.......and just wait to see what happens when Steam does an auto update to a heavily modded game. :brokencomputer:

Games [censored]. None of my saves work now, I reckon I was about level 20 or something, quite far in. This patch has damaged my save files. I didn't think their own patch would screw it up. Thanks beth.

What are you guys talking about? What's a "4GB patch"?

A hack that allows the game executable to use more than 1.8 GB of memory that 32 bit applications are limited to.

One way to solve the updating problem is to rename the memory patched TesV.exe, and then link to the renamed file. Steam will update the original TesV.exe file, and you can still keep running the patched file until Beth releases a fix.

"Hack" is such a dirty word... the LAA just brings the game into modern times where people have mroe than 2gb of RAM to work with. AND IT STOPS THE GAME FROM CRASHING! That's normally a good thing...

Try going back to the old EXE, open steam and let it download the new one. Then use whatever 4GB program you are using to apply the /largeadressaware flag to the new EXE file. Does this work? ( not at home right now )

The game will not launch once you patched the new exe with the memory aware mod, there's steam protection or something on it. No idea - using the old exe now. :)

My saves from a few days ago loaded fine (waiting till next update to play again). Though I wasn't using the modified exe.

I'm curious, what's this 4 GB patch everyone is talking about? I never had any problems running the game.

Maybe, but that's what it is :hehe: And my game has never been anywhere close to the memory limit. And crashed only three times during 100 hours, not counting the assured ones in Bonechill Passage.

A modified exe that lets the game use more RAM.

It allows the game to use more than 2gb memory, playing for long periods caused the game to crash at random - that memory patch fixed that.

Bethesda better makes Steam change this, because this is seriously pissing me off.

Okay, now I can't launch the game at all. I haven't installed any mods or patches or anything so I don't know what's up. The game launcher keeps kicking me back to the launcher every time I click play.

Good. I'd say that was the only real issue I had with the game. Two or three times a night. Just randomly crash.

Ahaha looks like Steam got mad people were playing without it. Thanks for the heads up, I'll just stay off Steam till Bethesda gets it's affairs in order.

OK, so here's an odd thing; I forgot to change back to my original TesV.exe before I logged on to Steam. When I realized my mistake I closed Steam & went to the Skyrim folder & found that the patched version was gone; only my backed up original was there. And since Steam thinks that I already downloaded the patch I had to verify my install so that the patch would re-download.

So, just to test it out I played with the updated version & crashed to desktop within 10 minutes, after 2 crash-free days of playing with the 4gb patched version. Glad I kept a copy of my patched file :).

Ok here is what I did:
- Disable automatic updates in Steam
- use the old 18.6MB TESV.exe and place it in Skyrim folder
- start Skyrim using the Launcher.

This way I have 4GB patch + I can use Steam Overlay and chat while playing.
