I renamed it DLCShiveringIsles.BSA and that worked. But Mart's Monster Mod - .BSA did not work. Never undertood how these things work...

A BSA will load if the beginning of its name is the same as an active ESP. So, for Mart's Monster Mod.BSA to work, you have to have a Mart's Monster Mod ESP active.

What meshes for body replacers are you talking about here? Do you mean http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=24078

Yes. But I realised I advise this topping up at step 16, while the body replacers themselves are installed at step 19.
Thanks to you I moved the topping up procedure after the body replacer mods themselves have been installed (step 19) and link was inserted.
Thanks for pointing this to me :D

I have a couple questions.

I have been roughly following your example. I am currently working on a huge FCOM build that I am trying to do in stages. Here is my current load order, which is stage 1:

Now, I have ran into a couple bugs.

First, somehow I missed that one of these mods is causing a magic icon to briefly display in my top right corner of the screen. I have used Rens and UOP's menus to try to fix the issue, to no avail. Any idea what other mod could be causing this? (there is purple smoke that goes with it when I install Supreme Magicka)

Second, I have made EVERYTHING I have into an omod. That above list is 30 omods. Is it possible for omods not to install correctly once they get past a certain size? I have had missing meshes for both OOO and Armamentarium (as per formid finder), and I know full well that I have everything installed for each.

Lastly, I use BOSS to sort and tag my files in Wrye Bash. When I build my bashed patch, I simply check everything that has a box, next to the tweaks I dont want, and I don't check any cells except for after I load All Natural Weather. Is this the correct way?

Your list has been very helpful in avoiding pitfalls as I've been working on installing on my new system. I do have on question though, about step 9:

"9. I installed Unofficial Shivering isles Patch (USIP) 1.4, also optimized by default, renamed it DLC Shivvering Isles.esp and got rid of the dummy esp, thus saving one slot."

Can you please elaborate on what you mean by renaming the patch file and that thereby saving you a slot? There are two v's in the name there, so I'm assuming you're not overwriting the Shivering Isles DLC esp itself, which presumably would be bad :), and from what I've read in the readmes for the unofficial patches you shouldn't try to merge the unofficial patches with other mods. So, it's not clear to me how you're saving a slot.

Hi guys I'm trying to PYFFI the architecture folder but 12 hours passed and isn't finished.
I can PYFFI the subfolders of the architecture folder one by one?

You need a strong processor,And it's handy to run together more then one task PYFFi beacause one task doest't load CPU at 100%.

Activating Omods with OBMM means that either
  • each omod you activate overwrites any common files with any previously activated omod - OR -
  • you choose one-by-one which files to overwrite or not during activation.
What this means for a large modlist is that activation order is of supreme importance if you want to make sure you keep the files you want on top.

BAIN is much more useful for keeping track of which files overwrite which other files. You can change the install order on the fly. You can anneal, which can put back files previously overwritten after you change the install order around. You can uninstall and replace the files that the now uninstalled mod had overwritten. On and on and on. Just a whole lot more control available to you.

I myself use BAIN for 95% of my installation. I only use omods for some mods which don't overwrite anything, or for UI mods.

I think this means that you just delete the DLCShiveringIsles.esp (Backup first), then rename the Unofficial SI Patch DLCShiveringIsles.esp. This is because DLCShiveringIsles is just a blank esp that's used to load the bsa's, so it can be any file as long as it's named this.

Hi guys,

About the green textures post killing of an enemy - I wonder if this is connected to the repeated crashing I and some other FCOM installers have been experiencing.

The crashing i'm talking about occurs consistently whenever a new character tries to exit the starting Imperial Sewers. It was so consistent that i finally "coc'd" out of the sewers and just started playing the game. However the crashes continued, particularly when changing cells - especially when exiting cities into the Tamriel. In addition, I was experiencing the "green skin of death" of some of the enemies I killed.

I was ripping my hair out in frustration, I tried to do completely clean installs of Oblivion and then pure FCOM - following the dev-akm instructions to the 't'. I would try playing a new character after installing each overhaul in the FCOM installation process. Interestingly, none of them caused crashes when exiting the beginning sewers - even when I had OOO, MMM, and Fran's W/O FCOM (though I had Bashed together the leveled lists). Finally, I then installed FCOM and... the crashing began.

