Steam doesn't want to install

Post » Wed Apr 07, 2010 7:24 am

I just spend 50 euro's on New Vegas, been waiting for this game for such a long time. Now that I have it I want to install it unfortunately with Steam which I hate to use.... Anyways now that I have the game I'm trying to install it and steam says; "Cannot install Fallout New Vegas yet because it hasn't been released yet". Which kind of makes me wonder how it is possible that I'm holding the game in my hands as we speak and steam claims it "not to be released yet"....

Idk why the release dates are diff, im guessing its because they have to add multi-languages to the european version.

Yep. Same here. Worst part? If you had bought it on a console, you'd be playing it right now.

That's what pisses me off the most. PC users get all kinds of anti piracy crap to deal with, console users have been playing it since yesterday and we poor PC folks can't play because "Computer/Valve says no"

That is simply "pre-loading" the game. It allows you to do so so when it does go live on the 22nd, you are ready to go. Would you rather install the whole thing then?

Yes, where it's been release already. Sorry you live in Europe and are effected, but if it aint released, it aint released.

You have 1 more day, and the moment it's active, you can jump right in. Just be a patient, it will come.

I definitely want to put in a couple thoughts into this. You know, it's great when you're in the armed services serving overseas, you buy something like this game at the local base exchange (which, by the way, ships most of its merchandise from the -USA-), and we're about as screwed as the rest of the Europeans. Thanks, Steam/Valve. And what is more [censored]? I bought the retail version and I cannot even install the game files from the damn disc because the game is not unlocked yet. But yet, I can pre-load, which requires downloading. What a load of asinine crap. My base exchange should have just sold envelopes with a CD-Key inside instead. *Sigh* Retail seems to be the useless way to go these days.

I'm sorry, this is not meant as an attack, but am I the *only* one that finds it strange that when I buy a game in a store, I am unable to install and play it? If I buy a dvd two days before it's release I will have no problem playing it. If I buy a console game two days prior to release I can play it, but when I do the same on a PC I suddenly can't? Heck, I've had games before their release date for years and always have been able to install and play them the second I got home. I'm holding a friggin disk here, I paid for it, let me play it. Who cares about release dates. If they'd mattered give some more action into making sure it isn't sold before the date.

They should have made it clear to you (etiher by display or warning on the box) that the game doesn't release until 10/22. If they failed to do so, I agree with you.

Its steam DRM, its how it works. It doesnt stop piracy yes but it prevents them from leaking out a cracked retail copy before release date. The retail disc is basicaly a pre-load, And in order to work it still needs to download key files from steam. This stops pirates from cracking the retail copy before release because they cant without the key files steam holds back. So pirates can get the retail copy early but its useless untill steam unlocks it. Thats why steam games always get cracked after release. It does hurt legit buyers but what can we do.

As for diff release date in europe, now thats an entirely diff story. Idk why theyd do that.

Hence the squillions of threads there was regarding this very subject in the last month or so....

Nothing strange about it if it has a date requirement. Maybe they should have just left the shelves empty until the 22. Then again, there are some out there that were happy to pre-load the game. You seem to not be one of them.

Maybe they didn't have a date requirement, this one does. Like it or not.

Works for you, but what about those who do want the pre-load option? Should they suffer because your not happy with the system that's in place?

Following is the "time of release".
Hey guys wanted to share some info on when the game will be available to unlock on Steam, Direct2Drive, and Gamestop digital download.

On the 19th:

12:01 AM Pacific Time (PST) for North America, Central America, and South America.

On the 22nd

12:01 AM Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) for territories other than North America, Central America, and South America

There is nothing wrong with having a set release date and time. It would be like buying theater tickets early and expecting the show to start early because you have the tickets in your hand.
At least this way everyone knows what time to expect it and that would be 12:01 GMT.

Are you saying that all PC owners of the game have to wait till Oct. 22 no matter where or how they bought the game?
I bought it on the GameStop website.I selected a digital download.I run the little download manager that starts the whole process
and it downloads the installer.I run the installer and it goes thru the process of selecting where I want to put it.After that I select"OK' and its ready
to start installing then all of a sudden I get an error message"ERROR DECOMPRESSING DATA!CORRUPTED INSTALLER?"
I since sent an e-mail to Gamestop customer service and am waiting for a reply. This svcks. :(

Release date for the game in north america was in the 19th. For europe its 22nd.

So if your from north america you should be able to playnow. But anyways i think your installer download is corrupted, might need to download it again.
Or maybe the installer from gamestop is corrupted, they might neede to look into that.

I have bought the game, validated it but couldn't install it. By validating the game I received the option to preload so I did just that. I understand how steam works and it is no problem for me, most games aren't available before their release dates so no one notices. The thing that bugs me is the fact that Console users (i.e. my friends) are now happily playing the game.

It might be just jealousy, I'm not denying I envy my friends for being able to play it. But I feel punished for buying my games legally. If I wanted I could have played the cracked US version for a week. Instead I choose not to, I choose to support the devs by giving my money for their product, but then are unable to use said product.

bottom line: I feel screwed for playing on PC.

If Xbox Live and PSN had both also locked users out of their games until launch, I would still be slightly disappointed, but I would have a lot more understanding for it.

They surely failed me. My box says "Do not sell before 10/19/10" in black capital letters on an orange colored sticker seal on top of the game case. I also bought it at a base exchange, so they surely shipped these copies from North America like they do with most of their merchandise.

As I said it in my post above. If it was the case that console users were also unable to play I wouldn't moan so much about it.

To use your example: There are two halls in the cinema, both featuring the same movie. Me and my friend both got our tickets early but the show in his hall does start early because he has the tickets in his hand. Is it so strange that I excpect the show to start early for me as well? We both got the tickets, it's the same movie, only difference is that we're not in the same hall.

You to could have bought a console version, but decided to go the PC route.....which had limitations. (I'd like to say good on you for supporting the company and not stealing it. Even if it kinda "blew up in your face", from your point of view.)

Chalk it up as a learning experience. Read the box, and if you don't like the limitations/requirements, don't buy it for PC. (But don't steal it either!) Though, in my opinion the PC is always the best way to go. Note the PC community can, and has fixed issues for ourselves. Good luck doing that on a console.

Just be patient. I bet once you can play, you'll forget this, what I see as a minor annoyance (In this world of murder, forced six, genocide.) .and you will enjoy the game. I do understand the frustration, but nothing was kept secret and simply sprung on you out of the blue to annoy you.
