Steam required for PC version

Post » Tue Jan 12, 2016 3:10 am

So I've recieved Fallout 4 gifted to me. I asked for the physical copy so that I wouldn't need to use steam. It turns out that my physical copy of the game doesn't contain all of the files for the game. So answer me this Bethesda, why the [censored] are you selling me a physical copy without all of the content?! Console players get all of their content on one disc, so why don't I?! If this is the new trend then I'm sure as [censored] not buying any more Bethesda products. Later on down the road, years from now when I want to come back to your game what am I meant to do? I'm [censored] out of luck because I have to download the rest of the files from steam. You're punishing your customers, forcing them to use drm, when the cd already has a drm copyright protection code. So you're telling me if I don't want to use steam I'm a pirate. A big [censored] you to all of your customers who want physical copies.

Just so you know, it was known long before it even released that it would use Steam.

Using Steam as DRM is one thing, having to download 20Gb to install from a "physical" copy is completely another.
I was mega pissed at this too. Took me 15 hours to 'install' my Pip-Boy edition. I paid a premium to not be be able to play the game on release day. Bethesda really dropped the ball on this one.

And before people start shouting "it was to prevent piracy" àla Pete Hines company line, I call [censored]! It has been discussed on here many times already and the general consensus is that it was on the pirate sites before release day. Way to go Bethesda, way to go.

I'm not excusing that, but just pointing out we knew before release day that it needs Steam.

And it's not to prevent piracy really, but to cut costs. How many disks would be needed do you think? Until Pcs start coming with Blu rays, we may well see more of this and less and less multi disk releases (What was the last AAA game on multiple disks?)

Also, was on the pirate sites because a number of stores were sending out and giving out copies up to two weeks before release day (Which actually breaks the contract they have with Bethesda to sell games. It's the sort of thing that gets stores in legal doodoo and staff sacked)

As always. Look into a mirror to find the culprit. If you didn't inform yourself before getting the game, it's your fault.

Pete Hines is quoted as saying it was to prevent piracy.

I agree that the slow uptake of Blu-ray on PC doesn't help. But that is still no excuse for not mentioning it at all in all the marketing and advertising. It isn't even on the box FFS.

As far as I am aware Grand Theft Auto 5 came on multiple DVD's on it's PC release. It costs pennies more, hardly going to make a difference in Bethesda's profits is it ;)

I agree with you on Steam, that was known in advance, just not 20Gbs worth. And likewise with the stores, I also heard that some of the pre-release pirates came from Steam preloads.

Well what can i say wellcome to the digital era, it rly has nothing to do with DRM but rather with reducing cost since vast majority of PCs dont come with Bluray drives so game wud need to be on multiple DVDs which is something most companies nowdays are trying to avoid and are pushing digital versions instead. Also you were able to preload the game if you preordered/bought it couple of days before lunch so you had enough time to download it before it unlocked. I do realise though that some people dont have good internet conections/monthly DL caps(semms thats especialy the case in USA) and that for them digital relases svck but its the way industry is pushing so expect more of that in the future.

Actualy the exact DL size was known at least few weeks prior to the preload period, there were quiet a few threads here on the forums about it as well, so its not like it was a secret or something but yeah as i mentioned before digital copies can be a problem for some people due to their internet conections/monthly DL caps.

The download size was rumoured for a couple of weeks previous. There was no official word from Bethesda prior to or since on the whole debacle.

And there was no way to pre-load a physical copy from Steam prior to launch day. Due to the fact you need the activation code, which is sealed inside the bloody physical copy! Lol ;)

But this has been discussed ad nauseam previously ;)

I was upset and annoyed with this too, just because I'm old school and I like to have the game on a disc if I was ever in a situation without interwebs.

I assume that the non-Steam people will never patch their games unless the patch comes out on disc?

Tell me it isn't so...

P.s. You do realise you can play the game with Steam offline, right?

Not everyone who plays on console bought the disk. My game was digitally purchased, which means all 72GB had to be downloaded.

This isn't to trivialize the situation, but PC games aren't on Bluray (much to Sony's chagrin, given they receive $2 for every game sold), so it would have been physically impossible to ship this game with a single DVD.

But there's one important factor missing: prior to launch, there was a major update pushed out. I'm not sure if this pertains to consoles only, but our original files were replaced with new files, giving me the impression a patch was pushed.

This is the digital age. If you think it's bad now, just wait: within 5 years, disks are going to go away. It'll all be digital, because companies want to make damn sure you never own what you thought you bought.

Preventing piracy sounds better than, it save us half a dollar on each copy.

Yes its an problem that copies of the game will leak to pirates before its sold, this might cause the pirate version getting released even before the official date.

But had they skipped the game with dummy executable and then required an steam update before launch they would be just as safe.

Was it the latest Metal Gear game that did that? All that was on the disk was a little exe that started a download?

don't you read anything about a product, before buying it?

the info, that you have to download the biggest part of the game and that the game is Steam-binded is absolutely everywhere...

every single Amazon review and every single PC review mentions it

I'll never understand how people get things, without even taking a quick look what others say about it

You can play Steam games offline. You can play X-Box One games offline. I do it all the time.

But yes, most PC games now require stuff like Steam to play. It's been like that for...a decade now if I'm not mistaken. Welcome to the digital age!

Because people don't do their research, and are then shocked when things don't go as they thought. Research is good, yes? :)

I am not really an achievement hunter so I would rather have it on my computer than on steam.
