Stealthy Character Question

Post » Fri Dec 09, 2011 10:00 am

Hello, so I was wondering. I made a Assassiny, Hunterish, Stealthy character, I am using a bow and thinking about dual wielding. I was wondering, what are the pros and cons between using a sword or a dagger?

I know swords do more damage (obviously) and are slower swinging that daggers, But are there any other benafits to using a dagger over a sword when playing as this type of character?

I know for realism's sake assassinating with a dagger is probably much easier, but what about in this game? Does it have any other advantage besides faster attacks?

Thanks

There is always the weight to deal with. The basic one-handed sword weighs at least 9 or 10 lbs. With daggers, you can carry 3 or 4 and have the same weight as one sword. So you could carry a variety of daggers with different enchantments. I have not done the math on damage so it might even out. My character dual wields with swords. There is a dragon shout that lets you use weapons faster, but the weapons can not be enchanted.

There's a perk that gives daggers x15 damage with a successful sneak attack. You can combine this with the "Backstab does double damage" enchantment on items to give you a x30 damage bonus, in comparison to 12x with the same set-up from a sword.

What Muzzy said. A successful backstab with a dagger is the highest damage single attack in the game, generally speaking (though it might be possible that given the right opponent and perks, a mace could actually out-damage a dagger).

That said, MOST opponents will drop from a single dagger powerstrike from stealth. Those that don't, or those that you fail to get into melee range with before losing stealth, will be better faced with some other weapon.

PRO: The 15x hits are devastating to your opponents; stealing stuf is easier; can bypass creatures like falions that are quite hard to deal with.
CON: Not the best thing for huge fights(more than one); no defence while duel wielding; Hard to fight against shield/powerfull opponents.
