stupid game wont let me load my save : IV

i saved my latest game, then left and ate a few things. came back, tried to load my game (i just chose the load latest save option or w/e it is) and it had me in the imperial city, even though the place where i saved it just an hour prior was in anvil infront of the prophet! i tried to do a manual save only to discover, it wasnt there! i reloaded the game, still wasnt there! i looked in the saved games folder, and it's not there!

WTF i know for a fact i saved it, i made a note to do that right before i exited! i save it there's no way around that, and my stupid game just [censored] deleted my own save.

wtf happened? is it going to do this again if i try to continue? is there anyway to recover the game i know for a fact i saved?

By chance was your autosave also missing and do you have a long list of saves?

If you have a long list, check at the bottom for your last save, sometimes the game puts em down there for no reason....

the autosave is what it loaded. and i only have three other saves in there, none of which are it. i still have the character (it appears to be an autosave from right before i fast-traveled to anvil). arent auto-saves from fast-travels supposed to save after you arrive rather than right before you leave? the only thing wrong is that my manual save isnt there.

all i did was talk to the prophet, i could go through it again but i dont see the point if it's just going to delete all my manual saves anyway....or worse yet completely at random!

edit: i just tried it again, apparently it wont let me do a manual save, everytime i do it it never appears in the list, and ontop of that my auto-save doesn't update either! even though the game does give me a notification that it's saving. it told me it auto-saved as soon as i arrived in anvil (even though it didnt) and when i tried a manual save it told me 'save successful', even though it's nowhere in site!

just as a note, i alt-tabbed out of character creation to look up some sample dunmer names before i went back into the game and continued. could that have done something?

forget it, i just started another save. auto-save is working fine and manual save is working fine.

For future reference, that was likely the problem.

Problem
As soon as I get out of the prison (in the beginning) I can't save any more! What should I do?
Cause
One possible cause (described in the Readme file) is pressing the Tab key while editing your character's name
Solution
Change your character's name at the console: player.SetActorFullName "Player Name".
Workaround
Load a save game from before you left the prison, and edit your character's name. Be careful while editing the name to not press the 'Tab' key (i.e., do not try to Alt-Tab out of Oblivion).
