Steam and Skyrim

Post » Tue Sep 20, 2011 9:04 pm

Is Skyrim going to require Steam to play? Steam is the biggest piece of crap, secondary software ever made. I could maybe see its uses for people who live in the city, and like to throw away CD's or what ever.

I'm in aw of Skyrim and want to play it, but I will save my money and use it for something else if it requires me to use steam.

Anyway I hope Bethesda doesn't do something stupid, like making steam a required part of playing their game.

I doubt that it will require Steam in order for you to play it. Just buy a retail copy of the game, and you should be alright.

Unfortunately yes. Skyrim uses steamworks, so even retail copies need Steam to run :(

You'll need steam to activate the game even if you bought the retail version as far as I know as a bare minimum. Not sure if you need steam to play as well.

It wouldn't make sense for Skyrim to require Steam to be able to boot up because it doesn't contain multiplayer.

Piracy protection strikes again.. Gotta' love it.

Anyway, thanks for correcting my misleading information.

Cheers. :turned:

Sounds like someone is confusing Steam of today with Steam of 2004.

Thats too bad, I think steam really bogs down your computer, and downloads are allot slower then if you did an in game update like Dragon age. I would think that because Oblivion did great without secondary software like steam, that they would use the same procedure. It sux for me because I live in the woods. And I am still doing an update for portal 2 for the last few months, because right after it came out, there was a 6000 meg upgrade... I don't know wtf that was about, but I figure that would happen with Skyrim..

You forgot to include the part that is respectful, but yeah, skyrim requires stream, which isn't really a problem. let go of whatever myths you harbor about it and enjoy one of the best things to happen to gaming.

Skyrim using steam has nothing to do with multiplayer.
Adding DRM to a game simply limits used sales because the game is tied to your steam account and can't be removed.

It's for piracy protection.

I'm not sure about that. As a copy protection steam isn't very effective ^^

Steam only bogs down your computer if it's an old piece of crap. Its memory footprint is infinitesimal by modern standards and I've found that its downloads are faster than anything else I've ever downloaded from the Internet.

As it's been stated before, once you activate Skyrim you shouldn't need to have Steam installed if (for some insane reason) you don't want to use it. Not sure if they'd release patches separately or not. Personally I've never found Steam anything but convenient, useful, there when I need it and out of the way when I don't.

Activate the game and then do http://i56.tinypic.com/33ndmi1.jpg
No downloading for updates after that.

Looks like you have one 15 GB HDD.

This explains everything.

The computer is new, the internet is old, because we don't have choices were I live. So when ever I get a game that requires steam, then i'm like crap now I got to spend a couple days downloading before I can even play the game, OR MORE. I'm trying to move, but I just got off unemployment so I got to get a few paychecks saved up before I do. Anyways The best thing about steam that I've seen, is that if you have a computer die on you, you install steam, and bam you have all your games back, after re-downloading them. other wise piece of crap for me because of the internet situation.
