Structures & Architecture.

Post » Tue Apr 06, 2010 11:33 pm

As we all know, we have seen architecture of Skyrim In Bruma and in Solstheim, but if we get to see every structure in Skyrim to have the same architecture, It would become repetetive.

I'd like some structures with a little fantasy feeling like this: http://gamernode.com/upload/manager///News%20Images/Industry/dragon_age_ostagar1258681456.jpg

Anyone feel me?

Todd Howard said post Oblivion that Oblivion's art style was really inspired by LOTR. BGS really wanted to go for an authentic medieval feel with elements of high fantasy from TES.

Hopefully they're past that phase.

That would be nice for a capital or ancient ruins, but I wouldn't want to see every city looking quite that grand...especially not in Skyrim. I don't see Nords as building huge architectural masterpieces. They do have that one big castle...Winterhold I think?...but it would probably be more simplistic than that IMO

If they wanted to go for an authentic Medieval feel, then I'd say they did a poor job on it. If they think that's an authentic Medieval feel, then I guess the designers learned Medieval history from Dungeons and Dragons.

But I think we can safely assume that not every city in Skyrim is going to look like Bruma. Even in Oblivion, for all the criticisms of looking generic directed at it, each city still used different archetecture. I somehow doubt Bethesda would suddenly make every single city look the same in the game. Though I wouldn't be surprised if we see some archetecture resembling Bruma or maybe something like the Skaal buildings in Bloodmoon, seeing as these are supposed to be representative of Nordic styles.

I do hope for some more creative archetectural designs in Skyrim than Oblivion offered, though, now, I don't expect every place to look like a Telvanni city, of course, because I really can't see Nords living in giant mushrooms, the archetecture of the game should fit with the environment and culture, but I do hope Bethesda gets a bit more creative when designing the places and styles. I don't WANT an "authentic Medieval feel with elements of high fantasy", I want fantasy. If I want an authentic Medieval setting, I'd go play an actual historical game.

Well the norse archecture is pretty fantastical, with all the carvings and such, if they put in the effort for detail. Perhaps you'd see some russian elements too, for the castles.

I figure most towns and outposts will have mainly wooden buildings, like in Solstheim.

The woodies were ok for games outside Skyrim, but now we're destined for the Bearded-North, so architecture needed to develop. The trailer mural was spotted with Petra-esque construction. I'm optimistic, for some of http://news.blog.gustavus.edu/files/2010/01/Machu-Picchu.jpg and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prambanan. No tourists, or course.

Lots of gloomy temples, filled with chanting and smoke, mingled with screams of orgism and sacrifice. Widows upon the wedding pyres of their daughters, while hunched priests collect the alms according to caste. Ysgrimskalds, possessed by the voices of the Hoary Host, prattle their songs for beer and drugs. Hell yeah.

Do as in Morrowind. Really varied and unique architecture in Skyrim for different places. Oblivion's architecture was unique and varied, yes. But not as much as it should have been, I think.
In Morrowind it was really varied... from Hlaalu to Telvanni. It must be lore friendly though of course...

I'd hope for some snow or ice structures. A camp of nomads with snow shelters would be cool
