Thanks for help, now just to wait for architecture folder to finish >.> .
This question is way off topic but is there any way to disable this new forum theme? It's very slow on firefox for some reason and I prefer old black and grey one ^^.

It is slow for me as well. I thought I might have seen an option like that in Settings, but I have not tried it.

You shouldn't double post. You already have http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1095312-activating-mods-en-mass-need-help-please for the very same question.

I got lazy, uninstalled 3.2.4; installed 3.2.5 on top of whole game - persistent CTDs all over the place!. Reinstalled all game introducing Hotfix 3.2.5 when appropriate - no CTD for 2-3 days. Still think I am joking? So., how to do it?

"Reinstalled all game"... So you're saying if we upgrade a mod the proper way to do it is uninstall the entire game and reinstall everything??

9. I installed Unofficial Shivering isles Patch (USIP) 1.4, also optimized by default, renamed it DLC Shivvering Isles.esp and got rid of the dummy esp, thus saving one slot.

from the USIP nexus page:

Q: Will this conflict with OOO/MMM/Fran's/FCOM etc.? Is it alright to use together?
A: Yes the Unofficial Shivering Isles Patch does conflict but nothing that is known to cause problems, other than not receiving some of the advertised fixes from USIP; always load USIP before any other mod and you'll be fine. If you're using Fran's (MOBS or non-MOBS) a Fran's version of the USIP is available here. If you're using FCOM also install the "Frans Optional Leveled Quests-SI Only.esp" available from the same location. There's also an FCOM-only version there without the Fran's Amber/Madness overhaul.

Not totally sure which file from http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=17621 would then be the right choice.

Appreciate the thread man, thanks.

Do I need to install VASE as a separate mod? Wasn't it integrated in latest MMM update?

As I understand it, Diverse Wisps was integrated into FCOM. VASE is Vacuity's follow-up mod -- many more and different kinds of new creatures. So, yes, install VASE as a separate mod.

Perhaps VASE will one day be incorporated into MMM -- that seems to be Vacuity's hope. But it isn't yet.

Man, I am tired of reinstalling Oblivion every single time an inexplicable CTD occurs... I better follow this guide now onwards...I almost did this except the pyffi'ng part, which I never really understood (some modders do it for us, eg. Arthmoor), so just did not bother.

But now I am [censored] sick and tired of these [censored] CTDs now *Samuel Jackson mode*

You know what? Reinstalling the whole game is almost never a good answer for CTD and other mod problems. Also, this guide is very much overkill, and many of the steps are more akin to personal superstition than to technical understanding or good sensible practice.

I have not Pyffied any meshes. I have only cleaned some of the mods in my load order. I do not follow the advice about turning on ESMs and ESPs one at a time.

I use BAIN to install as much as I can, OBMM for the few remaning. That way, uninstalling is a breeze when I do run into a problem. I begin with FCOM and COBL and the UOP. I make sure that setup is working. If not, I work on that and only that until I get it working. Usually - almost always - a problem at this point indicates a mistake in installing. Then, I add small groups of mods slowly, reading the readmes and asking questions on the forum if I don't understand something. I playtest in between to make sure things are showing up like I understand they should.

Also, I rebuild the bashed patch every time I add or subtract a mod from my load order. And I always keep up with the Wrye Bash and BOSS threads, because I learn a ton by reading them.

And, you know the result? I seldom get CTDs. Maybe every fourth playthrough, if that. I'm just careful. There's no magic method. There's just learning and being careful and making mistakes and asking questions and more learning.

I suspect that most gamestopping problems are the result of
  • a mistake in installation
  • missing a key piece of information in a readme
  • rushing the process
  • installing a problem mod
  • expecting to play for over four hours at a time without a CTD

+1 to this. Every bit of it.*

Not to say the OP isn't (or can't be) useful to anyone, of course. But there are certainly a variety of ways to go about "FCOM++". I know this from experience - including right now, in fact! Zero CTDs, glorious to play and to behold, smooth as can be... and, didn't follow any of the advice in the OP of this thread. :P

Then again, for those who find the "50 Steps" to work for them - fantastic! :) Success stories are always nice, in the heavily modded Obliviverse.

* Oh, except I did PyFFI some meshes. But not every last one, that's for sure.

http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1084204-bain-mod-installation-projects/ installation means rarely having to reinstall.

There are always exceptions like hard drive issues and the like but for the kind of trouble shooting he is hoping to do BAIN is the best avenue.

...couldn't agree more. Bain gives you the power to control your install. You can add, subtract, experiment, etc without breaking your game. I may be wrong (correct me!) but I think Blade went that way...

I read ReadMes. I Pyffi everthing I install. I clean what I feel I understand...

...and my game is fairly stable on a relatively low end system.