I was reading somewhere for the green skin of death issue, to put MMM.bsa in the "sArchiveList" line of the Oblivion.ini. I figured, "hey, if FCOM is calling on this bsa and it's failing to get to it for some reason - maybe that's what's causing the crashes".

Well I don't know if my reasoning was correct, but once I added MMM.bsa to that line in the .ini file, I didn't have any crashes with full FCOM installed and no green skin of death either (with a new or old character). I've added a bunch of the mods suggested in OP list and more - and there hasn't been a hint of a crash as yet. (I also use Ob Crash prevention system, Fast exit, and OSR - maybe those help?);

Anywho - I hope this sheds some useful info on a couple issues.

cheers!

Of course having that BSA not load is causing crashes. And right at the sewers is common because there are people just across the river who always have MMM equipment.

That's why the instructions for MMM and FCOM tell you that you have to rename the BSA file. There are one of several names you have to use depending on how your game is set up, but it is all explained in both the MMM and FCOM threads.

hmm, yeah that's the thing. I solely relied on the http://devnull.sweetdanger.net/convergence.html website for instructions on how to Install FCOM. This was particularly because the instructions here specifically say there is no readme or other instructions: "this is it". Unfortunately, in these instructions it does not say anything about renaming the bsa or adding it to the "sArchiveList" line in the .ini file.

I don't know how involved dev-akm still is with scene, but if that bit of instruction were added to his instructions that would be enormously helpful. In fact, I don't think that info is included in Blade of Mercy's list either. Since it seems blade's gracious intention was to condense everything an FCOM installer needs to know into one place, it may be fitting to add the bsa rename info to the OP list.

Was directed tohttp://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1079991-relz-fcomconvergance/ that I wish I had stumbled across before.

I know I had to search the forums for quite a while to finally wind it down to a solution.

cheers!

I'm pretty sure Blade Of Mercy would agree that he didn't create this thread as an area for general issues arising from FCOM but that's what's beginning to take shape with some of the latter posts here.
As is pointed out in the opening post, this thread is aimed at installing a trouble free heavily modded FCOM game and not a problem solving area.
For those and general questions about the mod the http://http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1079991-relz-fcomconvergance/ would be the place to post.

Thanks, that makes total sense. I had just been assuming Shivering Isles was like the Morrowind Expansions where all the extra content was in the Tribunal and Bloodmoon files, but your feedback prompted me to look at the file in the construction set and this step makes perfect sense.

I second what Shikishima just wrote above, but I add the following: To attempt an FCOM installation without reading at the bare minimum the first two posts of the official FCOM thread is a mistake. Disasters will follow.

Well look at that! In all my FCOM installation projects I have either willfully or unintentionally (I hope mostly unintentionally) overlooked http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1079991-relz-fcomconvergance/. Much better resource than the obviously outdated site I have been using along...

I mean http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=9423 This mod gives me lots of fun. It also gives my saves some bloat but |I can live with it. :D

To all the disillusioned, dissatisfied players:
Did you read the first warning? Does it say RTFM? Well, did you RTFM? No? Then don't complain :D
Did you read the third warning? Do you follow discussion on these (and other FCOM related) treads? No? We can't do it for you, guys... :D
Did you try to skip a few steps? Yes? Well, I told you not to, didn't I?
To remind you guys, this is how to build it slowly, painstakingly but stable. Big time stable. But this isn't to cancel all homework.
This is an addition to it :D

Okay, one more question here :

and yes, I RTFM before ;)

I have installed COBL with the COBL Balanced Races component. Do I still have to install Race Balancing Project or is it already included in COBL?

Cobl Balanced Races is Race Balancing Project Lite, essentially.

Installing both will result in one overwriting the other, depending on load order.

So, no point really.

