Steam Cache Verification fails: what to do?

Post » Wed Sep 01, 2010 10:58 am

My Steam Cache verification utitlity always fails. It re-downloads a 808 bytes long file continually (I don't know which one).
So how can I fix this problem? I've read some ini files must be deleted. But which one? Those in the user directory or those in the game folder? Which one exactly?

I'm on Windows 7 64 bit.

Inside your main Steam folder is a GameValidation.log file which details which file is failing.

Thank you for the answer.
I have this:
Starting validation of Fallout New Vegas
Validation failure: c:\program files (x86)\giochi\steam\steamapps\common\fallout new vegas\InstallScript.vdf
Validation complete: 431 Total Files, 1 Failed Validation

So, what should I delete?

I had the same problem. I finally gave up trying to fix the file and just went back to playing the game; everything seems to be running fine.

Looking at InstallScript.vdf in notepad shows a bunch of registry information. You can try deleting it and see what happens.

If you're paranoid, rename the file to installScript.xxx instead and see what happens. If it breaks something, "restore" it back to vdf.

Found this on the HardOCP forum:

This file appears to have been created by Valve to aid in the installation process of the game. Normally, when launched from a retail DVD, the installer copies all files to the installation location on your HDD, then creates a score of entries in your system registry. Because Valve doesn't like installers to run after you purchase and download a game from Steam, they created this script that replicates what the setup.exe installer does, namely create all the registry entries for the game to run properly.

Ok guys, thanks for the answers.
I have tried to remove the file installscript.vdf completely from the Steam folder.
After revalidating the cache, Steam re-download it from scratch.

So it seems impossible to solve this problem. :flamethrower:
Ok, I imagine I can ignore the problem for the fact that file is not game related, after all. But how annoying it is.... :banghead:

Yea, It's Steam's issue. No big deal as it shouldnt affect anything.

It's *not* totally unrelated to game crashes on my machine.

I've got constant crash when I enter Atomic Wrangler. If I try to save game before playing to any of the games and then open pip boy (generally after having changed cash for chips) the game crashes. Bringing back (even manually) the file to the original content after the crash allows me to continue playing. If i dont restore original file (or clear cache from steam, which makes the same operation) i keep getting crashs if i try to open pip boy or by pressing Esc.
Even pressing Esc after changing back chips but before exiting Atomic Wrangler causes a crash. If i manage to exit the place the game is autosaved, so even if it crashesh with same behaviour (pip boy or esc) i can restore back original file and continue playing.

The two files are roguhly the same except for:
- "Registry" which became "registry" (lowercased)
- A new key ("kvsignatures") which contains "InstallScript" and some sort of signature (beginning with 8cc46324... ending with 1789465 - dont know if it's user related or the same for us all)
- Different tab spaces (probably not relevant)

This same file always fails for me also - seems unrelated to any crash issues - but Steam really should fix this minor issue that repeatedly confuses people

I have opened a support ticket with Steam explaining the problem. Hopefully they will answer (even if I doubt it) and they will fix this annoiance once and for all.
Let's hope.

By the way, i've tryed a workaround...

Setting the file as read-only is not sufficient, but removing write permissions for anyone (including Administrator group, excluding only my account) actually prevents the file to be overwritten, with apparently no complaints from Steam nor the game itself.
It's an "advanced" task so better not to try it if not sure on what to do.

Crashes i've described above have, however, ceased apparently. I'll undergo some more tests right now...

Edit: Confirmed... played a full hour (wan't happening since last patch) with no crashes or major issues

Edit2: Nevermind... a brand new crash while in Gomorrah (same issue - Esc to save in between games and crash happened)

Steam support has answered to my support ticket (with a useless answer, I would say).
They claim my files are corrupted and they advice to re-install the game.

Obviously it's not the case. Sure, I can try to reinstall everything from scratch trying not to use the DVD but the download only... But frankly I'm too lazy for this... (and a 7GB download is quite heavy).

So who is to blame here?

I bought Fallout New Vegas and on the CD it was not mention that I need this steam thing.

I installed it and things ran well somewhat fine - with the high amount of crashed with F NW.

Now this new update is out and Fallout crashes when ever it would start the game.
No matter if I load a saved game or start a new one.

Pretty much this is useless for me and for having payed 50 dollars and having a non working
product is well I would say pretty close to a scam in my opinion.

Customers should be allowed to give back the product and get their money back when you
pay for something which does not work.

I do not care if this is Steam or gamesas the product simply does not work.

go search steam forums for this issue - good luck.

if gamesas decides to publish FLNV via steam even when you buy the CD
then they also have to make sure it all works with steam - in particular when
they release a patch to fix bugs, which turns into a patch to not make the game
run.

pathetic
