Name: Stealth Overhaul Redux
Version: 1.0
Date: 5/25/2010
Category: Game Settings
Requirements: Oblivion Patch 1.2.0.416, OBSE v17
Author(s): Sandman53, JOG

Description
===========
This mod has been edited by me. I have stripped the mod of what I like to call "fluff" and whittled it down to a basic mod that does what I want it to do to sneak, and fixed some things I thought needed fixing. Here is a list of what I have done, followed by the original Readme:

Edit:
- Fixed the Assassination script (receiving the spell) and merged it with the main script
- Removed the in-game menu in favor of a self loaded ini file (You had to manually load the original)
- Removed the Sneak toggle, Weapon Stat key, and Gear keys (See recommended mods below)
- Cleaned up the scripts/quests as much as a could, but only a bit.
* Note that all options are configurable in the ini

This mod attempts to make Sneaking around more interesting and worthwhile, wearing Heavy Armor is now a serious issue, and Sneak-Attacks with the right-weapons are much more powerful.

Features:
- The backstabbing multiplier is dependent on the weapon's speed
and range/size, a small dagger might have up to x15 while
slow Longswords and Maces might have no multiplier at all.
- Worn Heavy Armor as well as drawn Weapons and Shields
now apply a penalty to your sneak skill.
- Wearing no armor at all grants you a 10% bonus to sneak
- Many customisation-options easy to apply with an INI file!

Armor Penalty
---------------------
Equipping Weapons and Armor now lowers your sneak skill:

Shield:
Holding any shield while sneaking will lower your sneak
skill by 1/3 of the shield's weight.
Cuirass:
Heavy-Armor cuirasses apply 1/3 of their weight as sneak-penalty
Greaves:
Heavy-Armor greaves apply 1/2 of their weight as sneak-penalty
Boots:
Heavy-Armor boots apply 1/2 of their weight as sneak-penalty
Combined Armor:
The penalty for Combined Heavy Armor (e.g. Heavy Arena Rainment)
is about half its weight (Upper Body: 16,7% + Lower Body 25% + Boots 10%)

Weapon Penalty
---------------------
When you hold a weapon while sneaking a penalty to your sneak skill is
applied depending on the weapon's general type and range (size)

Bows & Staffs: -6
Two Handed: -12
One Handed: 11 * range -5 (rounded up)

When the equipped weapon is a dagger (very short blade) the penalty
is reduced by your grade of mastery in the Sneak Skill
(Novice = 0 ... Master = 4)

You can customise the base penalty (that is applied to bows)
the other penalties will be changed accordingly.
see Customisation section for details.

Backstabbing
---------------------
Melee Sneak Attacks:
Sneak-attack damage with melee weapons is now dependent on the weapons
type and speed, and stealth-skill-mastery has more effect:

Sneak Weak Standard Strong Deadly
-------------------------------------------
Novice x1 x2 x2 x3
Apprentice x2 x4 x4 x6
Journeyman x2 x4 x6 x9
Expert x3 x6 x8 x12
Master x3 x6 x10 x15

Weak Backstab: Slow 1-Hand weapon (Slow Waraxes, Fast Maces, Fast Longswords)
Standard Backstab: Normal blade (Katana) / Fast Blunt (Waraxe)
Strong Backstab: Fast blade (Shortsword)
Deadly Backstab: Dagger
No Backstab: 2 Handed weapons and very slow 1-Hand weapons (Longsword/Mace)

Marksman Sneak Attacks:
Sneak attack damage with a bow is determined by the Sneak skill
as well as the Marksman Skill:

| Marksman
Sneak | Novice Apprentice Journeym. Expert Master
-----------+--------------------------------------------
Novice | x1 x1 x2 x3 x3
Apprentice | x1 x2 x3 x4 x4
Journeyman | x2 x3 x4 x5 x5
Expert | x3 x4 x5 x6 x6
Master | x3 x4 x5 x6 x7

Assassination Power:
You gain the "Assassination" power when you reach Journeyman-level in Sneak.
It may be used once per day to double the backstab damage you inflict.
The duration of the "Assassination" effect is dependent on your mastery-level:

Journeyman: 10 seconds
Expert: 20 seconds
Master: 30 seconds

New Keys
---------------------
Backstab-Capabilities:
Press "F11" while having a weapon drawn during sneak will tell you how
suited the weapon is for backstabbing (including current multiplier).

