Unfortunately, I doubt they are capable of adding support for Linux or the Mac. If you look at all the other support threads, they don't really seem to have managed Windows support very well. A lot of their engine tech is pretty old now, and I'm not sure it was really designed with portability in mind.
Most of the larger engine companies ( the ones that licence to others ) have properly rebuilt their engines in recent years to support multiple targets, but the smaller in-house developers like Bethesda are getting left behind.
I'm slightly surprised they are not more supportive of Valve's SteamOS initiative, since that aims to provide another console-like platform, but maybe it's all just too hard for them with this game. Perhaps they will manage a proper engine rebuild for the next TES release, particularly as Vulkan and D3D12 will be expected, and they are quite different from the current renderers.
If they do manage a SteamOS version, I'll certainly buy it; otherwise I'll probably give it a miss.
Well, I will buy the game for me and my girlfriend only when the linux port will come up. IMHO, there's a lot other of users that won't buy the game until the port, so there's a lot of lost profit. And I still hope that the SteamOS version will appear someday.
I'm another user that runs linux. And a purchase isn't viable for me without a port.
Valve's Source Engine Games have more performance on Linux than on Windows, according to Valve. So the potential is there. Maybe the games they used for benchmarks are just not optimized enough for Linux. Or Valve did a bad job at optimizing SteamOS, who known. It is very hard to objectively compare Linux and Windows, as Linux is not Linux but there are a lot of different Linux Distributions out there.
It's also interesting that they say that Win10 is slightly faster than Linux with general benchmarks. I have read reports which claim quite the opposite.
And there is the the largest problem at the moment
Developers don't create for Linux due to a small userbase
A lack of games means many people stay with windows
Windows gets more support and linux remains largely ignored
The cycle repeats
Until developers start giving more support to Linux, the userbase is held back and prevented from growing
It would be interesting to see what would happen if a few popular AAA games came out as a SteamOS exclusive
