I can't go back to playing vanilla for a few reasons.

Morrowind Code Patch and the Unofficial Patch. Fixes so many things Bethesda should have.

Harvesting ingredients without mods is a pain in the ass, especially in Grazelands and Azura's Coast where there is a ton of wickwheat, saltrice and especially marshmerrow. I like having the plant disappear or change when I harvest so I know I harvested from them. Graphic Herbalism for the win.

Adding in my own custom houses. Bethesda's idea of player housing when they put in so much collectible stuff the game was...well, saying it's inadequate is as nice as I can get about the matter.

And other mods, some I won't play without, have just added so much atmosphere, cool stuff, etc. to the game, playing without them would just not be the same.

That said, I still play mostly a vanilla game. I haven't added any mods that change how the main quest or faction quests play out though a few of my mods add more quests to the game, but separate from what Bethesda put in.

Morrowind was a masterpiece in its own way, but it wasn't perfect. Mods at least give you a chance to fix what isn't.

Well said.

I will never play vanilla again (and I did play for the first 3 years on Xbox... and loved it)
But why would I go back to playing a game with thousands of bugs and glitches?

I have no problem playing without mods in general, (there's only a small handful I would truly miss) but the two unofficial patches are essential.

Odd how that is.. For some games an expansion is considered non-vanilla. For others it just means mods. OH INTERNET BE CONSISTENT WITH YOUR DEFINITIONS.

Yes I know, I ask too much of the world.

Main three mods are bug fixes (that's a reason as well), Overhaul (just for the looks), and Character Development (got bored of rushing for a bed).

Mostly vanilla. For my first play through (some years ago now, but post Oblivion) I got a little way into the world, stopped and searched the web for a character replacer. Sorry Beth, but the character meshes are just hideous - even for a 2002 game. The character animations are ropey too, but I can live with their rough charm.

I'm fine with the look of the world. The only mods I use in that regard are FPS optimizer to extend the view distance a little, and to enlarge the UI so I can read the text at 1920x1200 without a microscope. I tried a few texture replacers, but I find high res textures look odd with the low poly world and ruin the aesthetic, so I stick with vanilla... Connary's cave textures possibly work better than vanilla though.

So, I basically use: the unofficial patch (essential to squash the bugs); Better heads; better bodies; Solf's better beasts; Better Clothes; Fashionable Merchants (so merchants don't wear the stuff you sell them); Real Signposts (for easier navigation), and that's it.

anyone can put anything into the internet, so if you confused, just pick one best for you or just figure out something for your self.
too much asks = too much answers = confusing

it's.. tempting..

Now that, my friend, is profound!

On Topic: I know this has been skirted around several times in this thread but, do folks really consider the Unofficial Patches (MCP and MPP) to be non-vanilla? I don't even really think of them as "mods" so much because that's not really what they are. Rather, both are intended to fix a lot that Beth left broken, and for that reason I consider them essential. But I don't think of these as non-vanilla, probably because I wasn't in the TES3 scene when it was new. I just don't understand the concept that a broken, unfinished game is more "vanilla" than a properly patched one. Any thoughts on that?

I would agree except for some of the changes you can make to game mechanics. Quick cast spells and a couple things like that.

Yes, but that's optional. You don't have to accept any of those changes if you don't like them. If you want only the bug fix items, you are free to do that. And it's made to be very easy for you to deselect those changes.

Maybe I'm old-fashioned but I like to think that words should have stable definitions. I believe that if we start bending the definition of words to suit our individual preferences we lose the ability to communicate through words.

Anything made by Bethesda is vanilla; anything not made by Bethesda is not vanilla. I don't see any advantage to trying to claim that user-made patches - or any mods - are vanilla. Pointing out that a mod is not vanilla does not diminish it in any way.

OK, fair enough... but to be clear, then all the official plugins from Beth count as "vanilla", right? LaFemm Armor, Master Index, Area-effect Arrows etc.?

This is basically me. I have some other, smaller mods, but those three are the ones I likely wouldn't play without.

Absolutely. They're Bethesda-produced content.

Interesting. So "vanilla" has only to do with name, and nothing to do with function. Terms like "added content", "bug fix", etc. don't figure into the equation. Thanks for clearing that up.

To the OP: sorry for the hijacking!

yes i still play vanilla. and i do mean vanilla i have two installations one has the expansions and the other is straight up vanilla off the disc from when the game launched and it has far more play time still even have save files from three pcs ago.

why you ask. well i love the vanilla version. i've tried modding and either have problems with the mods or dislike them. i love the vanilla textures. idk the vanilla version is my favorite game. the version with expansions being my second favorite.
