To Steam or not to Steam

Post » Wed Aug 18, 2010 12:59 pm

Well of course the game will be available on Steam to buy.

But just don't *force* Steam to be required. That simple.

Thats what I would prefer also.

If they make it Steam only for PC then i will be quite happy enough with just getting my Xbox 360 CE.

I bought a few Steam games in the past and won`t get any more in the future. I prefer my PC Steam free.

It's kinda Bethesda's fault if they make GB sized patches :o Most games on Steam do not require such patches to work, especially NOT at release time.

I could be wrong but I considered that a weakness of Steam's patching system, it seems to need to replace the whole file being patched instead of fixing/updating the necessary bits like in pre New Vegas beth games

This is not a choice, amusing as the constant topics about it might be.

If you want to play Skyrim on the PC, you will be using Steam - Period.

I would love to say "Get Over It", but that would be foolish - I know alot of peeps have genuine concerns about Steam, but that IS the future for Skyrim.

Sure it is a choice, Bethesda/Zenimax have a choice to force Steam down our throats or not & the user/gamer have a choice to accept it. Not everyone can.

That's how it works, Bethesda just needs to keep that in mind when they create the game. They got nearly a full year for that.

Well the BSA method has previously worked fine, but I doubt they'd be willing to change it JUST for Steam.

I'm totally fine with Steam, but I can certainly see why some people don't want to be forced to use it. Personally, I think I'll buy the retail version of the game (possibly the CE), and only use Steam if it's required.

Probably a combination of the huge bsa archive files Bethesda use and that steam updater is unable to modify a file so they has to replace. Might be something as simple as to change packing method of the bsa archives.

Not sure if this is the right place to ask this...

I'm looking for some information about Steam. My son bought Fallout Vegas when it came out and we've had problems since then. He's telling me that it must be registered at Steam, and someone keeps hacking his account. Is there a way to play the game without Steam? Is there a way to keep from having his account hacked on a monthly basis? Is there a phone number for Steam? (Because I'd like to give them a piece of my mind - god knows they could use it.)

So, is it possible to play the game WITHOUT Steam?

I sure hope it's not on Steam. I loathe Steam and everything else that tries to regulate PC gaming.

Try https://support.steampowered.com/ for the hacking issue and explain them the situation with a ticket.

Ask your son if he visited scam sites that advertise free games, because many ppl lose their accounts due to such things ;)

Dunno if it's possible to play it without steam. tho

I won't be purchasing ANY Bethesda games anymore if Skyrim uses Steam, and that's a promise. Skyrim will be the final one if it has Steam. I don't care how good any future games are, that'll be the last straw.

I don't think Steam should be required, but I would like Steam support so my friends know what I'm playing instead of the generic "In-game" status.

I love all of the irrational paranoia of steam in the thread. Or the people who say "Steam gave me viruses" or "My steam account is getting hacked"

No, it didn't, and no it isn't unless you were stupid and gave someone the means to hack your account. Quite honestly if you have problems with steam, its user error. The platform is effective at preventing pirating and promoting a enjoyable experience for the user at the same time.

I understand not wanting steam to be the sole place to purchase the game, I just don't agree with it :)

Actually our only "choice" is not to buy the game, or buy it for a console. :) That's not really a choice as far as I'm concerned.

I wish those "who can't use steam" luck with the future, as most gaming companies are going to DRM - it makes alot of sense for the companies to do so, even if some folks don't like it.

Personally, I think this is mostly about Resistance to Change.

Nighthawk, my reasons for not liking Steam:

Inability to install games where I want them
Another username + password to remember
Additional CPU + Hard Disk footprint (Steam itself is 150mb on your drive)
Forced updates (Don't say you can turn them off, you can't turn them off during install)
Steam's EULA

I never specifically mentioned you.

And all of those are terrible reasons for hating steam IMO.

The addition CPU and hard drive space is trivial at best, the EULA is needed because of people who would sue otherwise.

The only decent concerns are forced updates and another username. And both of those are rather lame reasons for saying you won't buy Skyrim. Bethesda wants money off this game, and thus they want to prevent piracy. Steam is a excellent way of doing that, if you don't like it too bad, but at least support a developer you care about, especially since they could be like Ubisoft and use idiotical DRM instead.

You have never read the Steam EULA, have you? Here's my favourite quotes from it:

VALVE DOES NOT GUARANTEE CONTINUOUS, ERROR-FREE, VIRUS-FREE OR SECURE OPERATION AND ACCESS TO STEAM, THE SOFTWARE, YOUR ACCOUNT AND/OR YOUR SUBSCRIPTIONS(S).

Quite reasonable to expect... if Steam wasn't the only way to play said games. No secure operation guaranteed, but they want my credit card information? what.

Either you or Valve has the right to terminate or cancel your Account or a particular Subscription at any time. You understand and agree that the cancellation of your Account or a particular Subscription is your sole right and remedy with respect to any dispute with Valve.

Don't like something Valve did to your account? Well you can just go home, because that's your only remedy.

The entirety of Section 13.C

But here's the final quote:
You acknowledge that Valve is not required to provide you notice before terminating your Subscriptions(s) and/or Account, but it may choose to do so.

I'm sorry but that makes Blizzard's WoW EULA and TOS look warm and fuzzy.

My only question about it would be, what about the people that wish to play the game that have no internet connection, or they live in a town where the internet connections are very very bad? Many areas still only have dial-up available as an internet provider option, where I live in Ohio it was only last year that DSL was finally available. Do they want to alienate a portion of their potential audience? That is my only concern about it.

I have sold every game I have ever owned..except my collection of 40 nes games.. I don't own all these any more: 50 atari games, 25+snes games, 20 genesis games, 20+ N64 games, 30 PS1 games, 20 PS2 games, and must be hitting 50 PC games in the last 25 years or so.

So there is that. And yeah Miax is right, I am resisting that change because it [censored]s with my disposable income on games. And yeah that is directly [censored] with how I spend leisure time.
Steam is trying to [censored] with my friday nights. HELL NAW.

edit: And before anyone says something about second hand sales are lost sales to developers, or I am not supporting developers or something ignorant, for a start second hand markets do not work like that apparently, and I have bought a fair amount of games, and tbh I could care less, I just sold GTA vice city, to make funds for BGS and Skyrim, Rockstar can cry me a river for all I care.

I'm pretty confidant that it will be available to PC on Steam as well as Retail. Steam required? God no, have some faith in Bethesda.

I'll be buying the retail for a few different reasons:

1. It adds another game box to my collection
2. I won't have to run steam at the same time Skyrim so it won't use any of my RAM/CPU.
3. I will be able to install Skyrim to a location of my choosing if I purchase the retail edition.
4. Most importantly, from personal experience, Oblivion required A LOT of uninstalling and reinstalling. From official patches going awry, or mods just screwing everything up. I'd go insane having to download such a huge game over and over and over.

Loss see the thing is, you can have a boxed game still require Steam. See: most/all Valve games released since Steam came out.

FONV would be the precedent in this case.
