Steam client. Not allowing me to click PLAY button or others

The pic above is what it looks like.
Description... Menu pops up. Music starts playing (this didn't happen till i reinstalled it a few times...).

This is very aggravating. I've only been able to find one other case were this has happened browsing forums and search engines. That wasn't too helpful cause a solution wasn't specifically stated (Something to do with windows registry files). We just got this game for my little brother and it's the only thing he got for hist birthday and it freaken stopped working after 8 hours like a demo.....

Using Windows XP. Game of the year edition. Stem client download. Bought on steam, didn't send a CD key or anything when we got it, No sort of normal authentication. When re-download and install it, it still has the same problem. I looked around and it seems like some sort of registry error or w/e, that's what I got off the internet.
If we did download the wrong version or something (being that there may or may not be a demo), than please comment that. In the image it shows that it's not specifically a demo. I'm just trying to fix this issue, i wasn't the one to order it or perform the original download and installation.

Please help. It would be much appreciated.

Have steam verify the game files. See if that doesn't help. If it still doesn't want to work, try renaming the Oblivion.ini located in My Games\Oblivion. Try the game again.

Nothing. It doesn't even recreat the oblivion.ini file

And by "verify the game files" you mean "verify integrity of game cache"? Otherwise i know no other way of checking anything. When i do that it shows no problems.

Try some of the suggestions in http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1322429. One guy just had to restart his system, and it started working...

Ok, what they want you to do is copy this stuff:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Bethesda Softworks]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Bethesda Softworks\Oblivion]
"Installed Path"="C:\\Games\\Oblivion\\"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Bethesda Softworks\Oblivion\1.00.0000]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Bethesda Softworks\Oblivion - Construction Set]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Bethesda Softworks\Oblivion - Construction Set\1.00.0000]

in to notepad. (simple text editor, comes with windows.) You have to update the "installed path" to where YOUR version of the game is installed. Probably something along the lines of:

"c:\\program files\\steam\\steamapps\\common\\oblivion\\"

Verify that the path is correct in notepad. (it HAS to be exact, or, it won't work.) Save the file as Oblivion.reg Put it someplace you can find it...... desktop would work.... once saved, double click on it, and it should ask you to confirm changes to the registry, or some such, tell it Yes, or Ok, or, whatever the affirmative response is. Might have to reboot when its done. (it will take less than a second) Try the game again.

You are running steam, so, just changing the drive letter isn't going to help, you need the full path to where the oblivion.exe is at. Steamapps will be in your installed path.

So this is what i got going so far.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Bethesda Softworks]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Bethesda Softworks\Oblivion]
"Installed Path"="I:\\program files\\steam\\steamapps\\common\\oblivion\\"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Bethesda Softworks\Oblivion\1.00.0000]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Bethesda Softworks\Oblivion - Construction Set]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Bethesda Softworks\Oblivion - Construction Set\1.00.0000]