Sneak-Penalty-Info-Key:
Press "F12" activate a Debug-Info Message that tells you the current
sneak-penalties (Cuirass / Greaves / Boots / Shield / Weapon / Total)

What is wrong with Assasssination? I've used it without noticing any propblems. Otherwise sounds good, especially the ini file.

Edit: "Assasssination" is a damn hard word to write correctly :lmao:

Very nice. Though SO did have an ini file, but it was in the Oblivion directory. I'll be downloading this too though, seeing as I don't use the stuff you removed either.

I don't know but I never used this kind of Stealth tweak; looking at this as "made of wins" as I read in some comments is a relative point of view; Take for example Sneak Bow damage give you 4x damage (5x further) if you are Journeyman at sneak and Marksman; I think this is a bit overpowered; same remark for Daggers with 15x in some settings.
The good point is Heavy armor penality.
Edit:
"SM Combat Hide - Excellent hit and run mod"
can make your game a joke because I tested it; you can turn pretty every fight on your side with this mod.

can you explain what you changed here? (I haven't used the original SO)
How did you change the Assassination spell?
And as someone said there was already an INI file - did you remove an in-game customization menu?

Typo, changed the script. In my opinion the way you received the assassination was really wonky and involved 2 quests and 2 scripts. Extremely not necessary.

There was an ini file included in the original SO, I explained some of the settings better in the ini file, and also added in code to make the ini file load instead of having to do it manually (as in the original SO). Because of that I removed the in-game menu completely because it just feels redundant and I love ini files :)

Those 2 changes are nothing special, but needed fixes in my opinion. The biggest changes was the stuff I removed drastically decreasing the overall size of the mod. I always thought that, now anyways, there are better mods for what SO was trying to do at the time. No other mod yet though has done what SO has done for stealth gameplay.

@Ayleid_people.... Dont use SM Combat hide. I dont care. Its a mod I use and I like it. No one said you had to use it. As for the sneak attack and bow multipliers, both options are configurable in the ini. :)

you can use attack and hide 2.1 hard version if you think SM combat and hide is unbalanced, plus attack and hide is compatible with reener's guard overhaul. btw, what does it mean "removed the sneak toggle" ?

There was a key added that changed the functionality of the sneak key between a hold-down-to-keep-active and press-to-turn-on/off type key, I think, so this removes that.

Thanks for the info. Looks like you have made some crucial improvement without losing the original mod at all. Good work

bumping since linked in another thread.
I wish the cobl version had the fixes in it. So far no reply to that request on Nexus.
I like having an in-game option to change settings.

Sorry. I guess I should start looking to see if comments have been posted to my mods on Nexus.

Sandman rewrote Stealth Overhaul pretty much from the ground up.
In my Cobl version, all I did was to change the configuration menu to be accessed from the +Options of Cobl, add the readme as a book under +Guides, and disable the hotkeys on startup. There's no need to Cobl-ize his mod. If you like in game menus, use mine. If you like ini setups, use his.

Oh no. I did not rewrite it from the ground up, and so I don't want to give that impression. That is what I hope to do one of these days.

I gutted the system to its basics while fixing some bugs from the original and adding in a self loading ini.

Stealth Overhaul is not JOG's greatest work. I still think Havish is the best quest mod of any game I've played and Booty Island and Thivery in the Imperial City are damned fine quest mods too. :violin:

Not to detract from this but JOG just released an update to the original cleaning some stuff up and including a Nehrim compatible version.

what is Havish? Link?

JOG is back? Maybe we finally will get the sequel to Thievery in the Imperial City?

You have played Morrowind and you don't know what Havish is? http://mods.jo-ge.net/mw/havish/ with some of the most brilliant quests (mostly for thieves) I've ever played and the city itself had a strong Daggerfall feel to it.

JOG is all about Nehrim right now. He can be found http://www.sureai.de/forum/viewforum.php?f=86 sporadically releasing mods for it.

OK I have implemented a code that changes how the sneak penalty is applied. I never liked the fact that it edited the skill directly as it can cause compatibility issues with other mods, like nGCD for example. So when the player has a sneak penalty a drain effect is applied, and when he has a bonus a fortification effect is applied.

Now my only thing I am wondering is if the effect should be applied while the player is sneaking, or should be active at all times. In my mind it doesn't if you are sneaking or not, the penalty should always be there.

What do you think?

I think if it is Nehrim compatible I will download it immediately.

Turning off the drain/fortify while NOT sneaking would let me see what my real skill level is. :D
