Steam CD Key works with Non-Steam?

Topic says it all..

Just curious if anyone has tried using their Steam CD Key to install the non-steam version, and if they had any success.

There's no way that would work as the format of the keys is different. The boxes only fit a set amount of numbers.

I've used cdkeys from games bought on steam to install and play retail copies many times including Crysis and Crysis Wars. If steam gives you a 20 character key it may work on other versions.

I stand corrected. Now if only 3rd party keys worked in Steam!
