yes this thread is most instructive and helpful indeed. Thanks for your comments. Ok... so I ran the pyffi on some 6018 meshes in the 8 folders Blade mentioned in the #1 post. I did not do it by hand but with one of the automators available on Texnexus. There are basically 2: One that is rather slow called "Automator" and the other one which is an "Alpha 5" release. That Alpha Tool is the better one, I think, as it writes the pyffied files to a separate folder. And it's quick because it supports multi core PC's. It ran the 6000 meshes through in like less than 4 hours or so. So I used that.

But: On some 57 meshes it would say "Failed" in the logfile. But I'm not sure it that means a bad mesh to start with or because that mesh had some ".egm" association or whatever else...

EDIT: Actually it would say "Pyffie Fail..." I have an example here:

Pyffi Fail - C:\Dokumente und Einstellungen\Tommy.TOMMY-E8400\Desktop\Pyffi 50 2.Lauf\architecture\anvil\anvildooruc01.nif

I'm somewhat puzzled about those 57 meshes that Alpha5 did not process, because I let Automator run on those and it would pyffie them... So I'm wondering if they are both using the same method or if one is the better pyffi-cator than the other... Have you got any experience with one or the other? I understand that there is also the right-click method. Is this possibly even better or more reliable? It was just convenience to let the pfyffi-ing done by one of the automatic tools.

And yeah, I will pack the pyffied files in a .7z archive now and will install them with BAIN.

Alpha 5 one is better... IMO much better - autoskips egm associated meshes, multicore support. What version of PyFFI do you have? (those files run fine for me - and there was a rare stripification bug fixed in 2.0.5 (current release, released November 26th). with both right click method or the older Automator, you do need to get any meshes with egm association out or they'll go appear wonky in game.
They both (and right clickcing) run the same PyFFI scripts though, so the end result on the meshes is identical.
Is this even the case with hair, body, and helmets with .egm files now too? If so, PyFFI has come a long way indeed. Those 3 file types are the most prone to disaster. Last time I did hair files I ended up with lots of square black blotches on NPC heads, and body meshes suffered similar artifacting.

nope not with egm files yet... that may occur at some point though - can hope anyways... probably a bit above my level of skill but I'll mention it to Amorilia next time I send a pull request.

What version of PyFFI do you have?

I have Pyffi 2.0.5.win32, I downloaded that from Sourceforge.

I totally agree on the technical superiority of Alpha5. However what struck me strange was that in those 8 folders I was pyffi-ing, the actual file count when looking at the folder settings with Explorer was 6063 files, but when I started Alpha5, in the apps window it said only 6018 files. Then was the issue with 57 of those 6018 files saying "Failure" as per my earlier post, but these I could pyffi with Automator tool, except for one file for which I reported a bug in the Sourceforge project page for Pyffi.

I put together a more detailed post tomorrow, describing better what Alpha5 did for me. Maybe we can clear a few more things then.

Yes absolutely. I helped me a lot too! If there is one thing that Blade may have forgotten or missed: There is a very useful "Oblivion Crash Prevention System" plugin. To be used similar to OBSE, that is you copy only a .dll file into the OBSE plugins directory. It's no longer maintained but it still handles a good chunk of potential crashes. I know it because the tool makes a protocol of its work :) Funnily, I get only one distinct error but then usually once in every gaming session. I'm using it alongside all the other .dll plugins and it is cooperating very well. I would recommend it to anybody.

Just to remind you, guys.

This is not a tread to boast with my (almost non existing PC and gaming) skills.

This is a tread whose advices, if followed correctly, will let you play as trouble free as possible.

When I first posted my original steps, there was a load disagreement on almost every step.

I melted the best suggestion into what you now see as post #1.

In post #2 I added today my latest load order just in case it might give you ideas about mods to add or load order to alter. Far from perfect probably but allowing me to play anything I fancy.
The goal is to create an installation and load order of the most trouble free modded Oblivion game possible, so that when a novice starts doing it they do it quick and carefree (as much as it is possible with monster like our MOdblivion games :D).
I'll try to add gradually links to the thingies i mention but it takes time and I have also to play, right? :D
please let me know if there is a mistake or something needs updating.

