Stuck with the 10 races?

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 9:38 am

As I am too poor to afford a computer with a decent video card and am already rubbish at PC gaming, I use an Xbox 360. This eliminates the possibility of mods... :( Unless Microsoft finally get their A into G.
As there are the Kahjit I was always secretly hoping for the possibility of a canine character, I do understand that there is a long history behind every race and this is mostly a waste of time but I am very much disheartened when I don't really feel that attached to my character. Is it absolutely impossible that there could be a canine race?

no canine.. u can be a cat if you want...

n ya theres a whole thing about how you'll need a pc for mods to make not play. so yes consoles will be able to play mods though how isnt exactly known as psn and xbl are both known very well for charging 100x the cost to store the actual data.

if we're lucky we may(and i stress the may part) have werewolves/werebears so it's kind of a "canine" race.

Quite apart from breaking existing lore, the problem with adding races is where do you stop?

You want a canine race, someone else wants dremora. Then someone asks for daedric seducers, then you put the Akaviri races in. See you where I'm going? No matter how many you add, somebody will always want something else.

No. I think 10 is plenty, far more than any other RPG out there, and so long as Bethesda make them more unique - which they have said they will - then I think that ten is fine.

You're pretty much correct in my opinion, however wouldn't you agree that Feline goes parallel to Canine. Yes I'm pushing it but it just does seem kinda one sided, ask anyone and they'll say that cat is opposite to dog...

Are you implying that every khajiit player is a furry?... and also if that is a question the answer is no.

Stuck with 10 races? imo it's pretty much and I'd have a hard time making them unique and still balanced, as did bethesda too. More races would only make things even harder. 10 is perfect. (I don't count vampirism, werewolf, lich etc as races)

"Stuck" was never intended to be derogative of the ten race system, simply and rather selfishly I just want another

Okay? How is that a bad thing? just keep adding races until you run out of races to add. I personally can't wait to play as a snakeman from akavir.

"keep adding" is not as easy to do as it is to say. Each race must have a good background, a culture, some specificity, some inner depth, hopefully some particular animations. I'd rather they do what they promissed, to make all the races look and feel more distinct than in the previous installments. Ading new races would not help in this respect.

Actually, I'm fine with the variety of races. I agree with The Skyrim Blog, 10 is enough. If you can't play with mods, then you have to make the best of that. Extraordinary races like that won't ever be in the Elder Scrolls.

For the record, there is a canine (or more specifically, vulpine) race in the lore, which modders have added to Oblivion: http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Lore:Lilmothiit

If mods come to the Xbox, then you get a pretty good chance of being able to play one - and a werewolf mod will almost certainly be made.

Stuck with 10 races? What other games do you even get close to that range of options. TES has always been about giving the player a great number of options and this is another thing that they have delivered on. As it was said before, everyone has an opinion of what they would like added but the lore has pretty much been set now and any additions would be massively lore breaking without a ton of background work.

As there are the Kahjit I was always secretly hoping for the possibility of a canine character,

Khajiit aren't based on a domestic cat but a lion.

If they were going to make a canine inequivalent it'll be a hyena or something. Just because people have cats as pets its as though dog loving TES fans assume khajiits are solely for cat lovers.

When the England football team have three lions on their shirt you don't hear people saying "I wish it was three dogs"

Ask many a man what their favorite animal is and a large majority would say a lion or a tiger. Its got nothing to do with having pets.

There is also a monkey / gorilla beast race featured in TES lore. Would that be better?

technically they should also only see in black and white but that would make playing a khajiit very dull.

Its like infrared vision. That is why a zebra has black and white stripes as the lion can't see them yet anyone with colour vision can see them a mile away. How the Zebra genes worked that out I'll never understand

Understandable entirely. Not really much I can say though. Other than I don't go for the statistically suitable race. BTW I have only suggested canine, not domesic animals.
