Steam and Mods

Post » Mon Mar 14, 2011 3:03 pm

I've done a search for information on this already, but still have questions. Is the steam GOTY version that difficult to get mods to work with, besides what I read about back dating some files? If there are any special steps that I have to take, is there a guide somewhere for this? I'm not going to be running MGE or any script extenders or anything like that. Don't have the most powerful computer in the world here. I appreciate any answers clearing all this up for me, as the information I seem to be finding is a bit vague. Thanks.

I'm using the Steam version now. (switched from the CD version when it was on deep discount this summer) I have back dated the BSA's for MGE but that's all I have done and I have had no problems with mods at all. I would say that there is nothing to be afraid of. FWIW, I use Win7/64

In order to use any mods that replace stock assets (i.e. meshes, textures, icons), the Steam versions of the bsa files must be redated to year 2002. This is due to the fact that the Morrowind game files are dated for the day and time you performed the Steam install, which likely will be dated newer than any previously existing mods. Morrowind is configured by default to give priority to any assets that have the most recent datestamp - the assets contained in the bsa archives inherit the datestamp of that bsa. Redating the bsa archives then allows loose files from mods (as well as bsa archives included with mods) to override the stock assets based on their release dates.
