Stephen Hawking Warns of Hostile Space Invaders

Post » Tue Mar 15, 2011 3:31 am

really? that's crazy.... is that the actual name of it, Voyager 1? isn't that, like, Star Trek?

http://voyager.jpl.nasa.gov/ It's not quite there yet, but is near the edge of our solar system. If I remember correctly it contains some basic information on humans, and possibly what our solar system looks like, it's been a while since I did some reading on the subject

EDIT: folks, lets try to keep this as civil as possible. calling Hawking dumb, and calling other members sad, is not wanted in this thread. Please keep it out of this thread.

Equally, if we were to contact some aliens, that would only be possible if we were the technologically superior race, in which case it wouldn't be a risk for us to contact them.

just because we were able to contact them first doesn't necessarily mean we're the superior race. for all we know, they're simply intelligent enough not to go around the universe screaming of their existence.

I still maintain that crossing the infinite abyss know as space is impossible, and if some species does have technology to cross it, they'll be a bit more civilised than that. Take humans for example, we'll kill ourselves long before we get to kill aliens :)

"I imagine they might exist in massive ships, having used up all the resources from their home planet. Such advanced aliens would perhaps become nomads, looking to conquer and colonise whatever planets they can reach. "

Wasn't that the plot of Independence Day?

In ID they were likened to lucust's. That would really svck for us if that were to be the case. Personally I would rather them to be like the Vulcans were during first contact.

I hope there is no other life froms in space. (which will be very unlikely)
We humans have enough issues even without having to deal with them.

Too true. We barely coexist peacefully on this planet by ourselves, why should we think adding a truly alien civilization to the mix would make things any better? If ever we did make contact with aliens here on Earth, the ones to start the war would probably be us...

Lol calling Stephen Hawking dumb. You're sad.

Just sayin', there's ought to be better ways he could serve humanity than making vague comments and assumptions with little to no justification. And I said dumb for a physicist, and there are different kinds of dumb, he's obviously smart in some kind of way. I'm just thinking he could do some actual work in stead of making unjustified assumptions about a topic which isn't all that important at the time. If he was really smart, he'd realize that. Unless he's realizes he wouldn't have to work if he can get enough media coverage with what he knows is stupid comments, in which case he's very smart but lazy and egotistic.

Albert Einstein was also one of the greatest minds of humanity, and he was the first to admit that he wasn't very smart when it came to other stuff than the physics. They're both very left-brained people and only smart in one particular way, that is what I'm trying to say here.

Stephen Hawking: More brains in his little finger than all of us have in our entire bodies.

Avoiding contact with an aliens species would not be bad advice, at least until we can live amongst ourselves without trying to kill ourselves.

IMO: An alien race that has progressed to the point of interstellar travel, likely would've evolved to the point of being a relatively peaceful species, otherwise I think they would've wound up destroying themselves before they reached that stage in their evolution. Then again I could be wrong and they'd be hellbent on the destruction of every living thing in the universe.

But such advanced alien race would look down to us, like we see monkeys, or even some lesser animals like dogs.
In their eyes, we are just ant nest in a huge forest.

And question is. Do they like stomp insects?

You mean like teaching mathematics at Cambridge for 30 years, theorising (and eventually discovering) many new aspects to black holes and the nature of the universe, and writing an acclaimed bestseller called A Brief History of Time, all from the confines of his wheelchair while almost completely paralysed? It's not like he's spent his entire life spreading alien invasion theories; his thoughts about alien life are among many which have occupied his time. And his assertions are not without anology from our own history: "first contact" situations have rarely ended in favor of the indigenous population.

Which is why I don't believe that at our current stage of evolution, that we would be interesting enough to warrant such attention from an alien species. Maybe in another hundred years or so we might be getting closer to that stage of technological advancement, and that may be the stage where we would need to be careful of any potential contact with other worlds.

Also our planet might be point of interest. That is if they are carbon based life forms like us and find our (polluted) planet habitable. They could sweep humanity with ease.

Nah, I say we pull a Kirk on them :hubbahubba:

But really, we did take a picture of http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20110110/ap_on_sc/us_sci_space_blob already, so it's only a matter of time before we are consumed by the Outer God.

I never implied that he's never done anything useful, just that this interview was. And yeah, the first contact situations thing wasn't what I thought was stupid, it was the avoid contact part, which I already explained. But, regarding that sending signals out in space in order to contact aliens stuff, I actually agree with him.

So, then it could be a matter of them being interested in Earth itself, and not so much as the population. if that is the case that could be very disturbing indeed. That then begs the question; What happens to us? The end of humanity? Or do we become some form of human/alien hybrid species, or something altogether different.

I think if they only wanted our planet, be it for resources or living space, they would either eradicate us or make us slaves. I find it difficult to believe we would manage to come to some kind of trading agreement. we most likely wouldn't understand their technology.
