Streamlining TES, or maximizing Skyrim

Post » Thu Aug 11, 2011 11:01 am

Streamlining is not always a bad thing if you are talking about actually making things less complicated but not less difficult. But, If you are talking about the "streamlining" that took place in Dragon Age 2 (cutting content because of only 8 months of development time) then it would ruin Skyrim.

Yup. Streamlining is about removing unnecessary systemic complexity while maintaining the basic function or desired outcome. Streamlined does not mean less skills. Nor does not mean less depth of character definition. It also does not mean scrapping simple guiding systems (such as attributes) in favor of spreading the guiding values into a hodgepodge of unlinked items.

Doing something thing like that is the exact opposite of streamlining and seems to be exactly what Beth has done.

I don't understand. Before the features confirmed in Skyrim were confirmed, I never heard anyone say the series is "too spreadsheety", needed to lose attributes, needed one-piece suits of armor, or any of these others things being defended. Then, Todd Howard says something and Skyrim is confirmed to have these things and the forums are suddenly ruled by a majority of people fully supporting (not shrugging them off and trying to adjust, but literally supporting) all these features and specifically utilizing Todd Howard's specific diction.

So you WOULDN'T expect new people to migrate to a forum about a new game shortly before that game is released? You're also surprised that they are excited about the new game?

It makes perfect sense to me that when a new sequel to a beloved franchise is about to release, the forum would be highly populated with those that are excited about the release. Not everyone comes onto the forums just to complain to nobody ya know...

Anyways Skyrim will surely be interesting, no matter what label you put onto it. Bethesda has had good success with the Fallout series since Oblivion (shudder) and I think it had given them a better, more mature outlook on the development of these games.

Oh I forgot another wild theory around here.

"They're betraying us, they're just doing what is popular instead of what they want, just for the money."

Thing is if this is true, THEY'RE DOING IT WRONG!

Yup. Streamlining is about removing unnecessary systemic complexity while maintaining the basic function or desired outcome. Streamlined does not mean less skills. It precisely means less skills, the removed skills will be under other skills.

And attributes have also been merged into the skills, because they always did the exact same things anyway.
Why would you need 3 numbers to define one thing?

Why would you need 3 numbers to define one thing?

Because you have (at least) three things that contribute to that thing.

Do you know the difference between ability, talent and skill? Are you even aware of the fact that those are different things?

Are you able to hit a baseball? Do you have talent for hitting a baseball? Are you skilled at hitting a baseball?

Do you understand that those really are three different questions, pertaining to three different things, even though each one centers around hitting a baseball?

What is with these topics? When something never changes (like cod) people complain. But whenever something does change (skyrim) people still complain. After everyone complained about oblivion, I would have thought that all the new stuff (and old stuff) that their bringing to skyrim would be enough. But alas, we must always have something insignificant to complain about.

Call of Duty did change. Go play CoD 2 if you don't believe me.

These topics will not die until "people" like you acknowledge that there are different opinions in the world, and those who disagree with you aren't just idiots.

Personally, after people complained so much about Oblivion, the LAST thing I thought Beth would do is eliminate more content.

I sincerely have absolutely no idea what led them to a line of reasoning like, "Okay.... people complained because Oblivion had fewer skills, so Skyrim should have............. fewer skills!"
