"Steel Sword" - not Steel short sword or steel longs

Post » Thu Jul 28, 2011 4:25 am

After watching the E3 footage for about the 20th time, I noticed that the swords being shown off in the new inventory were named "iron sword" and "steel sword". There was no indication of whether or not they were short or long swords, although they looked long enough to be a longsword.

I'm actually ok with this to be honest, I almost never used shortswords in oblivion, they seemed pretty much inferior to the longsword in every way, and it bugged me when I got a lovely enchanted sword in oblivion only for it to be a shortsword, in other words gimped and ugly looking.

I agree. Shortswords were just lighter and weaker versions of longswords, and therefore were never used by me. I will not miss them if they are ommitted.

I would like to have short swords in the game, especially for dual-weilding purposes. For example, like if short swords were a "balanced" weapon and didn't incur a damage penalty for off-hand use.

That is to say, if there is such a penalty in Skyrim to begin with.

It was the only blade I ever used apart from daggers. :(

Personally, I would like everybody who thinks that something should be removed from the game merely because they never used it to be prohibited from even playing the game, much less commenting on it.

I'm not even kidding.

Yeah. And daggers were the fastest.
I guess they're cutting out the middleman if short swords are actually gone.

I hope they're in, but I'd be okay with it if they weren't. The best thing would be that each weapon had it's own reach, speed and damage, so there could be swords that were i.e. shorter than regular swords, but still longer than a shortsword, or a war-axe that was longer than the regular ones, but slower. Then maybe there would be reason to still use the Steel Broadsword instead of the Elven one if you wanted more power and longer reach. Maybe.

I don't think anyone is saying that they want it removed. I think everyone that says that don't use shortswords would be ok with them removed because they will not be missed.

I'm playing through the shivering isles right now, and i havent come across one short sword yet, about 10 hours spent in it. Doesn't irk me, but all the same if shortswords are actually in I suppose it would be good news.

I just hope claymores are still in. I haven't seen any claymores yet. And I hope they are a viable alternative to sword and shield.

I never used claymores or shortswords, but that doesn't mean there weren't people who did. As well, everyone is always talking about different fighting styles based on things as trivial as spears, which is basically a sharpened staff without charge... except for the fact that you can't hit people with staves, I'm sure y'all get my drift.

As far as whether or not they're in game... well, for me personally, no big deal. For other people, it's a huge deal, just like the spears/throwing weapons/levitation/mark+call magic.

But when it all comes down to it, we're all going to buy the game, and there's a really great chance that we'll all be very pleased and pleasantly surprised despite our praises and bellyaches.
Because we... well...

Maybe the weapon crafting system allows for blades of shorter or longer length?

I suppose it depends on whether the weapon crafting system is as in-depth as the armor crafting system - and the armor crafting system is as in-depth as it's been hyped up to be.

What incentive does Beth have to keep various features available if the majority response is simply, "meh..."

Well, depending on the recoil time of the enemy you block, you can fit in 3-4 strokes where with a longsword you could only fit 2-3. The difference in their damage was insignificant, maybe a few more points, but some people would rather have that possible extra hit in there, and with duel wielding, who knows how fast duel short swords would swing in comparison to two "long"swords.

As for this "Steel sword" being some sort of sign that there's no different blade sizes, I doubt that very much. They probably just didn't put the name in there since you can literally see the blade yourself. Or maybe it's like that one guy said, they just removed the term "long".

Oh, another thing I recall, is that in Angry... Angry somebody's interview with Todd, the only criticism was with the UI, and Todd said that what was showed in the gameplay footage was certainly not the be all end all. Perhaps they weren't finished entering sword names? Like, specifying them, that is. But yes, the sword in the inventory looked very much like a longsword. But, since we're not working on the project, all we can do is wait and see. ^_^

I'm probably in the minority here but I actually like short swords. My main character is a Wood Elf and he carries a Elven short sword, why? It looks bad-ass. Not just that, he is not very strong and can't carry a lot, a bow is his main weapon but a short sword is a good backup as a dagger is pretty useless to him (I say to "him" not that they are useless period, I use a dagger for another character). Long swords weigh too much for him. I hope they are in as someone pointed up duel wielding with a long and short sword would be cool.

The elven shortsword did look pretty nice, and if it kept the same design and was simply elongated to become a longsword and even a claymore i would be so happy, because that sort of elven curve in lord of the rings looked really awesome.
