The other day I vaguely remembered a story that I heard when I was a kid (so yes I'm assuming it's a children's story)

I believe it to be a moral story about three brothers who happen to be woodsmen

There father (or some authority figure) tells them to go chop wood in the forest

The eldest brother gets the nice wine and food for when he takes his break and happens to meet some spirit or something or rather but does not share with it (I think the spirit makes him go poof into oblivion or something)

The second brother then goes into the forest to chop some wood and he has some decent food and he also refuses to share with the spirit thingy and also goes poof

The third brother goes into the forest and has crappy food because his other two brothers got the good food but he shares with spirit thing or whatever

Anyway that's all I remember can someone help me remember what this story is?

I remember reading that. We have the Grimms fairy tales book, and I used to just read story after story. All of them were very good.

I've heard the Norwegian version of that, and I know that the main character is the same as in many other Norwegian fairytales.

One thing to note though, almost all fairy tales are pretty much the same, but cultural concepts, names and the like are changed based on which country the story is being told in, so I've heard that tale, but I can't help you with a name because I only know the Norwegian version.
