Stuck

Post » Thu Dec 24, 2009 8:19 am

Okay, I'm stuck on what skills to tag for FO2.

If want three of these: Lockpick, Steal, Big Guns, Small Guns, Science

But I can't decide which... I know I can have em all maxed eventually, but what do I tag? I want science so I can get a certain good ally or two, and Big Guns because I love...well, big guns. What should I pick?

Well the good news is that there really isn't any "bad" way to decide on tag skills - I've found regardless of what you pick, you're going to wish you had picked something else at some point in the game. You patently can't do everything in the game in one playthrough, so your enjoyment is going to be fuller if you just accept that you're going to miss out on some things depending on the character you build.

My advice, however: the thing to keep in mind with tag skills is what skills you want to raise about 100. Because not all of them have any real advantages once you pass that point with them. (ie, with Science there's only one instance I know of off-hand where it pays off to have it past 100, and even then I think you only need to go to 125 or so.)

So certainly one of the weapon skills - one thing to think of is that you might want to narrow your weapon selection down to one class of weapons as your primary offense - others you can play with, but don't necessarily need it all the way up. If you want to go Big Guns, and plan on raising that very high, then that's certainly one. But on the other hand only focusing on that will make the early parts of the game a bit harder.

My advice would be to really nail down what sort of character you want to play. If you plan on doing a lot of sneaking around - lockpicking and stealing from people, then maybe Big Guns isn't necessarily a good fit for a sneaky-type of character (though it could be an interesting build to play with.) Those thief-type skills pay off more if you really rely on them to guide you through the game - if you plan on letting your guns do the talking for you as opposed to sneaking past your opposition, then you likely don't really need to tag the sneaky skills.

And don't forget you can still raise up many of your non-tag skills to a decent level throughout the game. If you plan on focusing mostly on combat with Big Guns and such, then you don't need to tag stealing and lockpick, and can just raise those up the normal way.

One strategy I'll use a lot in the original Fallouts is starting out trying to get my Tag skills to around 100 (which doesn't take all that long when you get 2 points for the price of one) after that you're doing pretty well in those skills, so it opens you up to generalizing a bit more and raising up some of your other skills that you want to play around with.

Long post I know, for a simple question, but I hope you find some of that helpful. The one thing to keep in mind is that you are going to wish you had tagged more skills later on. (And eventually you will get to pick another Tag as a Perk on level-up, so keep that in mind, too.)

Thanks! Big help. I want to be a good, non-slaver character so I can get the deathclaw ally, Sulik, and Marcus, but I also want Steal and Lockpick as tags... can I steal and stuff and still be good? (I plan to do kind things, but steal to survive)

Yes, you can steal and be "good", as long as you dont get caught.
There is no magic penalty for stealing. IF/WHEN you get caught, the "victim" will attack you.

No, whether or not you get caught you lose Karma is what he was asking.

But the karma loss is so insignificant it won't matter.

Right, cool. Stealing is one of my tags then :D I think I'll drop big guns and choose Small Guns instead. Now, for my third, I think I'll pick...speech. Was useful last time I played. As for SPECIAL, how should I go? This is what I'm thinking...

Small Frame
Gifted

STR: 7
PER: 8
END: 5
CHA: 5
INT: 8
AGI: 10
LUC: 5

Look good?

That looks good. But would you like to get more and more successful in combat as you level up in the game? If you add one more point into Luck and deduct from, let's say Charisma or even Agility, you can benefit from perks like More Criticals, Better Criticals and Bonus Ranged Damage. Combined with Targeted Shots your enemies will drop a lot faster, and if you eventually get the Sniper perk everything is as good as dead, except when the toughest enemies are lucky and critical you with a Gauss pistol in the face, like the Enclave, or a Deathclaw family surrounding you.

That looks like a good build yes.

Strength can be raised by 5 points in game if im not mistaken, 1 with a module, and 4 with power armour, so there is really no reason to go above 6 to be fair.

