Storms batter the southeast U.S.

Yesterday storms battered the south, killing 234 people across six states. Tornadoes obliterated entire neighborhoods, ripping roofs off of houses and generally just destroying everything.

I live in south east Tennessee, and it was freaking insane. We have TON of trees down everywhere (I even saw the whole top of a tree at least a hundred feet away from the rest of the tree, just chillin' out in the middle of our local mall's parking lot). There are also over 100,000 people in my town alone without power, one estimate says that we may not have power again for two or three days. (Props to Books-A-Million for having power and wi-fi, not to mention good coffee)

And that's just where I live.

Alabama had it worse. A lot worse. Tornadoes ripped through Tuscaloosa and Birmingham Alabama, killing over a hundred people in the state.

Has anyone else been affected by these storms?

It's an awful, awful situation. I live in Southern Indiana and that region has had it bad, but nothing compared to this.

I wasn't aware how bad it was. I live outside of Atlanta and while we did have tornado watches yesterday and a pretty bad storm, it seems as though all was well.

Yeah, it wasn't as bad here as it was elsewhere, but we had at least two tornadoes in my area, maybe more.

The power outages are starting to get to me. :shocking:

That's terrible. :nope:

I saw on the news today that some tornadoes were passing through Jersey, too. Luckily, we've never had a serious natural disaster on Long Island in my lifetime.... *knock on wood*

I wasn't aware of it, either. Up here in Wisconsin, we haven't had many bad storms this year, and thankfully we don't get them like they do down south. It sounds so awful, and I'm so sorry to all of you who are in these storms. My prayers are with you. Stay safe.

Ya i'm already worried about family that's up north in Alabama and haven't heard from them. Very close to calling them to make sure they are alright.

I'm in Lisman Alabama(8 miles from the Alabama/Mississippi line, close to Meridian MS). My mom's boss lost her home and we had a tornado touch down 3 miles north of us.

No damage here luckily, I haven't been able to get in touch with my dad in Mississippi(also close to the line but pretty far away) though..

Northwest Florida, bout 10 min drive to the border, but we didn't get any storms here just some high wind. I saw the videos of the tornado in Tuscaloosa and it was huge.

We had tornadoes a week ago here in NC. More supposed to hit in a couple hours.

I think Mother Nature has been pissed off lately.

I think the count is at 30 tornados touched down last week.

Well, can't really blame her :D

Saw some footage on the news, terrible looking things those tornadoes. Even here there have been some exceptionaly powerful whirlwinds in the last summers, but nothing even close to that :cold:

Yeah, I have to agree that she has reason to be pissed. We haven't been very kind to her... :spotted owl:

I live in northern middle Tennessee and we've had two tornadoes hit us in the past four weeks (two weeks ago, I looked out a window and saw rain falling up), but nothing even remotely close to what hit Alabama. We've been really lucky here. A colleague of mine saw an eight minute long video of that mile wide monster tearing up everything it came across. It's just mind boggling what kinds of horrors Mother Nature can produce.

Make sure you take cover.

I think Mother Nature has been pissed off lately.

Maybe she's just bipolar.

I'm just outside Nashville and a tornado hit one of the roads nearby. Pretty scary time, glad it's over.

Yeah but we don't generally get bad storms here until June. So we still got time! :P

Anyways Alabama has been getting pounded this year. It's way above it's average for tornadoes. Already at 154 for this year, they usually get less than 120 for the entire year. Hopefully they don't see anymore but we still have 4 active months and 5 not so active but still have a chance to be active months left. And worse news yet, they get to deal with hurricanes as well.

Wow that's awful. The absolute worst we get up in western Washington are wind storms that might knock your power out if your unlucky. There was one particularly horrible ice storm that covered all the roads around my house in about an inch of pure ice. Literally suicide to try to walk on that stuff.

Kinda surprised Texas hasn't been getting pounded lately, though we are supposed to be under a tornado watch next week.

It's still freaking me out how I live in Central N.C. and all we got was the wind and the rain, and the rain was only really heavy for like an hour. No tornado warnings, just some quick watches. The only damage I've seen is a couple fallen trees.

This is a pretty big tragedy, though I live on Northwest Indiana, so I'm thankfully far away from all this. Whew.
