Still dodging the issue of spears

Post » Tue May 17, 2011 6:35 am

While it upsets me that they do not specifically mention spears, they might still be in due to the ambiguity about the "2-handed weapons" part. :celebration:

""Sigh"" Do you know anything at all about the Greeks they used spears and shields and the main weapons in warefare for hundreds of years. And it was damn effective did you see 300. Yes I know it is not historicly acurate but the usage of the spears and sheilds are. I just wanted to clear that up :)

My guess is that they're currently not in, but they might get in there before release. I doubt Bethesda are really opposed to putting spears in; it's just a matter of priorities and opportunity. They think they might have some time to put them in, but don't want to say yay or nay until things are more certain.

In OB Blunt/Axes were combine, but here they have different perk paths, so that is a step up, its not all doom and gloom. Plus the perks makes it easier to add mods for new weapon type and have them integrate into the game more seamlessly.

I'm looking for some sort of comfort in this statement, but am finding none. How is 18 skills down from 21 a step up? How is everything not being stepped down? You'd have to be blind to not see the general trend. And again, simply not worrying, saying mods will solve everything isn't going to cut it. Mods should NEVER have to add missing basics to the game

In the recent GI update, they mention that warriors can choose to wield shields, daggers, swords, axes, maces, and 2-handed weapons.

While it upsets me that they do not specifically mention spears, they might still be in due to the ambiguity about the "2-handed weapons" part. :celebration:

Maybe they haven't started working on making spears yet, but they will if they have the time, and are not confirming/disproving the option because of that.

I thought that as well. The part that gets me though is that spears would be grouped in with "2-handed weapons" if they aren't left out entirely. That means one handed spears are not in game. There goes my plan for a Hoplite class.

i'm kinda worried about TES' continuous drop in the amount of skills present in each game... Morrowind had a TON and let you choose minor skills too, then Oblivion dropped a few and I was like "alright fine" and now with Skyrim cutting yet more, I'm kinda like 'what?.... :("

you can have a short spear and a long spear. One for each class and would have different strengths

You should play Demons Souls to get your spear fix on

Here's what I think spears should be like in Skyrim...a two handed weapon to keep enemies at a distance, but say there is a guy at a distance coming towards you or running away. So you hit a button and your spear goes to one of your hands and an aiming reticle appears, and now like a bow you pull the spear back and launch it at your enemy. One hit kill of course, but the only downside is, now that you've thrown it you lose your weapon untill you can retrieve it or find another one.

Sounds good I think haha....thats what I'm hoping for. :mage:

Sounds really cool. I would love to be able to stab someone and chuck my spear at them to finish off fleeing enemies.

See, IF Beth. is adding spears/crossbows, constantly asking about them will just make the devs laugh to themselves while they keep you in the dark about it until you play the game.

Spears are awesome. Beth took them out of MW because no one used them, because they made them wrong. Even if you only have 1 type of spear (8 foot) it can still be held one or two handed. It can be thrown. They would do great stabbing damage, minimal slash damage, and almost no chop damage.

Disadvantages: Heavy (for thrown weapons) Fragile (as a melee weapon)

I doubt we will see spears. I think it will continue Oblivions trend of only a few weapon types.
I'd love to be wrong. More is better!

There was concept art of a Halberd in the background in the behind the scenes GI update, in the background. :D

Had to go looking to make sure. I was expecting to see something too obscure to really tell what it was. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v662/Lemunde/Skyrim%20Vid%20Pics/WalkthroughVidSnap00006.jpg No question about it. Not quite a spear but it's getting there.

Edit: Wait, what's that other guy holding?

Personally this is why I think that we are not getting spears, first we ask for spears, if we manage to get them we ask to throw them, then since we can throw spears, why not throw axes, daggers, darts, and stars. Don't get me wrong, I would love to see it, give the game some more variety, but I think it would be quite a bit of work to implement it with any semblance of balance. So I ask, can we just wait and see if the bows are as good as they say they are? After that go forward to ask them for such a task to add all the wonderful little stuff which we can use to bombard our enemies from afar.