Remember with your current charisma you will only be able to have 2 companions, unless you tag the personality trait skill. A higher charisma will also help you with speech and convincing others to do things your way.

Steal is kind of a useless skill as all you have to do is save before stealing from somebody and it usually works 50% of the time. Also there is no karma drop for stealing.

Usually the 'best' combination is small arms, speech and lockpick. Small arms are spread evenly and plentifully through the game, speech lets you 'pwn' with the games awesome dialogue, and lockpick as there are generally many locked doors in the game.

If you tag big guns you will probably strugle at the start of the game, as they are to find and generally very expensive. And as nu clear day said, you will not be able to do all in the game in one build, and this is what adds to the replayability value.

The STR is a bit too much, with the memory module and power armor, you'd go above 10. You can drop some STR and use the points to increase CHA if you're in the mood for more followers. Don't go below 5 though, unless you intend to go for Power armor at the very start.
Otherwise, pump the points into LCK. 10 AGI is a good thing for sequence and AP, but you might want to take a point off and give LCK an additional boost.
Also, there are 4 memory modules - STR and CHA I'm certain of, but the other 2 don't quite recall. One perhaps was INT. And, of course, a +2 LCK from NCR.

But nevertheless, a good starting choice ;)

Yep, Intelligence and I think the last one was perception.

Cool thanks everyone! Btw I am hopelessly addicted to FO2 now :D I love oldschool RPGs :P probably gonna buy Baldurs Gate soon, maybe look around for Planescape Torment.

Here's my new build:

STR 5
PER 8
END 5
CHA 5
INT 8
AGI 10
LUC 7

Btw I plan to pick the personality perk rather than spending a crap load of points in CHA. I mean, after all, you can take it at an early level.
Oh, another question. Is joining the Wright family justifiable for a good character? Will it lower my karma or anything?

Thats a lot of perception you have there. Are you after good ranged attacks?

Its a good build, but remember Charisma also affects things such as barter prices, initial NPC responses to you, dialogue options, seduction, speech checks and so on...

And yes, the Wright Family is the ONLY family a good character can join. It doesn't lower your Karma, not as far as I know anyway.

There is a pair in trapper town, to the north, in the 'shopping mall' which is loked off due to rats, in a locker.

There is also a pair in the toxic caves themselves, although you have to cross a pool of goo to get it, which can have adverse side effects.

Oh, you meant you couldn't find trapper town? Its on the green grid to the south-west of Klamath. Trapper town is actually the second map of Klamath, just in case you are wondering. There are like 3 trappers around a burning refuse barrel in the middle of the map, and an old highwayman to the north.

Its not a separate town.

Do you mean "Trapping Grounds"? Cuz all I found there was some geckos. When I enter Klamath I have the options "Downtown" and "Trapping Grounds". And of course theres the spot with the crashed vertibird and dead enclave.

Well in my opinion your character is good...but my advice is to pass the game with all combination's regarding skills and Specials.

I passed the game over and over using different skills/specials...and the game always surprised me...giving me that special feeling with each character I played....now at the end of my 10 year campaign in Fallout 2....the most fun I had was picking up ...Sulik...Vic...Cassidy...Lenny and Myron....suit us all up with Combat Leather Jacket...give them all .44 Magnum (Speed Load) with .44 Magnum FMJ .... Lenny is only useful with a Sniper Rifle.
Well anyway I cleared all the map except the enclave ...those plasma turrets and rifles are a bit too strong for Combat Leather Jacket...

This was the most fun I ever had all dressed up in black and killing everything in our way using magnum and shotgun...(2 barrel)
No cheats...I never cheat...

Trust me this game will infect you...screaming for more...

No, I mean Trapper Town.

Its located to the west of the grid for Trapping Grounds, and South of the grid for the crashed vertibird.

I don't have that option in my Klamath overmap. Its just trapping grounds and downtown. I've checked the grounds and the vertibird canyon and there isnt an exit grid for trapper town.

Nevermind, found it. Thanks!
