stumbling upon a bear cub

Post » Fri Feb 18, 2011 7:56 pm

"oh, so cute! a little bear cub!"

...

"wait a sec. if you're here, then that means... oh crap."

*ROAR*

*screaming in pain while getting chewed*

wouldn't that be awesome? and not even so difficult to achieve with radiant AI. in a unique landscape for oblivion, there's a nice spot in the redwoods with a kodiak bear guarding her cubs... thankfully she's not aggressive towards the player. but she sure it towards other stuff... saved my butt more than once while getting attached by wolf packs ( yes, packs, thanx to WAC ) in the area.

but yeah, the real point of the OP for those wandering is that more realistic wildlife is easily achievable. there's a morrowind mod that does it for heaven's sake! it's awesome to witness cliffraces nests on top of tree branches, nix hounds protecting their younglings...

not all creatures should be fully grown armed and dangerous.

please do give us a believable ecosystem, one that does not revolve around the player. when you wander around, there should be stuff happening regardless of if you're personally involved or not. wolves chasing deer and the like, y'know?

thanx bethesda I know you will deliver. and then modders will do the rest. peace.

but do give us mounted combat or you WILL regret it I swear. I am NOT going to dismount from the horse everytime a damn rat wants to die, dammit. it's 2011, don't make me regret II'm not playing ocarina of time instead of TESV. good.

Baby animals. Defenetly a yes. It will be a good way to improve the wildlife and therefore the immersion.

I could see this happening - there was something similar with the Bighorners (I think that's right anyway) and the Deathclaws in F:NV. I think it would go a long way to making animal behaviour more believable too, i.e. most animals won't bother you unless you get close to their territory or offspring (although that wasn't quite the case with Deathclaws!).

If I kill a bear and turn it into a couch, I'd like to make throwpillows out of the cubs. It's just cruel to separate them.

<---------------- Here is one cub whose "Dad" is never far away from. :D

It would be a good idea, if I came across a group of animals with cubs I gave them a wide berth in FNV (unless they attacked me first).

Something else that might be fun since giant spiders have been confirmed. This should be a rare encounter:

You stumble upon a large spider web. The eggs have just hatched and seeing as spiders usually have hundreds if not thousands of young at a time, defeating them will be no easy task. But being the accomplished adventurer that you are, you are able to take them out. It was a tough fight. After all, you were significantly outnumbered. Their bodies lay scattered all over the landscape. After taking a breather, you turn to go home, only to see "Mamma Spider" coming right at you! .....and she's pissed!

YES. A believable ecosystem would be wonderful. Bethesda, pretty pretty please with a cherry on top? Include something at least that moves in the direction of an ecosystem, using the Radiant AI.

Believable ecosystem would be nice but it s preferable to be let done by modders as morrowins and oblivion.

I would prefer believable behavior from animals. Wounded animals usally flee unless crippled. The are some exeptions but those are usually relatively tiny.

Talking about animals, on so called sentient races it would be nice too to have a morale system so they could surrender or flee, depending on morale, life remaining, player fame or infame, and reason for battle.
Would be nice to be able to see someone beg for his life and trading items for it, so we dont have necessarily have to kill it to have something or get some look.

A "surrender or die" shout would be awesome and refreshing.

well, it's much easier to loot a corpse in my experience, so begging probably won't do much good.

I want this too! Something like red dead redemption only better...
If you saw horses there would be more than just 1 random horse standing around. You would see a pack of wolves, birds that flew on tree's and snakes were awesome too.. you nwould hear the rattle but that's pretty much untill you looked down to see a rattle snake at your feet... o man

I can certainly agree that more realistic animal behavior would benefit Skyrim, if nothing else, not every animal should be automatically hostile to the player. I'd also like to see wolves hunt in packs as opposed to just wandering alone, and maybe see predators chasing their prey, killing it, and actually having animations for eating it instead of seemingly just killing it to sate some sort of desire to kill just for the sake of killing. I don't necessarily need a complex ecosystem simulation going on while I'm not around to see it, but I at least want the illusion that animals are actually struggling to survive instead of just waiting around for me to pass by so they can throw themselves onto my sword.

there was something similar to this in HL2, where you went through all these tunnels, killing all of these little grubs, and at the end you are speeking to a vortigaunt (mythical creature a la Valve) who says something like, "you didn't kill any of the young, did you? That makes them angry and gives a path to where we are..."

Really? You know, I'm embarrassed to admit this, but I've never actually played through Half Life 2. :blush2:

I've never played Half Life 1 or 2. In fact, I don't think I've ever even seen anything about them except the box art.

Not sure why that would be embarrassing.

Well, thanks. Most PC gamers have played it though and some would argue it being one of the major landmarks of PC gaming. Maybe one day I'll get around to it. I just haven't yet. I probably spent too many years playing Morrowind...lol.

A more realistic ecosystem is a must.

Something I missed in past games are realistic eco systems that include prey. It seems the only prey in Vvardenfell and Cyrodiil are kwama, guars, mudcrabs, deer, horses and a few more. And the predators only hunt down humans for some reason... There should be so many more, like squirrels, birds, a few fish species that DON'T kill you and maybe even insects if Beth are willing to go that far. But that's not important, the main thing is that there can't possibly exist 10 different predators every hundred meter. It makes the game feel somewhat cheap. Make the encounters a little less common and more exciting, while you can still see prey animals roaming around. Imagine you're wandering in the snowy pine forest. You see a squirrel running up a tree as you walk the trail. Later on (maybe 100 meters down the road) you can see a group of elks walk around among the trees. All of a sudden, one of those elks gets attacked by a troll, and another fight unveils. There can be dense monster zones as well, but they shouldn't be evenly scattered. Hunting grounds for different predators would be great. If you want to level up, go into a cave or to a place where the trolls (if ou want to hunt trolls, that is) usually hunt.

About hunting - you shouldn't be able to chase after a deer, wolf (all wolves shouldn't attack you, perhaps only when they're in packs) or a squirrel as they are way too fast. Instead you could perhaps set up traps or use your bow and arrow. Also, fishing would be great.