Enjoy and share your experience so that one day it could be done blindfolded!

I would like to see this thread stickied. I am not planning on playing Oblivion again for another few months, but I do check into the board on occasion just to see what's going on. Saw this thread a couple of days ago and was really impressed with the info, but today it was already on page three. So, please sticky?

Last play through a half year ago, I decided to go "full BAIN," rolling my own even for Frans/OOO/MMM, all FCOM-friendly mods, and deprecated the use of omods entirely. With adherence to FCOM and similar load order guides, a little tweaking of the BOSS list for unknown mods, care with BASH tags, and so on, it was my most stable time playing ever. With over 100 mods, I must say testing each individually would have dissuaded me from playing again, though (although making all those BAIN packages was a chore, to be sure.)

I don't mention this to question the OP method, which as I say I will return to look at next time around, but really to ask if omods and OBMM are still a "must" for many of you. I found "pure" Wrye Bash+BOSS+load-order-care gave me the best result ever (though I recall using OBMM for one task which slips my recall now, but it was not for use with omods at all).

Well, I tried following this guide about a week ago, but didn't really get that far... I just wasn't motivated enough to spend so much time just to play modded Oblivion. Not that this is a bad guide, though, it just takes an extremely long time to do everything.

@Hlafordlaes- Maybe what you used OBMM for was some sort of Archive Invalidation (like BSA redirection or something?)

I'm getting heavy stutter in my game, specifically when i move around my mouse and when loanding new cells. but it's not in every area, sometimes i'm on a very dense part of an forest and it doesnt even stutter when the game loads another cell, even when i'm in combat with 4 or more NPCs, but when i'm near a cave or fort with some bandits/raiders or any other kind, my game freezes for about 5 or more seconds.
what i'm trying to say is that my game acts very strange, theorically i was 'supposed' to have stutters in dense forests, specially in combat with alot of npcs (less than 20-15 FPS) but i don't have any freezing at all. and when i'm near a fort/cave or something i have too much lag with 4 or 5 actors near me (considering that i have 30+ FPS in a place like this).
Maybe it's some corrupted spawn ? or currupted AI paths ? And it's the same thing with Fallout 3.
My Specs are: C2D E4700 2.6GHz, 2GB DDR2 800, 8600GT 512Mb and Windows 7 x64. Tried lowering Textures/Graphics and no-no.
I think my Load Order is very good, followed exactly the steps provided by this thread OP along with some good ol' researching over the forum, no crashes at all so far, been playing for 4-5h+ without a single crash. Using Qarls LOD Replacement 4096x4096. the only thing annoying me is the strange stutter/freezing.

For that Game: FCOM + UL +BBC + RBP + TIE... you want too much from this CPU and this RAM and this card... sorry.
My suggestion (bet you won't like it :D) - sacrifice. Yep.
Try playing without TIE. All the secret entrances (and much more) are integrated into the better Cities, as well as quite a few NPC, so you won't see much difference.
What is 82 X.Races.Comp.esp? How does interact with BRP?
Next suggestion: as you play most of Better Cities why so many files? Merge, i.e. avoid unnecessary conflicts
Do you want to try lighter game? Give it a try for a week? Cut down Unique Landscapes. The LOOK. gorgeous. They don't help your GAME.

Yeah, i see your point man. Modding Oblivion is very complicated when it comes to stutter+smooth gameplay and graphics, i've been seeing this for quite a few time now since i've installed Oblivion again and dug up some good ol fashioned mods from my HDD.
I'll try running the game without TIE and see what happens when it comes to performance wise.

X Races Comp was some race mod that i d'led from Nexus a few days ago, but i have no ideia how it does interacts with RBP as i didn't see anything ralated in the readme, but i was feeling to give it a shot anyways.

