STEAM... Have I got this right so far?

Post » Fri May 04, 2012 8:58 am

Just bought the Ultimate Edition of Fallout...New Vegas. Disc, not download.

Tried to install it, and get the message I must be online to play.

So, I searched the forum for info.

This is what I think I've read.....

STEAM is a nightmare.

I cannot play this game without using STEAM. No workaround could be found. Get the "must be connected" message.

And the thought of a 4 hour update/download is pathetic.....(as per a forum post)

STEAM provides no support.

Your game will crash and give you tons of issues ... with or without STEAM, but especially with STEAM.

People HATE this STEAM thing...

Right so far???

Can't this game be played, straight from the disk.... Must I have a "live" connection to play...must STEAM be involved.. no other way to play?

I'm no computer genius and all the issues folks are having with this are a real turnoff... I wouldn't know how do fix 1/2 of the things I've read about. Even with all the helpful posts.

The other Fallout's were fun to play... but this one sounds like it might be more trouble than fun....and this STEAM thing... yikes....

Thoughts anyone

Steam is perfectly fine, so I'm not sure what negative comments you are reading. Also, Valve has excellent customer support.

As for being online, yes, for activation and/or updates. You can also set Steam to offline mode and/or the game not to update automatically once the initial install and activation is done. This is pretty much the same as any software, including antivirus or OSes.

Basically, look at it this way: you can have Steam offer a slight protection for a company's property or you could have DRM invasion such as SecuRom installed along with the game so that your system is messed up and you cannot remove the DRM.

An internet connection is required to register the key with steam and install the game. The game should install from the disc then steam will download updates.
If you bought the disc, you should see an advertisemant that an internet connection is required. Check the back of the box or case.

Steam has works fine for me and always has. I don't know where you read those comments. Sounds like it's from people having a bad time with it. Software issues are not unique to steam.
It's easy to read about the negativity since why would people bother to post when it works. It's also easy to conclude that people in general h8 steam since there seem to be soooo many posts about it.
That's just from your perspective. There are millions of people who use steam. Steam is a DRM system and it has been around for awhile now. A lot of PC games are using it. Companies have the right
to protect their property from piracy. Although in agreement with Tenshi, the protection offered is marginal since even steam games are pirated.

Can't this game be played, straight from the disk.... Must I have a "live" connection to play...must STEAM be involved.. no other way to play?

You won't need the disk once you install it. You don't need the internet since you can play in offline mode. You do need the internet to install/update it. Steam is integrated with the game so there is no way around it cracks or hacks aside.

I'm no computer genius and all the issues folks are having with this are a real turnoff... I wouldn't know how do fix 1/2 of the things I've read about. Even with all the helpful posts.
It doesn't take a computer genius. Just someone with reasonable computer use knowledge and can follow steps. What issues are you having with it so far? So far the fact that you need an internet connection seems
to be a problem but it is advertised that an internet connection is required.

Thanks for all the info. I wasn't able to read the box before I got it... Mail, from Amazon..

My computer skills are lacking in the "terms" used for fixing things.. Like.... find the dll file in your "wherever" and do this or that with it. The lucky ones, who were raised with computers know all this stuff and what the terms mean. When some obsure file or procedure is suggested, they know what's being referred to. My Computer for Dummies doesn't always explain things as clear as I'd like. And the wonderful folks on these forums, seem to know what all this stuff means. I can figure out some of it... but other stuff is very confusing.

Searching the web sometimes works, but again, the "fixes" usually make reference to procedures and terms I can't find further info on..

But, I'll give it a go... If I mess up, I can always..... system restore... might learn something new... Like where to dispose of the very expensive gaming computer I just blue screened to death... lol

Thanks again....

Went to amazon and looked at new vegas for PC. Nothing at all about steam or that an internet connection is required .
Even though people in the comment section mention it, it should be clearly advertised at the top.

Hope you get it running. If you are having issues you can post here. This is a community forum so it's gamers helping gamers although the dev's claim to read it.
heres a link for some more official tech support venues: http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1120441-please-read-before-posting/