During my time installing and playing modded Oblivion I've rarely had a "new" problem... reading the threads in this fine forum by the guys who actually create these magical mods is an education, and almost always provides the answer... operator error!!! :brokencomputer:

Thanks to everyone who has answered my questions (while addressing someone else  ). :foodndrink:

After yet another reinstall, (last game has too many plugins and crashed) I am utilizing this again (with extra BAIN.) Unfortunately the link to L.A.M.E is broken. Apparetnly theelderscrolls.info is broken. Is there a mirror for L.A.M.E? If not, what's going on?

EDIT: Nevermind, apparently there's some sort of domain switch. http://tes.multimediaxis.de/?go=dlfile&fileid=219 That is the new L.A.M.E URL. (No I don't know how the shorten the url into a word)

I actually used BAIN in my last install. But had to go with OBMM for some mods, but 75% is all BAIN. Problem is mostly with WB bashed patches not loading my existing savegames. And then I install a few mods, and later (much later), the game decides to throw up because of that.

Psymon and Tomlong's advice is really the reason I switched to BAIN, and I like it a lot. The only problem (and issue I have) is the mod repackaging. if only evry modder made a BAIN friendly package!!!

Hopefully a 100% BAIN install will make it alright now...

alright - I can tell by reading a few posts that you are going too fast.

I suppose this is an issue with starting with FCOM - people get the impression that adding in large amounts of mods at a time will be as easy as adding in the basic or even extended FCOM mods. It won't though.

Adding mods to your game will take you hours per esp to properly repackage, clean, test, retest, and then play. It is annoying but only if you expect that each mod should be easy. What Gothemasticator says is right on the mark and I know because I've read him post the exact same thing often in the same thread where I'm posting the exact same thing many many times. You want a quick fix? There isn't one. You just get quicker at doing the details that we all have to go through.

Choose the install method you are going to use (You know my bias) then get your basic overhaul install and whatever race/leveling mod you are going to use installed and then play test for hours.

You do not have to keep the character after all - it does not have to be perfect from the beginning. Then after you are certain of stability you then add one (that is right only one) mod and then play test for hours.

By play test I mean do as many things as you can think of in the game: Fast travel, fight your way across many cells, go in and out of interiors in fast succession, complete a quest or two, engage in all types of dialogue, buy and sell. Use those skills, go to those world spaces. in the game.

Think about how mods are related to hardware:
Sound mods - problems may arise - what is your sound card?
Texture replacers - what is your video card?
Mods that add AI behavior (combat and such) - what is your CPU?

Go slow - think tortoise and the hare. Eventually you will build that mod list that are your regulars and you will know these mods - what they feel like to play, the common issues they may have, who was involved in making them, etc.

Even in that there will be instances where you will be making compromises - To ask for a completely crash free game is not reasonable and reinstalling is over-reacting. As if reinstalling will suddenly fix anything or wipe the slate clean when you add the same issue back on top.

I experience crashes and at near 400 esm/esp (and not counting replacers) that is not surprising at all. In fact it takes far less to unbalance my game than it does someone who only has 50 mods. The more you add the more work you create for yourself.

Then learn to find the relz threads and ask there for issues after you are sure that it hasn't been reported before and you know it is that mod that is causing it. You are thrashing about not knowing where to get help and hoping that random posts will give the quick fix.

[edit] OH yeah if the game will not load after removing a mod and - each and every time that you add or remove an esp/esm you must rebash your patch. Not doing that is likely what is leading you to this issue. Beyond that there are tricks to get the game to load such as removing a master from the save game, creating dummy esp and so on.

Hallo, as I understand there's no reason (or even it's not recommended) for installing 4 GB patch on Windows XP 32BIT with 3 GB RAM, that's right?

Well, AFAIK, Oblivion can recognize up to 2GB RAM. 32-bit OS can recognize up to 3, but this does not mean Oblivion is able to do it. You can always try.
And, of course would be even better to buy yourself Alienware with 24 GB RAM :D

Hah! that is the spirit!

That is exactly the attitude I had.

Still even so like those before me I return to say that there are no short cuts on the essential things.

You can either debug with each addition OR you can debug a mountain of additions all at once - the choice is yours. For Oblivion it was the latter for F3 it was the former. Because I learned my lesson. Guess which one crashes more?

If I take anything away from fallout it's that you should enjoy what you can get away with and never push anything ever. Which is to say a very zen like state that would have me sitting in the corner content as I die of dehydration. I choose to blow it all to hell sir. My particular problem ended up a full reinstall not getting rid of my retardedly edited oblivion.ini or save games or wrye bash nonsense in my documents.

Yes, but I am thinking about the these "special patches":
The game cannot recognize more than 2 GB RAM without special patches (see section tools). The good news is the 4GB patch works miracles - tried it myself.
I have Win XP 32bit with 3 GB RAM, system "knows" about all of them and now I wonder if "special patches" can halp Oblivion to use 3 GB (or they work only on 64bit systems)?