And as for the issue of less weapons, we went from 6 weapon skills in Morrowind, to 3 in Oblivion, and to 3 in Skyrim with perks. Unless you happen to know the exact figure for the next TES game, then trend has flattened out.

Well I would like to see spears put back in the game now that the backpedaling kiting issue was fixed but I really don't see what is so amazing about spears. I really think people love spears so much because they were so abusable in Morrowind. There is this unhealthy worship of spears that really needs to stop <_<

With skills current trend here's what I expect for TES VI

1. Fitness (endurance, acrobatics, athletics, strength, sneak, block)

2. Magic (spell schools, alchemy, intelligence and wisdom)

3. Weapons

A medieval RPG without spears is just wrong, imo. It's like a western without cowboys, like a farm without animals, like a starsystem without planets, like a... Okay... It's wroooong!!!

Yeah gee, I wonder why people are so upset about the most common weapon in the world for most of recorded history being absent...

From my understanding, the combat skills are unarmed, marksman, 1-handed and 2-handed. Since there's only so many ways to swing a weapon (or thrust it), it makes sense that they'd cut down on weapon skills. What's a dagger, except for a shorter, lighter sword? What makes a claymore functionally different to a battleaxe? Look at Fallout: New Vegas. A minigun is big and heavy, but it's still a gun. It uses bullets and requires aim. Why have a "big guns" skill when a generic "guns" one works just fine?

I'm sure a weapon nut could go on for hours about the differences, but let's face it. There comes a point when realism in a game gets ridiculous, and gets in the way of fun.

And with things like finishing moves, there's clearly support for multiple animations for any given weapon, so having combat skills actually relate to things like the way you use a weapon, instead of arbitrary categories... it makes sense.

Then there's magic. Enchanting is clearly different to Mysticism, but Alteration is more or less identical to Mysticism, which also happens to share some similarities to Thaumaturgy (from Daggerfall). It makes sense to combine all three "altering the laws of physics" schools of magic, and (I assume) have Soul Trap become an Enchanting spell. This way, all the different schools of magic are actually different to each other.

I for one, welcome our new insect overlords. :)

Actually, swords and knives are the most common weapons in the world for most of recorded history. Also, most of the people that miss spears are those that say that they didn't like Oblivion because it looked too much like medieval Europe...

But like I said, I would like to see the return of spears now that they are no longer broken but if they don't ever return, I won't shed a tear.

The problem is, they already claimed to go "all out" on bows in Oblivion, and it was underwhelming. We only had 1 type of bow, minus the material it was made out of. No longbows, shortbows, recurve, composite, or crossbows. Just bows.

And I can easily balance all throwing weapons. All weapons can be thrown, with varying success. Daggers are light and small, so you can carry quite a few. Axes are larger, do more damage, and have slightly longer range than knives (except two handed versions) but they are heavier and larger, so you can't have more than 3 or 4 at a time (usually one or two) Spears have a long distance, do more damage than knives and less than axes. Most likely to break. Longswords can be thrown, but have very, very poor range, and only a small chance to hit properly. Maces can be thrown, but have very short range and do poor damage (may get a knockdown if hitting the head)

"Actually, swords and knives are the most common weapons in the world for most of recorded history. Also, most of the people that miss spears are those that say thatthey didn't like Oblivion because it looked too much like medieval Europe... "

@Sleign.. Oldest weapon goes club, (spear, hatchet, knife) sword. Can't really say which came first among those 3 in parentheses. Spears could be as simple as sharpened sticks, but as complex as a knife attached to a long handle, so it's hard to say which came first. Hatches are even simpler than knifes, and you can sharpen just one side of a large piece of flint or w/e before attaching it to a hilt. Come to think of it, the oldest tool I can think of is called a "hand axe" which is basically a sharpened rock held in the fist.

But anyway...spears survived since prehistory up to the gun powder era.