You mean merging Better Citties in one .esp or doing so in Wrye Bash? sorry but i don't know what you meant with that.
Maybe i'll avoid UL for a while and see what happens to my game too.
I wanted to make my game as complete as possible with all the enhancements and DLCs that i would find suitable for me, but it didn't realise that having all those DLCs would affect performance on my game, i'll try lowering them too!
About All Natural, i've seen a little difference when i disabled it entirely, gave me about 1 or 2 FPS and using Skyranger1's Stutter remover and Fast Exit too (without Streamline, might give it a shot later too).

You see, the main problem here is all those stutters, i even get them in Vanilla although much less stutter than modded Oblivion. i consider my game very playable above 25FPS and that's what i mostly get (except on IC running BC). The thing is that some mod is making my game stutter like crazy here (either conflicts with other mods or my PC is not handling well that much mods). i think the most odd thing is that when i'm on a very very dense part of a forest, in combat or not, my game does not even stutter at all running smoothly all the time. but in some less demanding area, it starts to freeze/hang/stutter or whatever you may call it. that's the most odd thing that happens.

Anyways, I want to thank you for helping, i'm gonna follow up your advices here as i did with your guide on the first page as they helped me to build my crash-free game (except the stutters, but that's something with my rig i assume). Thanks Blade Of Mercy !

I'll give you some slightly simpler advice:

FCOM and Better Cities are your two biggest fps eaters. You will probably still experience slowdowns and stuttering with those two loaded even if you axe all your other mods.

Second, Oblivion Stutter Remover (OSR) can help a lot.

After all is done and said, DO NOT FORGET to unchek all your mods and start new game, name your char 'A' or whatever and turn one mod/load game/save/exit and repeat the procedure untill all your mods that must be active are active.
Then rebuild your bashed patch, then create your character. Many people come to cry 'I have CTDs!' or 'I have weird things!' simply because they turn on huge bunch of mods at once.

I don't exactly understand why this IS necessary. ;) Does it really increase overall stability?

It has been proven that if you activate more than a 2-3 mods simultaneously, especially mods contradicting each other,
your game will show quite a few peculiarities and strange things begin to happen.
I heard that, ignored it and when I tried turning the mods one by one, I realized my game is much more stable and pleasant.
So, I insist that turning mods one by one is much better than just installing them and start the game.

If you're going from zero installed mods to 50 installed mods in one go, you can be pretty certain something unintended will happen. Then you have to crawl backwards disabling a few, re-start, see how it plays, if it's not good disable a few more, re-start, test-play... So the choice is basically yours if you prefer to be patient at the beginning or patient once it doesn't work as you thought... in any case installing / enabling a lot of mods at the same time is not a sensible idea. But you are free to find it out for yourself :D

I asked because I never really had any problems after installing 40-60 mods and activating everything at the same time. But then again, I never really played more than 1-2 hours non-stop. I'll try this method, just in case. ;)

It's more about the debugging and error-isolation that is easier if you only have to check out the last one or two mods you enabled before the screw-up. Once you have a bit of experience you will know that a certain combination of mods will alwys work together flawlessly, so these you can always install at once, then just add the stuff where you are not so sure about if they will work correctly.

As to load order, BOSS is always a good starting point (but you may have read that here already).

Well, I took every step you advised me to take, and now I'm turning on my mods one by one. And then save exit and turn another mod on. But I just did that, and I got a CTD. It was random, because when I went back to the same spot, it didn't CTD anymore. The crashed happened already after 10 seconds of walking around. What have I done wrong? I'm afraid that this CTD is the start of a lot of random CTD's.

Where is you MMMforFrans.esp that is needed , you gotta have this, else it will not work right..

Well, I took every step you advised me to take, and now I'm turning on my mods one by one. And then save exit and turn another mod on. But I just did that, and I got a CTD. It was random, because when I went back to the same spot, it didn't CTD anymore. The crashed happened already after 10 seconds of walking around. What have I done wrong? I'm afraid that this CTD is the start of a lot of random CTD's.


This isn't really a troubleshooting area for FCOM problems as I'm certain Blade of Mercy would agree.
