still playing vanilla?

Post » Sun May 05, 2013 2:12 pm

alright, i like playing mw mod-free. i even like to play the earliest morrowind when there's no enemies' health bar on it
maybe im sort of a purist or something.

i know for some people, especially in the age of skyrim and the upcoming TESO of today, seeing vanilla mw as downright butt-ugly kinda game,
outdatted graphic, ugly/weird character design and clumsy combat and what not.

so, i want to know how much of here player still playing vanilla up to this day, or who will try it next after running heavily modded mw
by vanilla i mean the official patches still okay, but unofficial patch is not.
and absolutely no mod at all whether its graphic overhaul or combat or anything else.

i intended this poll for pc version only, as there's (as far as i know) obviously no mods in console versions.

oh, and if any of you moderators happen to think that this should go to mod section or the others, please do move this to the appropriate

let the paper rolls...

I voted: no, (would you be so kind to give me your reasons below)

Reasons:
I've played vanilla MW for a long time and there was one thing which I disliked in vanilla from the start - the fog which prevents you to see far away. The fog which if you're on a small island close to Seyda Neen and take a look around, gives you a feeling that you're on a deserted island far from civilization and then when you go for a short swim, suddenly a new 'continent' arises in front of you. That's why I use MGE which is the only graphic mod that I use.

I use MPP because it corrects things, quests and spelling errors.
I use Animal Realism because as already said above, I've played vanilla MW for a long time and these days I want to focus more on exploration and scenery without need to fight every five meters. I prefer animals to be little more peaceful because some of my characters like to spend some time among them.

The only other mods which I use are Dark Brotherhood attack delayed, Slashes' Argonian Waterbreathing and Morrowind Stupidest Criminals.

the fog always gives me thrills of uncertainty and wondering what might come right from a point not far on the road ahead of me. that is to me the feeling of adventure. its interesting someone else has a different opinion about this.
yes, sometimes i want it too. and then i just use constant invisibility enchantment so the animals wont bother me at all
what's that?

Technically no.
I use one mod which removes cliffracers for obvious reasons.
Hail Saint Jiub! Slayer of the Winged Menace!
I don't care about graphics, clunky charcater design and animation one bit.
Combat still svcks, though.
The rest, official patches and some plugins and the expansions.

The name of the mod is a bit deceiving, in fact it's a mod that makes an approach to a crime more realistic, at least that's what I understand from a readme. I don't know much about it yet because I'm using it for the first time on my current character but obviously it changes how 'reporting a crime' is handled. It also changes applying bounties and makes it more realistic and region-dependent, hopefully.

I love mods - they have allowed me to craft my own personalised vision of what I think morrowind should be.
Regenerating magicka, lots of passive wildlife, adjustments that make it very hard to earn money, ones that get rid of all the ebony weapon spawns on golden saints etc, indoor weather sounds, illuminated windows at night time, longer draw distance with amazing textures and visuals [still with a lot of fog to retain the true morrowind vibe], a camping kit, a mod that allows enemies to chase you through doors, a mod that stops you from being able to wait and heal outside of doors to stop you 'cheating' your way through caves, a mod that expands the telvanni quest line massively, allowing you to actually do things as thwe archmage.

So yeah, I have modded the [censored] out of my game, and I love it. Would never go back to vanilla morrowind - I feel like I've developed a customised version of the game that retains the original atmosphere, yet improves upon it in all aspects.

Well, I mod all my TES games, because as said above, I see modding as customizing, to get a version of the game that appeals to me the most. In all of my games, I have graphic improvements, and I also like to download more clothes, weapons and armors, because variety is nice. I use MGSO for Morrowind, because I liked how it looked on the screenshots. Skyrim is the game that I have modded the most, Oblivion the least.

I mainly use fixes like mod which makes DB attacks tougher, balancing weapons, armor etc, and lot of gameplay mod like Healing, Django's dialogue, etc. But I also use MGSO not because I hate vanilla graphics but just to make them nicer overall.

And by the way, what mod does this?

PS :
Its on MMH --> http://mw.modhistory.com/download--11794

It's apart of one of BTBs morrowind improvements modules, can't remember exactly how it worked, but it did the trick

Yes, because the Xbox version is the only one I've ever played all the way through, so no mods. I use the PC version just to mess around and test/check out some mods.

I don't technically play vanilla, but I try my best to keep Morrowind in a vanilla-like state.

I use: Morrowind Graphics Extender XE, Morrowind Code Patch, Waterfalls Retexture, ATI Card Sun Fix, Better Dialogue Font, and the Delayed Dark Brotherhood Attack Add-On.

I'm very much enjoying my game with this selection of mods.

sound's close to skyrim's ways of treating a crime. which is, better than mw i think.
yes, i understand that console players are the exception for this kinda thread, but you said that you also have the pc version but you chose to stay with the console(and in this case. vanilla), so your vote is still valid.thank you sir.

Nah, I could never go back to vanilla. That being said, I don't use many mods that alter the gameplay. I don't like the likes of Combat Enhanced, etc.

I played a couple playthroughs with no mods. After installing MGSO I probably won't go back. I really like the graphics with it. Also I love downloading extra armors and weapons. As for actual content patches or anything really altering to the game, not really. Mostly just graphics and weapons/armor.

Yes. Not a fan of mods is all. Also, I think each TES game is a master piece that I don't want to tamper with.

This sums up my reasons for not playing vanilla, as well. My game is massively modded, and I've spent countless hours putting it together and getting it to run properly. It was a total pain at points, but it was well worth it.

I voted "No".

Why? Because modding allows me to do the following:

1. Tweak the game to be closer to what I consider balanced.

Because for me, merchants with 25 or 10 mercantile skills is not balanced. Weak and deadly traps being equally easy to disarm with a probe? Not balanced. Being forced to heavily abuse fortify spells and potions to self-enchant any slightly powerful magic items? Not within my definition of "balance". A claymore having the same reach as a dagger... Etc, etc.

2. Add more content.

I especially like dungeon crawling. Imagine my disappointment when I heard Arkngthand was pretty much one of the biggest dungeons I would encounter. I thought that was only a warm-up! So yeah, many dungeon mods for me.

3. Simply fix what is broken.

The Mercantile and the Unarmored bugs, the summoners around Ald Daedroth crashing my game. All fixed.

At this point, vanilla just wouldn't cut it for me. Although, when newcomers arrives in Vvardenfell and ask for mods, I still recommend they start with only the different patches, so they can get the vanilla experience, minus a few bugs and crashes.

Nope. Why would you choose 'less content' over 'more content'? Mods integrate pretty seamlessly into Morrowind, thanks to the text-based dialogue, and almost any modern PC can run them.

I wouldn't run the game without Accurate Attack. The combat mechanics in the early game really irritate me, to the point of losing my motivation to play the game. I could deal without texture replacers and other graphic upgrades, but not Accurate Attack.

1. i dont have a problem with that
2. arkngthand was intended to a part of the main quest, so to me it's appropriate that its bigger than most ruins in mw.
3. i never had that crash.

i'm the type of guy who can swallow everything they thrown at me.
what more can can i say. im a purist.

Sorry about the tone of my previous post. When it's about balance, I tend to be quite... passionate, for lack of a better word.
The funny thing is, after playing Morrowind for a while, I went and tried Daggerfall where I had a massive dose of dungeon crawling with mazes that could go on for hours. When I came back to Vvardenfell, my thoughts were along the lines of "Yeah, small dungeons are cool too." So nowadays, I mostly hunt for hidden and unique dungeon mods rather than just large ones.
As for the crash, it's actually fairly rare. I'm just one of the "lucky" few.
