To Steam or not to Steam

I've stated my reasons for hating Valve. If you don't like them, well that's just too bad.

Steam is not a crappy program, I understand you may not want its services but that doesn't make it crappy. Hate Bethesda, you have no reason to hate Valve.

my personal experience with Steam is that it's pretty unstable, & that was a recent version so IMO it could be be coded & be implemented better.

And all your reasons have been shown to be wrong or unwarranted. I completely understand that ou may just not want to install another program to play a game, which is a completely fine reason, but the reasons you posted make no sense as they are all easily fixed within about 10 seconds of installing steam or a game.

You still haven't addressed why the only solutions to Steam are always horrible hackjob workarounds. Why not "Would you like to update this game now?" on install, and not "updating game please wait"? Why not "Would you like to change the install path?"? Why not "An update to the Steam client is available, would you like to apply it?" instead of "Updating Steam..."?

I hope it requires Steam. It's the friendliest DRM out there. If you don't like it you're just going to have to deal with it because it's not going away any time soon.

These aren't workarounds they are options, get it through your head. You are making it sound like you have to trick the program into stopping autoupdates.

Because these would frustrate people to no end, can you imagine browsing the internet and steam pops up asking for you to accept a game update or a client update? Instead they opted for the auto-update option which occurs silently and without need for you to do anything which makes it much easier. If you really don't want an updated game, then go ahead and turn auto-updates off because they aren't forcing you to update.

As with all things there are certain to be flaws. Steam back in the day had issues mainly concerning connectivity and updates which was annoying. Nowadays the only stability problem I have run into is that sometimes the server bandwidth is exceeded and you are unable to download a hugely popular game just after realease from the steam store, but which is usually cleared up in about 10 minutes.

At this point if somebody offered me UbiSoft style DRM or Steamworks... I'd actually give it careful thought.

The fact of the matter is, initial impressions are what people remember. It's why Windows Vista failed, and it's why I'll never like Steam.

I've worked help desk for too many years at a large lan to ever put steam onto my computer. At least seven out of ten people who ask for help ask some version of the same question: "Why can't I play [insert steam game here]." No matter what Steam [censored] say, it is unreliable if you ever play in strange or unusual circumstances.

If the only way you can play Skyrim on the PC is with steam, I will not be buying anymore bethesda products.
