Personally this is why I think that we are not getting spears, first we ask for spears, if we manage to get them we ask to throw them, then since we can throw spears, why not throw axes, daggers, darts, and stars. Don't get me wrong, I would love to see it, give the game some more variety, but I think it would be quite a bit of work to implement it with any semblance of balance. So I ask, can we just wait and see if the bows are as good as they say they are? After that go forward to ask them for such a task to add all the wonderful little stuff which we can use to bombard our enemies from afar.
And as for the issue of less weapons, we went from 6 weapon skills in Morrowind, to 3 in Oblivion, and to 3 in Skyrim with perks. Unless you happen to know the exact figure for the next TES game, then trend has flattened out.
The problem is, they already claimed to go "all out" on bows in Oblivion, and it was underwhelming. We only had 1 type of bow, minus the material it was made out of. No longbows, shortbows, recurve, composite, or crossbows. Just bows.
And I can easily balance all throwing weapons. All weapons can be thrown, with varying success. Daggers are light and small, so you can carry quite a few. Axes are larger, do more damage, and have slightly longer range than knives (except two handed versions) but they are heavier and larger, so you can't have more than 3 or 4 at a time (usually one or two) Spears have a long distance, do more damage than knives and less than axes. Most likely to break. Longswords can be thrown, but have very, very poor range, and only a small chance to hit properly. Maces can be thrown, but have very short range and do poor damage (may get a knockdown if hitting the head)
"Actually, swords and knives are the most common weapons in the world for most of recorded history. Also, most of the people that miss spears are those that say thatthey didn't like Oblivion because it looked too much like medieval Europe... "
@Sleign.. Oldest weapon goes club, (spear, hatchet, knife) sword. Can't really say which came first among those 3 in parentheses. Spears could be as simple as sharpened sticks, but as complex as a knife attached to a long handle, so it's hard to say which came first. Hatches are even simpler than knifes, and you can sharpen just one side of a large piece of flint or w/e before attaching it to a hilt. Come to think of it, the oldest tool I can think of is called a "hand axe" which is basically a sharpened rock held in the fist.
But anyway...spears survived since prehistory up to the gun powder era.
