STEAM version vs. GOG.com version FALLOUT 1 + 2

Post » Sun Aug 25, 2013 8:17 am

i just got the steam fallout collection for just 1,5 bucks so i wanted to check before i activate my gift!

1. i want normally the soundtracks too from gog.com but i wanted to ask if those are maybe LEGALLY available for download anyway, or if the game (when installed) includes the soundtrack?

2. is the STEAM version also cut like the gog.com version? is the intro from fallout 1 and the kids cut? if so does someone know if the steam version is also fixable like the gog.com version?

I'm unsure about your first inquiry, but I'd download the FIXT mod from No Mutants Allowed to fix some of the cut content and all around improve the game.

Mark Morgan released a remastered soundtrack for free some time ago. Though the songs bleed into one another. If you have New Vegas for PC, it has all the the songs for 1 & 2 in its music folder.

I have the orginal CD versions of Fallout but I got tired of finding and installng patches so they would work. So I retired them and decided to buy and download them. I chose Steam and found I still needed patches to get them to run right. So I went to GoG.com and bought them from there and they worked right off the bat.

Going from my own experiance, I would say go with GoG.com.

As for it being cut... I downloaded from GoG and nothing was changed. Than again that was about a year ago or so, so maybe they went ahead and made changes. All I know is I can do all the things I could do back in the day with the version I got from GoG.

Well my version I got from GoG is untouched, just tested it out to make sure cause I don't often walk that evil of a path while playing. As I said GoG might have made changes to their version since I got mine but I don't see why they would. I guess we have to wait till someone buys from GoG can tests it out and reports back.

As for Steam, you can get patchs to get it to work right. But as I said I got tired of getting patches all the time, I might as well just keep using my orginal CD copies. Steam should come ready to play, but it doesn't. Well it might for some but not for me.

I cannot for the life of me find the case, I just ransacked my room and storage room looking for it. Anyway I bought the physical discs, because I've always hated downloads. I got mine from amazon for $5.00 during a sale. My first playthrough of Fallout 1 had no problems, but when transferring the game over to my newer laptop I had a few issues like the psychedelic colors or save inconsistencies. I downloaded the FIXT mod for Fallout 1 and Restoration Project for Fallout 2 and haven't had an issue since.

I also seem to have an exorbitant amount of luck, so if others had issues with physical discs then I'd take their word on it. I know Steam had a few issues with theirs and that GOG was the way to go with the originals. Either way the mods/patches are a must have, so it all comes down to whatever is easiest for yourself as the consumer. Either way you shouldn't have too much of a hassle.

Isn't that always the case with Steam? Everyone praises it so highly, but I cannot for the life of me figure out why. I get that it's convenient, but whenever internet goes out you're kind of screwed. Not to mention they usually have a crap load of issues.

In addition to my previous post i'd also like to add that I have some (not a lot) experience with modding, messing with the game files and running around censorship by switching out files with their Korean counterparts. So that might also contribute to my lack of issues when installing the NMA mods and running the game problem free.

Edit: Like I posted before, even if it works fine those mods I posted are a must have, they really improve the games and the modders did a phenomenal job.

Well GoG has sales from time to time. Also some countries would have some content removed, I think they were removed back when they orginally came out. The world wide thing might just be so that no matter where in the world you download it, if you live in that country it will be censored... I can't say.

And as DemonsBlade points out that if it comes censored, I am sure there would be mods out there to fix it.