SORRY FOR THE RETARDED HUGE POST

:)

SNACKS! as this process takes about 12 hours to complete..
Pizza, cheap beer and cigarettes I have found were COMPLETELY necessary to calm my nerves in front the possibility of installing modifications for 8 hours, and then find I forgot to patch something thus complicating and ruining my test. (In fact, EVEN IF THIS PROCESS FAILS, I will be posting my results!)
This Process actually took me a totally of 12 days to compile, but I worked at it when I could..

PATIENCE is necessary. (I am running low on that! :)

LET IT BEGIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

------------------
Preliminary Work.
------------------

1. Had a cigarette and ran Oblivion Install Cleaner. I am playing with fire right now, as my registery probably has inklings of something like DarnUI, and ... humnn... I think I just beat the game with nothing but Oblivion Vanilla and DarnUI... soo I should be good. I think. The gamer inside me needs FCOM.

2. Set Oblivion for ULTRA HIGH settings just to get started (I will be tweaking this as I know my computer can play
on High, but I can't stress how exceptionally beautiful this game looks on a ULTRA HIGH end system and set-up
properly. Ran oblivion quickly from a couple saved saves from previous installs just to see how it looks.

3. lol.... Ok, so it didn't work. Obviously something is conflicting even after running Oblivion Install Cleaner.
I still really appreciate what Backtrace has made.. but it looks like I should have known better :/ ... Going to
run thru the process as I previously mentioned from Karmul Bashkir. Sigh... It takes about 25 minutes (at most)
and is highly appreciated that he put it together--- but it still svcks for me. Cleaning my computer of ALL remnants of Oblivion.
Humnn.. I couldn't delete a specific temp folder.. but oh well.. I could most definitely figure it out, but for all things oblivion, I am going to continue leaving just 1 .dat folder in my windows/temp folder. I may run a registry cleaner that I trust like CrapCleaner or something after fully uninstalling oblivion. (note: CCLEANER)

I saved all of my Save files, but made sure to delete all of the autosave.bak and whatnots.. I just saved the actual saves. (I have had numerous experiences of faulty .bak files ruining games, and then finding the best remedy was just deleting an autosave and viola! game fixed.

ON another personal note, following Karmuls excellent guide, I really wish all uninstall methods were as thorough as his guide.

I didn't find Oblivion in my windows/microsoft/unistall ... but I did find some things on the unofficial patch. Part of me knows I should uninstall these things, so I went to add/remove programs and removed them there.
Looks good!
Going to restart my computer and install Oblivion GOTY edition after running CrapCleaner!
K everything looks ok.

4. Installed Oblivion:TES IV to C:\Program Files\Bethesda Softworks\Oblivion (DO NOTE THAT WINDOWS VISTA AND 7 USERS HAVE MORE HEADACHES THAN ME!) I am on windows XP sp3.

5. Installed Shivering Isles, but like I mentioned, I am running Game of the Year Edition. or (GOTY)... So the patch is worthless to me. I still downloaded it anyway :? lol

I also edited the Oblivion.ini file for music and borders (I love oblivions music don't get me wrong but I love how bethseda has created a game that you can just wander into an become svcked into the atmosphere.. the music killed that immersiveness for me many times.)

I decided against using Blade of Mercy's uGridDistantCount and tree range, as I am unsure how our systems are similar. I have messed with these parameters before and had BSOD's, so I should probably check my drivers lol or not try to set this at 10000000 lol ;)

6. Tested Oblivion.
Ok things look really good. Game is running smooth, and I am loving the new colors I have optimized with Nvidia settings.
A site of worthy mention is

http://www.tweakguides.com/Oblivion_1.html

Some things of personal note, I prefer FALLOUT 3's controls to oblivions, thus moving action key to the "E" key and thus switching jump to "Space Bar"... furthermore, I changed ready weapon and vanity view from R to F to match Fallout 3's controls respectively. Just works better for me. Everything looks really good.
Going to check for fragmentation with the new install with a utility and see if everything is acceptable. Humnn.. Things will MOST DEFINITELY have to be defragged by the end of this test. But for now, let us begin with the good stuff!

