Is story/setting important?

Post » Fri Feb 18, 2011 9:02 pm

This is my first post though I've been watching the forum as a guest for about a month so...Hi everyone. Anyway...

One of the things that made me interested in brink was it's setting and back story. The game looks pretty unique and colourful for an fps and I've never seen anything like the Ark before. The idea of Instant/Deep Context, letting the environment tell the story is very interesting to me and it's not often that the question of "Who are the good guys and who are the bad guys?" is left so open. (In the games I play anyway.)

I'm wondering what you guys think of the setting and story. Do you think it really that original? Do you care about this kind of stuff or do you just want to play the game?

Here the developer diary about Instant/Deep Context, the story and setting, though you probably know this stuff already.

I love it - BRINK's the only game I know where the Multiplayer has plot. It's also unlike any other game in that you can play the role of the percieved enemy, showing you no one's the bad guy, and both factions are trying to do the right thing - it just happend to be mutually exclusive.

I would say story and setting are extremely important, because without the story or setting what are we really fighting for?

Its a refreshing change of pace from playing drab WW2 vietnam and especially all the desert levels from the recent wave of shooters. Most of the games these days take place in very drab war ravaged cities with an occasional jungle / snow level thrown in.
I think this game's artistic style is just another way that it has set itself apart from the pack.

I won't say it's TOTALLY original (you don't get total originality these days), but it's a novel enough base concept, and it's been done in a unique way.

I really love the plot, and the ambiguity of "Who's the hero? Who's the villain?" that they're filling the game with.

It's important to me but I do know some people who just go straight to multiplayer but since it's a seamless transition between the two it should be pretty interesting mix, I really hope they have not slacked on the story though I want to be immersed in the world.

I really like the story, i appreciate gray and grey morallity in games, i find it a little uninteresting when it's just a good vs evil, i prefer opposition of ideaologies rather than just the standard affair or good an evil.
and both sides seem well characterised enough to be appealing.

Well, actually the Call of Duty multiplayer is always backed by the singleplayer story. All the multiplayer-games are basicly battles which accompany the singleplayer-story.

^This. I played the Single-player campaign of MW and BlackOps and never played multiplayer ever.

Yes, story/setting is very, very important to me for the most part---I like to know what I am fighting for and why, too. ^_^

Daystar sighs heavily at the continuation of people bringing up Call of Duty where it's so, so unnecessary to. Hopefully, he pleads, hopefully when Brink comes out everyone will forget about it, swept up in the crashing waves of bliss.

Whether you like it or not, Call of Duty is THE game people will be measuring shooters up to. Especially new IPs like BRINK.

Annoying? Yes. Inaccurate? Yes. Will it keep happening anyways? Oh, yes.

story doesnt matter to me much... just the map and gameplay... if ill get to see more variety and maps and such, ill be more interested. Story... its always good vs evil... whichever team or faction im on, im always the good guy, they are always the bad. so its all good with me as long as parkour and the mesh of multiplayer and singleplayer lives up to its name.
