Stop forcing me to join guilds! :(

Post » Tue Jun 12, 2012 11:14 am

The main quest isn't related to the Thieves Guild is it? but you do it anyway to get the stone... so you're a Dragonborn thief/assassin?

Next topic: Stop forcing me to do the main quest! :(

Well, along the MQ, you do get directed towards the TG. If you were a new player, it'd be easy to get svcked in. But there is a work around for that, you can just naturally come across Esbern rather than talking to Brynjolf. So why isn't there a workaround for this?

You aren't forced to do the Main Quest.

Maybe... Shout Faralda off the bridge (before she gives you the quest), then sneak off into the College? I haven't tried it myself, but who knows.

No need to, there's a back entrance. But the archmage's quarters are locked until the first College quest is completed.

Even worse with No Stone Unturned, you have to do the main quest in order to finish it, in addition to joining the various guilds. At least you don't have to join a guild to complete the main quest but Beth doesn't help with it's piss poor explaination of how to get from point A to Point B with Brynlof and the College of Winterhold. Only on the 2nd playthrough you'll see it as optional but not at the time.

Think of it as a con. You're joining the College under the pretense that you want to learn magic, but you're really just after its valuables. That will fit your character perfectly.
I agree with this.

Yeah it's stupid also it's even more stupid that the main quest is involved with the guilds too :/

That is incorrect. You can complete the main quest without joining any guild.

The College just redirects you to another area. If you go there initially you're just fine.

I've been playing my Khajiit Assassin/Thief character, and I recently started the "No Stone Unturned" quest (I think that's the name). Anyway, I was making my way through a list of the 24 stones/gems, and I suddenly see that one of the them is in the Arch-Mages Quarters in Winterhold. I am an ASSASSIN, and this quest if primarily a THIEVES GUILD quest. I use no magic and do not want to join a guild as it feels incredibly weird and stupid and doesn't fit into my character at all. I am not on PC and therefore there is no real fix to this.

Why do I have to join a guild that most people doing this quest don't want to join?
You only see the negative side of things, look at it like this: You will secretly join the college of Winterhold in hopes of obtaining that stone peice only. You are so determined to get that stone that you will go undercover as a mage to retreive it. Be the mind of your character, not your own.

and, for some reason people like you don't see the simple, yet, huge difference between in-game functionality and mind-play.

Why not pickpocket the archmage. He can be seen hanging around outside his quarters, without having to do any quests for the mage.

To me, it's a pretty clear sign that Bethesda intended one player to be able to do and see everything with one character. I'm more troubled that the College of Winterhold, apparently a prestigious institution, would accept anyone into their ranks. Even the most magically inept. But that's a whole other issue entirely.

I hate it when people say they are "FORCED" to join guilds... NO you are not!! Bethesda doesn't run up to your character and say OK YOU ARE MAGES GUILD NAO! You have to go out and join them yourself. It is your choice. If you don't want to join them, then you won't get the gem. It's that simple. The gems aren't all going to be on a silver platter waiting for you, you have to go out and get them. One of them is in the College of Winterhold. That's it. It is entirely up to you whether to join the guild or not. People who complain about being forced to join guilds just seem like whiners who want everything handed to them.

Of course we see it. I see the poor in-game functionality when I come across an Imperial patrol - and am told to "mind my own business" and that "it doesn't concern me" despite my position as Legate in the Imperial Army.

Or perhaps the Jarl of Riften greeting me as a traveller, wishing the road was well - despite my title as Thane of Riften.

Or maybe the repetition of a couple of lines by over a dozen shopkeepers - "Some may call this junk, me I call them treasures!"

It is painstakingly obvious, and the issue is clear. But roleplaying at least gives your character an excuse for being there, and personally would improve my game if I was in this situation.

No. It's a valid complaint at poor game design.
Quests from Faction X shouldn't be unsolvable unless you join Faction Y, especially in something marketed as an open world game.

This might be problematic...

I have this same quest, to get all of the Unusual Gems...

I 'may' have sold about 3 of them.. to random NPC's.

WAY TO GO BETHESDA. Yes, I blame you people. When I first ran into the damn things, I assume they were valuable, so I sold them. Little did I know, I needed to progress through a guild quest I didn't even know EXISTED, and turn them into some chick.

So now.. I have a question... Are there more than 24 of these gems or do they respawn?

lol, people complain about there being no consequences in the game, and then when there are some they go "OMG supposed to be open world!"

They're marked as quest objects, so you can't sell or even drop them.

That has nothing to do with consequences. Grasping at straws does you no favors.

Wrong. Bethesda had a poor placement for these valuable artifacts.

UNLESS you accept the quest which involves them, then they CAN be sold.

So basically.. I had to go to Riften to find out that it was for a quest.
Even though, through a COMPLETELY different questline, I found one in the College of Winterhold and sold it, assuming it was valuable, which IS a reasonable assumption.

So.. am I to assume that you're screwed if you DON'T go to Riften first??

Way to call this game a 'free-roam', bethesda...

It does tell you to find an appraiser for the Unusual Gems, so it does let you know it's important.

Ok smartie.

Explain to me how you CAN give away these unusual gems to inspectors, who will give you gold and/or information for them..

but NOT be able to sell or drop them.

Example: Go to Riften for the first time, talk to some shady guy, and he'll give you information on the Black-Briars in exchange for an Unusual Gem.

So again.. I'm SCREWED, thanks to Bethesda.