----------------------
NECESSARY UTILITIES.
----------------------

7. OBMM! version 1.1.12.
http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=2097
I Installed OBMM.exe to the actual Oblivion folder just to keep memory free as I jam out to music and enjoy the

process, as opposed to running the zip file from my utility.
I created a desktop icon,
but furthermore,

I created a SHORTCUT of the executable Oblivion Mod Manager
(Renamed to "A shortcut to OBMM" and placed it my C:\Program Files\Bethesda Softworks\Oblivion\Data
So I can quickly navigate and edit my load order from a quick tab within My Computer favorites tabs.
Most helpful and increases workflow ten-fold especially when you add Wrye Bash and BOSS..

JUST MY PROCESS BTW!

this probably won't work well for you.
Or maybe?

8. Extracted OBSE 18beta6 to C:\Program Files\Bethesda Softworks\Oblivion...

I will go ahead and CUT and PASTE all of the containing folders from
C:\Program Files\Bethesda Softworks\Oblivion\obse_0018_beta_6
out of and into the main directory of Oblivion as to mock initiate OBSE-- OBSE is gangster ---
and is one of the greatest scripting extensions known to man.
I also move the read-only files.. No big deal. SRC folder included.

9. Installed Wrye Python 01 ... Very cool.. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU! This has all the necessary utilities to run Wrye Bash among various updates to Python that make the game and GUI run faster (I think) lol

10. Installed Wrye Bash,

Soooo freaking epic. Do note this must go into C:\Program Files\Bethesda Softworks\Oblivion...

READ THE E'FFING README! (RTFM BTW)....

Wrye Bash IS exceptionally advanced. The Manual is your new best friend, make sure to read it and to REFERENCE IT while using Wrye Bash.

I also copied a launchable shortcut of Wrye Bash from the MOPY file into my OBLIVION\DATA folder just to increase

workflow even more. Titled it "A Shortcut To Wrye Bash".

11. Installed PyFFi... Never even heard of pyffi until seeing this thread. Installing the PyFFI 2.1.3.

12. Installed "wxPython2.8-ansi-py25 Setup"... I hope 2.5 and 2.8 are cool.. My experience coding with python is

na-da.

13. BOSS is BOSS lol.. Installed Boss 1.41 and the new master list from the TESnexus site. Yay.
I check BOSS after every load. Of any .esp. Just at least to set dates hehe

14. Extracted TES4EDIT to oblivion and ran the program... Looks good!

15. Installed TES4Gecko... I did have to get the Updated Java stuff... READ THE FRICKIN' MANUAL/Readmes

(slapsforehead)

TES4Gecko works,.... But is kind of scary and confusing... I mean.. I understand the idea.. but wow..... High five

Gecko Team. Great job! Going to be a crash course when combining .esps and masters... YAY
(NOTE TO SELF, TRY FO3EDIT)

16. I LOVE TES4LODGEN... In fact, I think in previous installs of oblivion I really focused on Really Almost

Everything Viewable From a Distance or RAEVWD... Totally immersable. LOVE this utility. Thank you!

17. Installed Pluggyv125b to "C:\Program Files\Bethesda Softworks\Oblivion\Data\OBSE\plugins".. READ THE MANUAL!

18. Installed Oblivion Stutter Remover.... It goes in the same place as Pluggy... I have used this utility before,

but I didn't see noticeable results.. I will know personally on this reinstall if it will.

19. Installed Elys Uncapper. THANK YOU!

20. Fast Exit (Changed my Oblivion Life!!)

21. Installed Ely's Universal Voices. YAY! Kudo's for Blade of Mercy for pointing this out sooner in load

orders! I usually install this mod at last second!

22. Installed Operation Optimization... Why not? ... Never used it before.. Going to test Oblivion now. Yup.

Awesome.

23. Got the Unofficial Oblivion Patch v 3.2.0 up and running... Things are looking better and better!!

24. Manually extracted the Unofficial Oblivion Patch Hotfix. Overwrote everything necessary.

25. Ran the Unofficial Shivering Isle Patch... Also noted, ran archiveinvalidated... I do know that OBMM has an amazing aliteration of the archive, but I question how useful it really is-- Something I dislike about modders, is they don't follow the International Standardization Organizations layout for any executable file on ANY operating system... ISO is very boring, but ISO related documentation for all Utilities would be nice.... meh.. Archive
Invalidated!!!... I mean-- don't get me wrong! OBMM is amazing and it's OBVIOUSLY useful, but archive invalidation as a utility is useful too...
I choose to do that next. Great!--- everything is working within Oblivion.

