With a new character I touched ctrl to have him sneak, but I can't get him out of sneak. EVER! Have had this problem a few times with other characters, but hitting ctrl
a couple of times seems to fix it. I go to another character and there is no problem.
Any suggestions appreciated. (Fortunately, he is at Level 8, not 58!)

Well, sit somewhere and it should fix the problem. Maybe you should remap the sneak key; maybe your ctrl key doesn't respond correctly?

I thing a workbench, grindstone, smelter works too.

As far as I remember when the last time I played any activity that changes you into third person view should fix the issue.
The issue likely happened when mining for ore while in sneak mode. Since mining makes you stand up and then the script has issues putting you back into proper sneak mode. Sometimes just tapping sneak a few times works but sometimes that does not.
