strangest CTD...

Hi friends:

So, I'm having a strange occurance. No matter where - (IC, interior, exterior, wilderness, inn, cave) or how - (active playing (at different timescales), wait through, or fast travel through) my game gives me a CTD on day 30 of the play calendar, precisely at 5:00AM.


I've tried all the above options, I've tried deactivating all my (quest-related) mods - (left FCOM and texture replaces active, because I can't see how they have anything to do with time.)

I have loaded a 5-day old save and waited until day 30... crash at 5am. No luck.

I tried taking out the timely godrays from my shaderlist.txt (OBGEv2.2). Thought that might be the culprit, no luck.


Nothing I can think of will let my character go past 5am. If I wait or fast-travel some hours - landing anywhere past 5am will go through the loading screen, show me the game view for 2 seconds, and CTD.


It's quite bizarre. Any ideas? I have two characters, one is level 35 and in the Shivering Isles... he's fine, but I felt like starting new a week ago and this is occuring with my new character.

UL - Dark Forest had a bug that could lead to CTD (at 5:00 AM IIRC). It got fixed in the latest version, so replace the one you have with v 1.0.4.

Thanks for the quick replies. I'll give that a try. I've been using the compilation .omod for UL, so I'm a little behind on updates. I'll let you know how it turns out.

Well, that's kind of messy.
I think I'm suffering from this as well...
The ULOmod was updated on the 24, where the Dark Forest was on the 19th.
The first doesn't not include the latter though.

Well, I updated Dark Forest... no dice. Still crashes at 5am. Both my "main" savegame, and my oldest one (day 25, wait 5 days) are still crashing at 5AM.

Any other ideas?

(heading to bed now, will check back in.... crap. 4 hours. this silly game does terrible things to my sleep schedule.)

I've seen the Cobl version of Salmo The Baker fingered as a culprit in these kind of crashes before.

Try disabling Cobl?

I have no idea,just what I've picked up on the forums, and from the Cobl readme. I've never had any problem with Salmo the Baker, either the original or the version included in Cobl.

One other possibility is Verona House Bloodlines. I see it is in the OP's load order. The only time I ever had a time specific crash was when I was playing through this mod. I disabled it and the crash went away, then re enabled it and it played fine. I can't specifically say that my crash was caused by VHB but it was certainly prime supect for me.

The fact that it's at 5am really seems like UL - Dark Forest.

Maybe try just deactivating the Dark Forest esp, see if that works for you, and if it does, do a clean save before upgrading?

It's possible you may need to do a clean save to remove Dark Forest data from your save game.

Certainly not always. Many (of Duke Patrick's) combat related mods have to load after the bashed patch (last).

I've never used xuldarkforest so no idea about if it is problematic in itself, but it exposed a problem with the first release of Shining Creatures. xuldarkforest enables/disables Will-o-the-wisp like creatures regularly - and it turned out that the Shining Will-o-the-wisps crashed the game when disabled. Fixed in the update, which requires OBSE. See sig for download link. Sorry for the inconvenience of having to hunt down the issue.

Dark Forest by itself was only problematic because the scripts controlling the wisp-like creatures was unrestrained. It would enable/disable its targets as often as the game would let it. Usually that doesn't cause crashes, but it does lead to performance issues if you happen to be nearby while it's going on.

Quite interesting though, turns out that calling "IsRunning" in the same frame as disabling the creatures with the shining script causes crashes. I don't know if that applies to all situations but it was certainly odd. Anyway, the updated version of SC fixes the issue, even without the updated xulDarkForest, but make sure to get both anyway! Sorry for the hassle, and I'm glad you've sorted it out! :)

Edit: Oh and Arkgnt, have you had any thought on the storm atronachs, and golumns etc for Shining Creatures? If you want, now that it's using OBSE I can try and figure out a way to make the whole mod all-in-one and configurable by ini?

Shining Creatures is definitely not the only thing that could cause crashes when using versions of xulDarkForest prior to the current one. I was getting 5am crashes before doing a clean save and updating Dark Forest, but I had never used Shining Creatures. (Although, now that I look at it, I think I will use Shining Creatures . . . pretty!)

I'm busy playing Fallout 3 so I haven't even loaded Oblivion in quite a while, but ini configuration sounds neat. Pretty sure I'll get the Oblivion itch rather soon - I'd like to check out Phitt's Artifacts for one thing.

It's happening again, now precisely at 12:00am changing from day 34 to day 35.

Interior cells, exterior, or waiting or traveling. I tried disabling some things (dark forest, shining creatures, ren's guards, windfall... ) but so far nothing.

Uninstalled all my quest mods, all of unique landscapes, left all of FCOM running (to save time) and disabled all the patches for the things I'd already uninstalled.

Clean saved...

Still crashing right at 12:00am.

Tried a day old save, clean saved, and waited... Still crashing at 12:00am from day 34 to day 35.



Time to reinstall the game? Grrr....Wish I knew what caused it...
