In-Store vs. Digital Download

Post » Mon Nov 28, 2011 8:01 pm

Throughout many posts I've read people always say they're going to retail stores to pick up Skyrim, while no one says they're
going to be buying online / digital download. However, the few times I have seen people say that they are / planning on
using the digital downloads for Skyrim (which I assume would be quicker than going to the store, coming back, downloading) its
always full of negativity for some reason.

I personally planned on just buying Skyrim off Steam and beginning the download at 12:00 (assuming thats when the game would
be unlocked).

I'm just curious as to why so many people are preferring to go in-person to get Skyrim rather than digital downloading. Is it
purely just because they want a physical copy of the game? I don't want to buy the game online for digital download, only
to find out that for some odd reason Skyrim won't be unlocked for hours later or something.

I'm prolly going for digital download via steam. You know you can download the game be4 the unlock time...the unlock time is just the time at which you can PLAY the game.

I think having a physical copy of the game is best, imagine if the site crashed or something and your game was lost... So many things can happen with purchasing online, I only purchase online when I cannot buy the game via retail.

It mainly depends on the person. Like me for instance, I can't stand digital downloads and have to have a physical copy. It's personal preference.

I'm still debating this myself: I loved pre-installing FONV and starting at the stroke of midnight... but as I look at my bookshelf there's a hole where that box should be.

I'll be curious to see other's responses.

Store bought version, prefereably the CE. I like to have something tangible for my money.

I think most of us are collectors at heart and not only want a physical copy of the game, but the high quality map that can be used in our adventures :)

Physical stores are the only way I go at this point for new stuff. 1. I like having a copy of the game and 2. I have seen time and time again people get screwed in some way be a DD site. Not to say they aren't good I use steam for a lot of older things and stuff like that. I have also started using OnLive and enjoy that a lot.

I'm fine with downloading almost any other game, but with TES, I just have to have a physical copy w/ map. I think it's just a nostalgic thing. :tes:

Having a physical copy of the game is better IMO, and the time it'll take to download the entire game (likely 9 gigs) you could easily have just gone to pick it up and be back before the DL is over, so it's faster to just get it regardless and not DL it.

Not to mention the pre order map, the game manual physical copy, and the other physical map with the game. You just get more. There are no plus sides to DL'ing it.

Both the Digital Version and the Retail version uses Steamworks. Or say otherwise, the retail version is not a real retail "offline" version. They both should require to be activated through Steam.

However if you have the retail box, you won't need to download the games files. Not everybody can or want to download big files. Also having a physical copy allows you to have a backup of the install files that will not occupy harddisk space. So you can easily reinstall the full game from the DVD if you need to for some reason, without the need to download the game again, or without being required to manually backup the install files on a media.

Personally I always prefer a real retail version to online DRM such as Steam. Once I've purchased a game, I really don't like to have to ask someone else permission to be able to play it, or each time I want to install it. I have also other concerns with digital versions about second and market and other stuff, but I don't want to discuss this anymore here ;)

I can't get good downstream rates from Steam. I used to, I can't anymore. No idea why. It would take a VERY long time to download.

In the past I'd have been contending with a downloads/uploads cap too (recently upgraded to one too high to realistically reach, so that's not an issue any more), and plenty of people still have to deal with very low such caps.

I'm not a fan of digital download. I like to have a physical copy with me. Besides, I don't like the idea of having to wait for the download, as well as wait for the installation, call me lazy/impatient.

Well I try to stay away from steam as much as I can, the fact AAA publishers such as Beth are using a 3rd party program (steam) as a DRM blows. Either stick with old DRM or make your own like EA did with origin but if its not your program I don't want it to be required to play your game.

Also that and lost an account a few years back never got it back so lost around $200 worth of games.

But ya mostly digital = safe but again thats mostly something could happen to your account like it being hacked ( been improved via hardware lock) as well as the game being download improperly either due to the network or personal Internet

Solid = disk which you will not need most likely after install and case and book and map if you pre-order. Disk can be scratched tho.

The time it will take to DL Skyrim at 12 will be longer than the 20 mins you'll wait in line after 12 to get the physical copy. There are literally no plus sides to DL'ing it over getting a hard copy. People who buy the physical copy will probably be playing before the online buyers.

I don't understand the logic of people wanting a physical object when a digital download is the same thing, except easier. Do these people still buy CD's or do they use iTunes? Same thing.

You can't use your Mercantilism skill online, but it can be useful when in person.

I buy disks then put them on Itunes that way I don't need to buy even more disks and download then reuplod to another disk to give out to others :D

Everyone's happy

I've had a few "bad" experiences with steam when unlocking or preloading a game. If you don't wish the play the game the night of release then going with steam isn't a issue at all. But for as fast as my system is, and 15/5mb fios internet it has taken steam much longer to unlock a game than it is for me to go to a store, buy it, and then install it. Not to mention that because you have to authenticate via steam whether you go digital or not, steam will always recognize that you own the game and let you download it via steam even if you lose the disc. So theres really nothing lost or gained either way except that you'll have a physical manual, and the preorder map.

Source..?
This happens with *most* games, not all games.

So unless you have a source from Steam of Bethesda saying you can do that for Skyrim, aka preDL it before november 11th, my statement stands true.

I don't understand why people are so narrowminded they can only see their way of doing things as the only 'logical' way.
