Still dodging the issue of spears

Post » Tue May 17, 2011 4:43 am

In the recent GI update, they mention that warriors can choose to wield shields, daggers, swords, axes, maces, and 2-handed weapons.

While it upsets me that they do not specifically mention spears, they might still be in due to the ambiguity about the "2-handed weapons" part. :celebration:

Maybe they haven't started working on making spears yet, but they will if they have the time, and are not confirming/disproving the option because of that.

There was concept art of a Halberd in the background in the behind the scenes GI update, in the background. :D

I think they are out. I want them all to be in, that would be awesome. But I think the fact that they haven't said anything on them combined with the fact they removed them in Oblivion means they won't be in and they merely don't mention it because it isn't something they see as an issue.

Taking out spears in a setting like Skyrim would be a outright stupid decision from Bethesda. Spears was one of the major weapons during the stone age, viking age - middle age and so on. Not having them in the world would be so strange and annoying to be honest. Crossbows, well would love them, but they can go if they must, but spears? they have no excuse to take them out!

I agree. Especially with Spears probably being very useful against a dragon. But sometimes game devs go in a way other than we like.

And with the way they say they are making combat. Ican see spears being so useful. Keeping your enemies at bay, taking out charging enemies. And that Dragonslayer vibe to.

But still
@vadagar

How can you be sure?

All these reasons are good reasons but not things that prove tehy are going to incluide them.

A halberd basically can be used as a spear, or swung like an axe. If they do the work to add that, I'm sure spears will be in

Given all the fan clamour, it would have been astounding for them not to have at least namechecked them in any of their pre-release stuff, especially when dealing with combat, were they to be in the game.

All bets say: not in.

I am still set on egging Todd Howard's ... everything ... if there aren't spears. Especially if they don't give an explanation why they didn't put them in.

I think spears have gone the way of Dwemer - two-handed surely refers to Claymores and Hammers. from the way combat is being described I'm not sure i could poke someone once staggered - although the whole point of a spear is to keep them at bay and not let them touch you.

Concept art for Oblivion featured spears as well. I still don't understand their reasons for axing them. Is it simply because the animations for spears would have to be different from every other two-handed weapon in the game? They don't want to make a new set of animations for one weapon type, when they know that about 70% of all players will just use a sword anyway?

Poppycock! I want spears, so I can roleplay as a spear wielding, naked Argonian again.

I was hoping they would see the errors of their ways in Oblivion and go back to a more comprehensive weapon skill system. I fear that they may be heading towards the route of Fable 3, which only had swords, hammers and guns, and was an astoundingly terrible game. Morrowind had spears, pole arms, throwing knives, throwing stars, crossbows, and then what happened in Oblivion? Did people suddenly forget the deadliness of pointed sticks? What happened to the most common, basic weapon ever conceived?

And I still to this day cannot figure out how skill in swinging a giant two handed claymore transfers over to skill in stealthily handling a small sharp dagger.
Come on Bethesda. Your fans aren't as stupid as you think. We don't need all these skills to be lumped together "for our convenience".

What's next for Elder Scrolls 6? The Weapon skill?

In OB Blunt/Axes were combine, but here they have different perk paths, so that is a step up, its not all doom and gloom. Plus the perks makes it easier to add mods for new weapon type and have them integrate into the game more seamlessly.

It very well could be.

Still, yeah, I think the ambiguity is deliberate. They're messing with us. The issue is always carefully walked around.

I guess they removed spears in Oblivion, because people could easily exploit the walking backwards whilst attacking tactic and staying outside of your enemies range.
This wasn't a problem in Morrowind, because if you hit the enemy you wouldn't always hit.

Since Dwenmer are returning in Skyrim, I think we might also see the Dwarven Crossbow. (It would be funny if they made the crossbow realistically slow, just to annoy us).

A. They don't have spears, and don't want to read the whining when we find out.

B. Beth loves watching us squirm about spears here on the forums, and loves it. They got us by the nads.

C. They are oblivious to the whole NEED TO SEE SPEARS issue and just didn't get around to it or think about it.