26. Ran archive invalidated from Quarn.. thanks! (Probably will do this again near the end as well...) I know
this utility is probably outdated with OBMM and such, but better safe than sorry with huge yellow exclamation
points!!!! Can't stress archive mindfulness.. probably 90 percent of problems are due to archive or just
ignorance. K!!!! LESSON LEARNT! Archive Invalidated only redates archives... heh

27. svcks that I could not run the Oblivion RAM.... still I pyffied the 8 folders as mentioned by Blades of Mercy.

Pyffied the Oblivion MESHES Folder
not the Textures btw heh... ahem

DO NOT PYFFI UNLESS YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING! you have been warned.
-- I don't know what I am doing at this point either, so I am warning myself.
"Stripifying"?
Architecture,
clutter,
dungeons,
furniture,
landscape,
plants,
rocks....

Humnnnn!!
Very very very important you read this:

-----------------------------------> http://cs.elderscrolls.com/constwiki/index.php/Nif_Optimization

VERY EPIC and ADVANCED technique .... I tip my hat to you all, thank you thank you thank you!
OPTIONAL STEP!!!!!!!!!!
Thinking now.. I should have installed Blender and NifSkope around 4 years ago lol....
Another thing next in step 29, is installing the Construction Set and Blender and NIFskope!

You do NOT need these for FCOM ----- Construction Set, or blender....

They are just small executable programs for design implementation for oblivion, but it's all the cool little utilities for making your own edits or creations via .esp/.esm with the construction set that is interesting. (Not user friendly in my opinion-- read the freaking manuals and ALL of the online resources.)

installing these programs should have came BEFORE you even stick the Oblivion disk in your CD/DVD player. around step
1. If you were to install these programs at step 50 it would not make a difference.. they are separate utilities.
Anyway, pyffieing my oblivion took about 120 minutes AT BEST.. maybe 3 hours?
I started cooking snacks.. and then I proceeded to test Oblivion. Great
Lets do this

----------------------------
FCOM INSTALL.
________________

28.
Installed Francesco's... By far the hardest part of FCOM.
You need both his downloads. Ceatures Items and Add-ons.
Follow the cheat sheet from the FCOM convergence site.

But the story remains the same:

""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""
During installation of Fran's base mod, we recommend the following options:

Shivering Isles version(Optional)
MOBS
hardcoe Loot
Separate files (Required! CRITICAL!)
Living Economy(Optional; Never use at the same time as standalone LE!)
Optional items add-on(Recommended! Requires separate BSA download!)
Optional chance of more enemies (Only if you picked SI option)
Optional chance of stronger bosses (Required)
Optional chance of stronger enemies (Required)
Optional leveled guards(Only if you picked SI option)

NOTE: The files marked required above must be installed even for a non-SI setup!
""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""

oh well.... notice number 17 in sword of forgiveness's tutorial hehe..

48. DAY 5... DO NOTE that if you try and play your game AT all you will experience NOTHING BUT CRASHES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ABORT install

or
fix... humnnnnnnn.... hahah NEVER! READ THE FRICKIN' READMES!!!!! BAh!!! heh
This can be that Scary because even with using boss and wrye bash, someone who is relatively new to all these mods can't be completely sure. Continuing on pure luck because I think I have messed up, Haven't gotten to convergence YET!
Installed VASE.....

