Strange black line in rubble

Post » Wed Apr 01, 2015 3:40 pm

Hi All,

Just prepping a playthrough and installing various mods and texture packs and noticed a weird floating black line in a rubble pile at Springvale Elementary (it occurs in a few places around the school, not sure if the same pile exists elsewhere).

It looks to be part of the mesh or texture as it remains in the same place in the pile as you move around. I originally though it was part of a texture pack but I've removed all those and it still remains.

Has anyone encountered this or have any thoughts?

Cheers,

Edit:

I have tested with a vanilla install of Fallout 3 GOTY and it appears there as well, so looks to be part of the original game?

I've never noticed this before but, indeed, it is vanilla. The piece in question is meshes\architecture\urban\rubblepiles\rubblepile04.nif. I checked the archive for the 'Unofficial Patch' and although it replaces this particular mesh the new one would seem to have same fault...

Thanks for your input wetblanket, now that I've seen it I can't "unsee" the damn thing (sorry if I've caused you the same problem! )

I noticed in the Unofficial Patch change history there is a line that reads: "Fallout 3: Fixed missing stencil on rubble pile (Altered Mesh: rubblepile04.nif)." I wonder if this refers to the same issue and if in fact it was never actually fixed?

I also noticed the same line on the other side of the same pile, interestingly it occurs on the same "piece" of the rubble.

I'd have a go at fixing it if I knew how to do it :(

I'll see if anyone else has any ideas and then I may direct this to the Unofficial Patch team.

cheers,

Just a quick update - I've managed to fix this in my game. The issue appears to be in the metalworkquad01.dds texture file, and it exists in both the original Bethesda texture and NMC's texture pack (which I use). There is a black line to the side of the metal piece that shows the issue, I simply erased the line using paint.net and now all seem good, with no obvious issues. This may not be the correct fix (maybe it is the mesh somehow) but as it fixed my game I'm happy with the solution for now.

I won't upload the DDS publicly to respect the author of NMC, however if anyone wants it privately for your own game feel free to PM me.

Cheers,
