Stop right there, criminal scum!

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 11:09 pm

Just a great thread! If I was ever a police officer, then I would only use these lines, none of that "right to remain silent" nonsense. Just good old, STOP RIGHT THERE... CRIMINAL SCUM! YOU SHOULD'VE PAID THE FINE!

"Mai'q took the calipers. Mai'q didn't pay the court fine or serve his sentence. Now he runs."

That was brilliant

I'm hoping that guards in between cities don't communicate so immediately. Perhaps it could take AT LEAST a few days to relay the information about you from town to town. Maybe even curriers carrying the news between towns could be killed or bribed preventing other towns from hearing of your crimes.

Here's an alternative: minor crimes (anything less than murder) stay within the relevant city, e.g. you could steal something in Bruma, but guards in Cheydinhal don't know and don't act on it. Obviously it'd take quite a lot of work to iron out all the difficulties, but it's a start. I like the idea of news travelling slowly, but bearing in mind that you have to take time to travel between cities, the current system isn't totally unreasonable.

And yeah, psychic guards need to go, and the dialogue ought to be improved. Some of the old classic lines should remain though, even if it's only an Easter egg.

Keep what the guards say from Oblivion and add more. It's not like our cops are any different:

FREEZE!

Ever since I played Oblivion if I ever go into someones house or a shop and accidentally knock something over I hesitate to pick it up for fear of a SWAT team coming through the door yelling "STOP RIGHT THERE CRIMINAL SCUM"

Daggerfall's Justice system would be perfect. You commit a crime and you are caught. You're then brought in court and you plead guilty or not guilty. If you plead not guilty, you have to either lie or debate why you are not the culprit. Factors influencing the result would be your speech skill and if you are in the Thieves Guild or the Dark Brotherhood. Because if your criminal guild likes you, they'll help you get out of there. :)

That system was awesome.

(Sounds like our kind of mod :P)

I love this.

I do hope that the Skyrim guards are a little less annoying than those in Oblivion.
Psychic powers and non-reigional boundaries kinda' svcked, especially for some very petty crimes.

Better start running!!

Oh... wait... every other guard in the whole world knows that you've stolen that spoon.
Running is never enough.

Best OB moment ever, guards chase me out of the Imperial City, I run into the fort with the Bandit/Maruader war, and use the controllable gates to lock him in.

I was so proud of myself. :celebration:

I don't even want an "alarm zone". Seriously. Here, it'll be easier if I simply list what I want when it comes to guards and crime.

What I do not want:

Guards automatically know about a crime committed within X feet of them.

Guards automatically know about a crime if ANYONE sees/hears you and are high in that NPC stat that controls their morality (do not remember the name).

What I want:

A line of sight/earshot mechanism applied to all NPCs. Maybe guards will be a little higher. For example, if you pull off murder quietly and unseen in a somewhat crowded cell, you should get away with it.

No "alarm zone".

Perhaps having inference capable AI, although that may be difficult. What I mean is if nobody sees you commit a crime does not mean you will get away with it. For example, if they see you walk into a room, and then walk in after you leave and see a dead body, they will report you.

Instead of guards automatically knowing about a crime if it is witnessed, the firsthand witnesses will automatically seek out a guard. Once they come close to a guard, your crime will have been reported. Any other NPCs they come into range with along the way will know of the crime, but will not actively seek out a guard. However, if they come into contact with a guard, you will be reported. Secondhands create thirdhand witnesses and they create witnesses of an even lesser degree. Depending on how many degrees away the witness is from firsthand affects the chance a guard will believe them. What this would accomplish is that even if you get caught, iyou are able to bribe/kill/otherwise neutralize the witness and not suffer the consequences your crime would have brought.

That's all I got so far.

I wonder if there will be hitmen that come after you if you betray a guild or become too notorious for city guards to stop you. Say, if you were caught committing murder in a Dark Brotherhood quest and was put in prison, sometimes when you choose to sleep to "due your time" you'll have a random encounter (like when you first met Lucien LaChance in TESIV) with another Brotherhood assassin coming to silence you so you won't compromise the Brotherhood. Or if you've committed a crime spree in a city, you'll be walking on a road in the wilderness several days later and you are attacked by archers from the treeline. Things like that would be nice.

Just some old Cyrodillic Guard in a lodge in skyrim in a rocking chair by the fire talking to himself "Stop right there Criminal scum .... We've got a psycopath on the loose...."

Make a quest out of it! Make a potion to cure the mad old Imperial Guard!

That's actually a really good idea. Have like the one guard that's really over the top for comic relief. Like Sheriff J.W. Pepper from Live and Let Die.

Have him be a guard from Imperial City but he lost his job and now he's an alcoholic and just hangs around the bar calling everyone criminal scum.

WIN

also i liked how in morrowind they called you an "Outlander" in such a derogatory way :P

I just want them to actually be strong, I slaughtered IC with my level 5 character on Oblivion without cheats or mods

...how? There are literally infinite of them :o

Fixed that for you.

That's the main reason I can't play Daggerfall - half the Fighters Guild Quests tell me to go to locked houses -.-'

The law system really should be redone. Daggerfall had it right but it took a lot of time.

I think that would be awesome, I hate how if you kill someone in their house behind like 4 closed doors in one shot, the guards know exactly what you did and come right away. And the Currier thing would be really cool too!

Hopefully they'll remove the fines and compensation for serious crimes.
So a man kills your brother in front of you. You run to the nearest guard in panic. The guard arrives on the scene.

You: It's him! He killed my brother, the bastard!
Murderer: Here, city guard. 1000 septims. Can I go now?
Guard: All right. Let's go to the castle and get this business sorted out.
You: :o

Ah Daggerfall... the chorus of slightly out of synch commands to "Halt!" brings back memories.

The system they have in Fallout new vegas is really good, stealing in front of people doesn't make them arrest you or attack you. They just shout at you, take away all stolen items and you loose some rating with that particular group or town. Of course if you do it too often they will begin to hate you for it.

One of the things i think we ought to see in Skyrim are reactions to crime.
For example,if u draw weapon in the city, guards and armed people should do it too as a response with some nasty remarks and threatings until you put the weapon away.
This is one of the things i saw in gothic and i really liked it.
