Strange things in the desert : Fallout: New Vegas

I was fooling around comparing this http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Mojave_Wasteland from the wiki with google maps and found something wierd where the Fallout map says NCRCF, http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&ie=UTF8&ll=35.633407,-115.260015&spn=0.007988,0.01929&t=h&z=16. strange huh?

Though I don't think the Fallout map from the wiki is legit, I still cant figure out what the blood colored thing is in the desert

Kinda looks like fire retardant, like for wildfires. Strange whatever it is, doesn't look natural, and I cant think of anything that would rust like that.

Could be allot of things; mineral deposit, red smoke grenades, distortion of light, data corruption, or something on the cameras’ lens. Prob one of the last three.

Given that that Nellis is the farthest north the game map goes i doubt it.

As for the brown spot on Google maps it's probably a coffee stain on the scanned prints or a compression artifact, however that area is most likely in NV.
