in this as they are more challenging and more realistic. I got bored in Skyrim because I could just sneak roll everywhere and nothing would ever see me, seriously op.

You gotta be careful now when sneaking. It's not like Skyrim where you can run up to someone and cut their throat. You can still backstab, you just need to be careful.

Also, join the RR. You get an amazing 10mm pistol (one of the best in the game) that is silenced, after running a couple of quests.

And for sneaking, drop your companions. Even Deacon, from the RR, who is probably the best companion for a stealth build, will alert the room. The companions need work BADLY. Deacon is also not a romance option. But outside, Deacon is ok. Actually he's fine indoors too, as long as you are very careful. No running. at. all. I don't care what the perk says.

This game, as it stands now, REALLY wants you in power armor. But you can still play a theif/assassin char just gotta pay much more attention.

Also how come I don't see any bows? You'd think with resources being so low, someone would make a kick ass compound bow.

I have a 7 agility, and currently 3 points in the sneak perk.

You can get a silencer on a pipe gun at gun nut 2 btw. I have a hunting rifle without a silencer, and a pipe rifle with one that hits for a fair bit less damage. Once I get to gun nut 3 level, I will probably retire the pipe, despite having so much ammo for it compared to the .308.

For armor, I have modded just recently muffled on both my leg pieces.

There are a few things to note about sneaking.

1-if you are moving, you are less sneaky than standing still.

2-Line of site and proximity are both about equally important.

3-The brackets are important, watch the brackets.

4-Some encounters seem to be hard coded to be more perceptive.

5-Ghouls hate you.

6-Shoot the dogs first.

When you are hidden, you will see the brackets [] moving closer and further from the word hidden. when they are on top of the word, you are the most hidden. When you move or get closer, the brackets move away, if they get far enough away, you will go into caution. Time spent in caution will go back to hidden. Making noise also generally moves straight to caution. If you see the brackets getting far, waiting a few seconds in a good piece of cover until the brackets close again will help you continue to move unseen.

When you move into caution, enemys will roam a bit further than normal, especially where they heard whatever put them in caution. So if you snipe someone, move. They will often come look at the source of the gunshot, but being in a bush 10 feet away is far safer than staying in the same bush.

If you shot and did not kill someone, they tend to be more persistant. It is often worth taking another shot or two on someone you alerted before retreating to wait out the caution, but only if you are sure you can drop him before searchers get to your position. This is especially relevant with dogs involved. if they get anywhere near you, you will go to danger, and they are quick.

If you do get to danger, you are probably best served swapping the sniper rifle out for a combat rifle or shotgun and finding a defensable position. Danger will drop to caution if you can run back into far enough away cover, but the enemys will tend to home in on you a lot further than in caution.

If you are indoors, often enemys have locations that they will not path through, so you can use these as spots to retreat and wait out caution or even danger sometimes. But also indoors, enemys can hear you through walls, and run around to attack you if you arent careful.

Ghouls will come directly at you even in caution, and act a lot like dogs, but not quite as fast. They also tend to bring all thier friends in the neighborhood.

Overall, I feel stealth is a lot of fun in this game, but far from the invisibility that other bethesda games have allowed it to be. And the sneak perks are worth their weight in gold if only for ignoring mines and tripwires.

Basicaly anything that has a sound trigger will break sneak depending on how far away the sound can be heard.

I think all actual armor and most armor mods have a stealth penalty now, but need to dig some more to verify this, you need to mod you armor to get rid of it.

I can't get melee close but with 3 points in sneak and 7 agility I can shoot unsilenced in one room and have people 1 or 2 rooms over not go danger. they may go caution but dont spot me. It may depend on the type, feral ghouls dont seem to communicate with each other. When you shoot one they may be reacting to their buddy dropping dead not the awareness of you and if you dont kill them they go danger and know what direction the shot came from. I've been thinking about putting more silencers on. I have the 10mm silenced but dont use it. This isn't CoD so that little bit of range and damage loss might not be too much for the rifle and even the sniper rifle. I'll try one or the other 1st. Like with rad storms I think some walls may be transparent and wont hide you.

I noticed this too. It's neat. If you aren't paying particular attention, you may think your cover has been blown, but if you look, you will be still be in Caution, and the enemy is just shooting randomly in the direction they think the shot came from. You may get hit, but they don't SEE you. If you panic and open fire, they will change to DANGER, because they definitely will know where you are then.

Definitely. Companions will ruin the stealth game for you. They svck at sneaking. Again, you may see enemies open fire on your position, but calm down and pay attention, and you'll see you are only in CAUTION, and their fire is focused on your companion. So your companion ruined the party.

The pistol available from the RR is called "The Deliverer". With all the 10mm ammo around, you won't need much else. Mod it too. make sure you carry a shotung for the up close moment.s You can muffle the noise of a shotgun too. But not as much as this pistol. This pistol is very quiet and deadly.

Do not even use until you have 7 in agility and I'd get the ActionBoy/Girl perk (at least one point) too.

I have been sneaking since the get go - but they made it fun now. It's much tougher to sneak.

I love overhearing the NPCs. You can hide if they hear you but didn't see you - staying still, ducking in an alcove or behind something. After a few minutes, they figure they were "imagining things" or blaming their jumpiness on their jet habit. You can add stuff to items, up perks for gun nut for silencers, etc. But to me, the sneak is vastly improved - you actually have to be patient, you have to plan and you have to improve armor weapons and perks to get good. The AI is better too, because if they did get line of site on you, and you stay visible, the NPCs will come to you.

Nope, I originally planned on maxing out Sneak on my build but found out I could easily get by with only 2 levels. Started off on Very Hard and cranked it up to Survival, I think the difficulty affects enemy detection a little bit, but as long as you maneuver well enough you can avoid detection and score those sneak attacks easily. Melee is a lot harder, but then again I found close range sneaking to be annoyingly hard in Skyrim as well, I hated those thieves guild quests that took place indoors and required you to sneak past guards. Companions are almost worthless when sneaking and i've had many times where I was far away sniping and they started shooting at my dog, so I just snuck away a bit and used that as a distraction to continue picking them off.

Seems like it's still possible to get multiple critical hits if you keep your distance from your opponent and use a silenced weapon or just snipe them from a distance... getting very close and going melee would be harder in this game... they can hear you long before you'd get within striking distance... distance from them combined with whether they are facing your or not or if you're in their line of sight seem to matter quite a bit now. Pecking them with a silenced pistol and retreating out of their line of sight works with some effectiveness. Seems like the sneak bonus still applies when it's in "caution" mode and only goes away when in "danger" mode....

It does still apply in Caution mode. Also remember that Sneak criticals are under-powered in Fallout 4 compared to previous games unless you take the Ninja Perk.
