To Steam or not to Steam

Post » Thu Aug 19, 2010 12:30 am

I've been under the assumption that Skyrim would require Steam. However, I noticed at the bottom of the http://www.elderscrolls.com/ there are logos for Playstation Network, Xbox Live, and for Games for Windows. There is no Steam logo. I''m not coming to any certain conclusions, but It's interesting and cause for hope.

I'll hate if it requires Steam.

If they release it on steam, I would 100% buy it on that platform.

Games for Windows is quite different from Games for Windows Live. Basically it means "This game will work on Windows Vista/7"

If it requires Steam, I will get it on PS3.

Otherwise, I hope my PC can run it... :brokencomputer:

There is no Steam logo on the Fallout New Vegas page either.

Edit: Either way I don't mind if it works the way it did for Fallout.

I'll be buying it on steam during the preorder sales...then preloading it and playing it instantly at 12.

This is what I'd like to do. Only thing is the Steam collectors edition is just not the same as retail. (I bought 2 versions of F:NV >.< )

Swarley:
Can't change install path
Frequent mandatory updates of the client that not only take upwards of 5 minutes to complete, but they never tell you what they do.
Auto-updating, which frankly pisses some players off.
Additional hard drive memory and CPU footprint.

I don't care what they use for digital distribution, but my hard copy better not require steam. Its hard to make things more idiotic than that...

Maybe Bethesda hasn't updated that part?

I'm not entirely sure why you would like a different install path, tbh.

Frequent updates? Again tbh, if you're referring to the Steam client itself, doesn't appear to be that frequent.

Auto-updating, I can see being a problem for users with slower than ideal internet connections. But I'm certain this can be disabled, and Steam can be offline.

Memory and CPU footprint shouldn't be too big a problem for most users. Todays games still do not take full advantage of memory and CPU power on recent PC's. But some users want to leave as much resource available for the game. Any noticeable difference should be very minimal.

I do have to say the install pass does make me mad, but why does the automatic update make you mad? and really how much hard drive memory will it take up? and I have no idea what a CPU footprint is
I personally like the automatic updates, becuase it always takes me a while to do it myself, and live was absolutely terrible with updates, it took me around 2 hours to update bioshock becuase it would just download one at a time

NO!

Steam should be OPTIONAL not forced!

People should be able to buy the DVD version and play it without requiring Steam if they want to.

Don't care. Buying for PC, I would buy this for PC if it had Ubi's craptastic DRM. I am looking forward to Skyrim that much. Call me a really devoted fan, call me what you will. But idc, this game is worth it.

Yeah this is where I stand. Some people love steam, and some people love hard copies. Lets all get some love.
And if I have to install steam to play, I'll just get the 360 version and cry because I can't mod

Oh not to mention I've found Steam messes with my audio. I always wondered why my sound will ping pong up and down but I just accidentally discovered right now that it's because of Steam. Close Steam, audio goes back to normal level. Run Steam, volume bottoms out and is nearly undetectable.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=up863eQKGUI Isn't it one of the lesser evils?

The good, available option to download and save your disc in prestine condition. No disc required to play. Yay!
The bad if you will.... does require a one-time online authentication.

It's not like steam puts the game in some random folder all games are installed to the same directory, except separating Valve games and non-Valve games.
I hate when companies frequently update their software, Valve is horrible. You can check steam updates http://store.steampowered.com/news/.
You can turn auto-updating off (right click the game in your library > properties > updates > drop down menu "do not automatically update this game"
1.5GB? Really? It uses less than 1% of my ancient processor.

Maybe I want games installed on different hard drives. If the games all use Steam, I can't do that. Do you see the problem yet?
