Spoiler
Ulfric Stormcloak is the Jarl of Windhelm and the one who assassinates the high king of Skyrim. They are consisted of mostly Nords, and they fervently oppose any Talos worship. Also I remember reading somewhere that they rely heavily on magic and ambushes because they can't take the legion head-on (seriously am blanking on where, someone else might remember though).

Here's a basic summary:

Spoiler
This guy called Ulfric Stormcloak "assasinated" the High King of Skyrim either prior to the opening of the game or during the start of the game. Either way, you find he has a claim to the throne and wants to split Skyrim from the Empire and make it independent. The Stormcloaks are the followers/believers in Ulfric who also wish to split from the Empire and will fight for him. They are made up of civilians, defected soldiers, former Blades, and other randoms, and are based in the city of Windhelm.

As for their attitudes and trustworthiness, it can't be determined - but it seems they are not evil people and may actually be the good guys of the game depending on how you see it, especially since the Empire is nothing like it was in Oblivion.

I just hope that none of the factions are like how they were in NV. NCR was clearly good (Overlooking some corruption) and the Legion were clearly a bunch of [censored]s. Personally, I'd like to join up with the Cloaks but I don't really feel like playing a good or evil character the first time 'round. Since everyone knows that the neutral badass is a very cool badass indeed.

The Stormcloaks need to sit, Tamriel is dealing with a greater ANTI-MEN Organization that is the Thalmoor who wouldnt blink at stabbing anything without Elvish blood in the Eye. the Imperials may have lied, spread BS, and generally step on the other races but atleast they brought peace and reletive security.

They kept the peace for a while. You know, until the heir died, the dragons came back, Morrowind got Argonianified, and the entire place generally went to [censored]. The Nords should have control of their own land before they get kajitified or something.

What are you trying to say! they weren't the cause off all that, don't blame the Imperials for the blundering of the rest of the Races ;0

True, but to be a font of power for the region and one thats supposed to keep order, their doing a pretty bad job. When a damned flying city is running around wreaking havoc and Titus Mede is confronted on the issue, the most he goes is "Meh. Not our problem", it shows you how much he really cares. His son is more empathetic, so who knows how the whole thing went down.

Regardless, all Kajiits should be questioned/possibly beaten at the border. Give them a taste of what will happen if they try to pull a Morrowind on us.

Titus Mede marched his army into the Imperial city declaring himself King. The Medes may still be in charge.

That's not entirely true. As per the book Lord of Souls
Spoiler
when Hammerfell and Highrock brutally attacked Orsinium the Imperial Legion defended the refugees on their way to Skyrim.

However considering it's revealed you walk in on
Spoiler
a public execution in Solitude
I don't know if any side will be portrayed as in the right.

I'm not saying they're evil. Just... underfunded. And just a little bit selfish. Or just scared. Can't blame them I guess, flying cities often tend to be a bit menacing.

Everything you need to know:

Spoiler
Ulfric Stormcloak is the leader of the Stormcloak rebellion and Jarl of Winterhold, voiced by the actor Vladimir Kulich who played http://www.englishisnotforsissies.org/buliwyf.jpg in "The 13th Warrior" and http://www.aceshowbiz.com/images/still/ironclad08.jpg in "Ironclad". He's apparently related to the High King of Skyrim who is assassinated at the start of the game and believes he has a claim to the throne. But as Nordic law dictates, he who kills the king becomes the new king. This is where the conflict arises. Those loyal to the old ways join the fight against Imperial rule. They want to seperate themselves from the Mede Empire based in Cyrodiil and establish their own independence.

Or it could be, as others have said, that Ulfric is the one who assassinates the High King. This would also make sense since the point of the war is a need for change. Skyrim was already governed by the Empire so Stormcloak may have killed him in an effort to usurp the throne. As far as I know, no one has specified.

If it means a free and independent Skyrim then they are good in my books. Also, if the king was pro-imperial then it makes sense to kill him.. however untactful it might seem.