49. Installed VASE MMM patch

50. Installed ALEX... These three mods look great!

51. Installed COBL thru the OMOD...
MERGING!

52. Installed the Cobl Races..

53. Item Inter-change
ONLY MERGE!

54. Chose against using body replacers.. Tried loading Lost Paladins of the Divines, but no luck... (??)

55. Installed Ruined Tails Tale.
I remember this mod from 3 years ago......

56. Installed Ruined Tails Tale Patch.

57. Mighty Umbra.

58. Mysteries of the Dulan Cult.

59. Mannimarco Revisted

60. Mannimarco Revisted for OOO

61. Installed Blood and Mud...
Isn't there a patch for this?!

63. Installed Tamerial Traverls for OOO so it works with FCOM

FAAAAAAAAAAAAAIIIIIIIIILLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Massive failure... sigh

I took all the archives and placed them into obmm\mods\ and the ufcom script didn't activate!!!
OPERATOR ERROR!!! MOST DEFINITELY!
sigh...

restart

BACK TO STEP 1!

1. Had a cigarette and ran Oblivion Install Cleaner. I am playing with fire right now...
I should have paid more attention to the finer details... I think in my giddiness and iffy download order.
I have pics of every mod detailed here, and many others, with somewhat direct directions... again staring at 20 or so "readmes" when you have a question on a mod really svcks.. Or forgetting one Important STEP!....

I will try again later, but I have decided to test the turning on/off idea with Fallout3 and test my exploding cars.

If I happen to get the urge to retry FCOM, I will make sure to check the forums!
So basically:

FCOM

1

ALIVIDLIFE

0

for now.........

DECIDED to test same idea of step 49 and 50 with Fallout 3.
It worked flawlessly.
In fact,
if anything thank you for that much!

----------------------
LESSON LEARNED.
______________________

YOU MUST READ THE READMES AND THE FORUMS TO RECREATE THIS PROCESS!!!
RTFM indeed!!!!

That's where I went wrong... Especially step 17.... I messed up around there and perhaps installed a bunch of incorrect material because I didn't rename the MMM.bsa to Convergence, and I didn't install convergence correctly, overwriting important data that should not of been...
Backups Backups Backups....
anyway
Thank you for this wonderful guide, I will perhaps try again but wait for a newer version of MMM or FCOM. I have downloaded every version of every file I can and saved them all in backup drives.

Cobl Balanced Races is Race Balancing Project Lite, essentially.

Installing both will result in one overwriting the other, depending on load order.

So, no point really.

Thanks for the answer. I was suspecting it was the case. I just have to see about the better classes, it's the only feature RBP has and CBP doesn't that interest me, because, well, wings and things like that... ;)

I can no longer find the The Oblivion Performance Project thread.

I bumped it within the last few weeks to maybe a month ago and fear that it is now lost to the void of forum updating.

I've searched several times with no luck even in searching my own posts.

Anyone have a link or better luck at searching than myself? Need it for a thread I'm writing.

It seems that the TOPP threads have died off, but there is a http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&ct=res&cd=1&ved=0CAgQFjAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fsites.google.com%2Fsite%2Fballofflame%2Ftheoblivionperformanceproject&ei=fr-oS97MIYWKlwf59MSYAQ&usg=AFQjCNFymB7rhjiTfvbfagFy-rtbotrV0A&sig2=_LuSE5shtmwHnD9Y4141Bw. It seems pretty easy to google for topics if they still exist on the forums by searching for "%topic of interest% Bethesda." The TOPP search did not turn up any gamesas forum results.

Thanks.

There is no reason it should have died off though - I myself just bumped that thread within the very recent past. Should not have been purged.

That will have to do.

[edit] NO WAIT!! I found it: http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/881204-the-oblivion-performance-project-topp/ not purged and still there.

Must've been blind - or too tired to see it.

Oh, wow, you just posted there too, haha. I have tried keeping those types of thread bookmarked, but there always seems to be a new one when I want to use the bookmark (or link.)

The Mounted Combat mod by flyfightflee as listed in the OP caused many problems and CTDs for me.

Also this is an excellent oblivion installation guide. I had decided to come back to oblivion after 3 years of not playing it and I can safely say that I have never had oblivion running so smoothly and stable.
Back in 2006/2007 I would CTD as much as every 5 minutes and had FPS ranges in the single figures.
But now I have hardly ever CTD at all and I have playable FPS even in heavy combat.

I never though I would get oblivion running so well at fairly good settings with HDR and Large texture size on my computer that was bought in the first half of 2005!
