Strange Glitch

Post » Wed Apr 06, 2011 9:32 am

After finally getting Daggerfall running, I've had a good time with it. However, there were some odd occurrences upon approaching the coast. In any water found outdoors, I am unable to swim, and when I am close to water, moves such as strafing, backpedaling, and jumping become slow to the point of being impossible. <_<

While researching the problem, I found that these are all glitches associated with running on XP without DOSBox. The thing is, I am running on DOSBox, and these glitches are absent when I move away from water or when in a dungeon. Does anyone know if there is a fix? Is anyone even suffering from the same problem? I'm wondering if I did something wrong during installation (I used the alternate guide, if that has any sort of relation to the problem at hand).

If not, I suppose the problem is nothing more than an annoyance, but I'd be sad argonian indeed to stray from the shores.

I think I experienced a similar problem recently. I went to a coast and actually jumped a ways into the water only to find myself essentially stuck. To get out I had to keep trying to run and jump. I'm also running DOSBox.

That is exactly what happens if I jump into water. Experience any slowdowns? Makes it extremely difficult to get out. At least the game is in a playable state. Best wishes.

Well, that's swimming outdoors in Daggerfall for you :) Or it's rather that movement that you do when water's height is about half of yours (when the watter is shallow enough to allow you to walk, but slows you down)

Just run and jump out of the water :), swimming outdoors won't get any better than than

Yeah, outdoor water in Daggerfall is a major ripoff. It's all just giant puddles (including the ocean) and you move at a snail's pace whilst in it. Dungeon water is much better, aside from the fact that it's always full of...things...that are trying to eat you! :ahhh:

Learned that lesson from my first quest. Slaughterfish and Dreugh have a much harder bite (and claw) than their Vvardenfell counterparts. :ahhh:

Not to mention they scare the living out of me the first time I meet them. And the movement in the water make the PC a sitting duck.

Want to be scared? Break a soulgem that has a slaughterfish in it. Then run around a town with a rabid slaughterfish chasing you

If you have even a slight magic ability you should be able to cast water walking, which causes you to essentially move at a almost normal speed through the water.

And by "slight" we mean you didn't build a custom class that expressly disallows casting magic at all. ANY character can cast buoyancy, and even non-members can buy it from the spell seller at the Mages Guild.

Very very tempting.......

Ya, I found that out the hard way after exploring a dungeon with water. I rememeber saving before and after I get from point A to point B underwater until I could not take it any more and look at some tip in some of some sites, which they suggest using magic. <_<

I remember attempting to make solely physical characters unable to use magic before, and unless it's reeeeally what you want to do, I wouldn't advice it. Things like recall and heal are practically required to get through the game.

I find Levitate to be much more essential in Daggerfall than any other spell.

Indeed. Climbing is fun, but doesn't let you travel diagonally/horizontally. Plus the stupid XnGine doesn't let you look fully downward or upward, not allowing you to see just how deep that pit in the dungeon you're exploring is. Levitation is quite handy for such encounters.

Oh, and two words. Levitating. Horse. :goodjob:

Just thought I'd add this here...

I've had trouble trying to swim everywhere... especially outside its just dodgy, got out by jumping repeatedly.

As for inside water, I just this second figured it out. I cant swim up with the mouse, nor with the buttons FLOAT UP or FLOAT DOWN. But if you hold FLOAT UP FLOAT DOWN together, your character will float. Is this how you do it anyway?

Hopefully LuciusDXL can correct the small things like this in DaggerXL
