If no Steam, will game patch automatically?

Title basically says all. If I buy the retail-version of the game, will it be patched automatically? Over the gamesas or gamespy-account? Sry if this is a silly question, just want to be sure. Thanks for replies.

as long as you run the launcher to start the game it will patch on its own.
