Steam Workshop Content Theft

Post » Thu Dec 05, 2013 7:52 am

Hey guys,

The author of this mod:
http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=200055549

Has chosen to use a texture by me, published in my own mod:

http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=195241476

He has done so completely without my permission.

What should I do in this situation?
Ideally, I would like his mod taken down until he removes my texture from the sword, but can I make him do that?

What are my rights?

Thank you.

Ps, Anyone who has the time and morals; a comment or dislike on his mod would be greatly appreciated.

I have nothing against this individual personally, but I think it's important to take a stand when these things happen, and let people know that it is NOT okay...

Contact Steamworks and ask them if they will take down the mod.

I have sent them a ticket, but people say that it can take between 2-4 days and never for them to answer...
So I'm asking you guys...

Well, if enough people can report it on steam, it'll bump it up the list, but beyond that there's not a lot anyone can do here.

I don't know if Bethesda gets involved with these kinds of issues, they do come down on people using other game resources in mods. Give Steam 48 hours to address this and if they do not resolve this, then you could try giving a PM to Gstaff. However, I would give Steam a chance to rectify this first.

Okay. Thanks you guys (:

Still, any help letting the guy know that this is not cool is very much appreciated (:

Also; Who is Gstaff?

Gstaff is the community manager. Basically, Beths primary rep on these forums.

Can you send CrusaderKnight118 a message on the workshop?

Telling him you require your texture to be removed might be quicker than going through Steam.

It could have been an honest mistake on his part.

Give STEAM some time to respond.

I have given him a comment. I don't think there can be talk of a mistake. He stole my texture, I don't know what the mistake could be...?

I apologise for my impatience, but for every download he get's, I feel a little cheated.
This should not be happening in the first place...

He could be completely unaware of the unwritten rules among modders. (Always get permission)

But he has tarnished his reputation in the community, so he's the only one that loses in the end ;)
I hope Steam gets it pulled soon for you.

I'm not sure if it's "unwritten" on the Workshop, but it's a codified rule on Nexus. Permission and credit are required for usage of assets not your own on the Nexus, the default answer to usage is "No you may not" (as per the default settings on the "Permissions" portion of the Nexus upload wizard).

Thanks, bro. It means a lot to know that people sympathise, it really does!

I wrote in my Description, however, that any re-use were to be by permission, so either he ignored that or didn't bother to read my description before stealing my stuff...
I'm sorry, but this just pisses my off!
Thanks again though (:

I have tried to decipher the Workshop agreement on this point; while it states that Valve has the right to do pretty much whatever they want with your stuff, I'm not really sure what the policy is on other users using it... It states that commercial use is prohibited, but I don't know about re-uploading...
(It does that thing where it uses so many long words that laymen like me don't stand a chance of understanding it...)

It's an old link, but this should still be of value: http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1349500-mod-stealing-and-recopying/page-2#entry20338763

If reporting the content to Steam doesn't get you the results you want, follow the directions in the post and you should be able to get it taken care of soon.

Thank you so much! This is perfect!
I have commented on the mod, and depending on what the authors reaction is, I will shoot them an email.

Thank you (:
