Strongholds and forts for players

Post » Wed May 18, 2011 9:03 pm

Remember in Morrowind how you got strongholds when you completed the quests in the Great houses. Well why not make it the same in Skyrim. There are clans and lords in Skyrim which bare similarities to Morrowind's political system. If you complete quests for the clans or lords you are granted land and you will have to find and hire workers and get a hold of building materials. Or you can go to an already owned Fort and kill the inhabiting lord and his servants.

I think it would be a fun idea.

Yes! I'd very much like this!

Just a few questions about the poll though:

1. What is the difference between "Yes" and "Absolutely" in this regard...?
2. Could you add the answer for the 2nd question "By building them yourself, or by help of others"? I'm referring to how you could do that in Morrowind :P

I think it's a great idea. Rather than completing a questline and being told "Oh thanks for saving the world, here's some gold" I'd like "By the way, while you were saving the world we built you a house! Hope you like it." Morrowind did it really well and to an extent, so did Oblivion. (Battlehorn Castle).

The Absolutely was just for kicks, and im only referring the clan part to Morrowind the other ways are just to add a bit of realism and different options.

Absolutely! It would be neat to own a fortress of your own when you gain enough power in a guild.

I like the sound of taking control of strongholds by killing the occupants. I also like the sound of being rewarded property and land as you progress with certain factions / guilds.

Not so keen on the idea of buying them or getting them by completing the main questline though.

I would love to see the return of strongholds. Of the options, though, I think acquiring them through Lords or clans is the only one that makes sense. The land of Skyrim is divided up among the various clans or Holds (unless there's a no-mans land somewhere) and no Lord in their right mind would ever allow anyone to build a stronghold on their land without their express permission. That's just asking for trouble to allow otherwise.

No. They are too big, too empty and they are useless.

I ABSOLUTELY think this would be a great addition to the game. I think that through lords and clans makes the most sense; This allows the guilds to be separate and immerses you more into the political and social structure of Skyrim. I just think it'd be awesome to go to dinner parties with other lords, have rivals, raid eachothers forts. Have a kid named romeo who sneaks around with my arch enemies daughter. Upgrade my stronghold to be filled with all manners of opulence, but still be secure from burglars and enemy attacks/ possibly even dragons. And i want to gain the loyalty of my citizens.

I know it's a lot, but I could see TES adding some of these things in future games. All I can say is it would be welcomed gladly by me, as long as it was an addition to the game, not a complete shift in gameplay style.

I want it like Morrowind with a choice in placement and a slight ability at growth, with mines to mine and bring in money, enemies that attack it periodically, but never be able to actually take it lol, more for the visual aspect of such a thing, land to cultivate into gardens, and animals to herd, and all the guards I want to buy to guard it, and slaves to mine and garden and herd for me.

I proposed something akin to this in an earlier thread, essentially advocating that forts and citadels such as the warlock tower of Frostcrag Spire, and ghe warrior fortress of Battlehorn, be included in the core game as available quewst rewards for players. . . I was given a bit of a hard time for being a DLC hater, which isn't actually so, but what I was really asking was for soemthing like what you are saying, that the basic game include forteresses and enchanted towers that players can gain through sidequests. Needless to say, I entirely support the notion, and hope to see these things in the game upon release.

I kinda like the idea, similar to mount and blade where if you fought out the current occupants of a castle/fort then the king you worked for would reward you with it... It shouldnt be an easy task though, I think you should have to work at capturing it

i want it to be a reward for one reason from the main quest line. so the player cant have like 12 sanctuaries. im fine with one maybe two or three but when you can take over any and all holds you get to be too dominate in the world

I never visited my houses in Oblivion, even after buying them all. I was always Recalling back to Rethan Manor and Indarys Manor. It wasn't really the houses' fault, but developer oversights:

-Fast travel directly to the homes in Oblivion wasn't available, so you always had to go to the town entrance and then walk for a while to your place. At least in Morrowind, Mark/Recall took me there immediately, and I got away with intervention spells.

-There was simply too few unique items in Oblivion. Morrowind was littered with unique items that made it worth collecting and showcasing.

-Lighting in Oblivion houses was too dark for my taste, and enchanted items had no glow on them in Oblivion. I loved walking into Rethan Manor and seeing tons of glowing enchanted weapons and armors sitting on the tables.

-There's something satisfying about have a mini town dedicated to you. Buying a manor didn't give that impression.

If they do go back to the stronghold-style housing, more customization would be cool. Even simple decisions about the number of houses, walls, gardens and their locations would be nice. I know, it's almost certainly not happening unless modded in. Racks like the ones holding the Crusader Relics would be welcome too for storing weapons and armor in fixed locations.

Adding to what Buescherman was saying:

- Battlehorn Castle, Priory of the Nine, and the Great House Strongholds were distinctive because I had servants/guards/knights.
- Frostcraig Spire, and many of the homes in Oblivion, felt very empty in contrast. The Spire was badass looking and offered valuable services, but I would've preferred it to be closer to civilization

I'd like to have a small motte and bailey with a small village springing up around it -- sort of like Ravenrock from the Bloodmoon expansion to Morrowind.

to get a fort we should need luck, perseverance and money and a bunch of other challenges. and this fort should give us a bunch of real advantages
