Stealthplay in Fallout 4... *sigh*

Game is stupid. The AI can hear any sound you make right in front of them, but if you are in [Caution] they will search practically in the opposite direction and go further away from where you are currently. Same game, different name.

No, it doesn't make perfect sense as far as realism goes but simulating eyes, ears and decision making is not an easy, perfect science especially when that programming is left to dynamically behave on it's own. Can you imagine developing that and having to settle for a position somewhere in the middle because too little or too much is unacceptable? I don't think the AI is perfect, i just think it's acceptable understanding how hard it is to program good AI even for tightly scripted situations. It's getting better with each new release and reasonably that's all i can ask for.

It's also possible to make AI that works TOO good, if they don't dumb it down some. I'm sure if they made the AI's search capabilities as good as possible, your char in the game would never have a chance, and you'd just get caught and die all the time. Not much fun either.

One would have to design a randomly intelligent behaviour, and even then the AI would never be 100% unpredictable (unless, of course, the player is a dunce). AIs in almost every game (save for maybe chess and similar) can be outsmarted. The reason is because AI is incapable of acting unpredictably within a system where all possible actions of the AI is known to the player. True AI doesn't actually exist yet, it's all hardcoded directly or emergent from hardcoding. There's no learning or motivation involved.

I was kinda checking this stuff out last night, and I went into an interior area that contained 10 (I think) Supermutants and 4 of their dogs, along with some irradiated radroaches. My char was level 22 with the 3rd rank of the sneak perk, first rank Ninja perk, second rank rifleman and gunslinger perks. Weapon was a night-scoped and suppressed .308 cal rifle. Secondary weapon 10mm suppressed large capacity pistol. Here's how it went.

First three supermutants one-shotted in the head, briefly got "caution" warning after the second one and changed position. Took out two more, got a "caution" warning, changed position again and ran headlong into three glowing green radroaches. During that encounter got "Danger" warning, was attacked by two mutie hounds just as I finished off the last radroach. I heard supermutants approaching durijng the battle, so as soon as the last mutt was dead, I changed position, by moving deeper into shadows, with no direct walls intervening.

Two supermutants came (just as the warning changed back to "Caution"), saw the dead radroaches and mutie mutts and checked out the area. One was close enough that, had I the inclination and capability, I could have pinched is big green posterior. One said something about wanting a fight as they left. I followed behind them slowly, and after a bit took out the one in the rear with a head shot.

For the rest it went pretty much the same, except for one lone supermutant in a lower level who brought up the "Danger" warning and followed me up a flight of stairs, so I just dropped a mine and kept going for a ways just around the next corner. When I heard the mine go off, I stepped back around the corner and finished off the supermutant with the 10mm.

In the end, only the last supermutant ever fired a shot, but once had me spotted, he never lost track of me again (though to be sure, I thought he might have a grenade or something, so I wasn't being very sneaky as I ran :) ). After all was said and done, the results were that I never took any damage except a rad roach bite and a nip from one of those mutts, everything in the place besides me was dead, I had a lot of fun, so...

Where is the problem?
