AI & stupid NPC!

Post » Fri Aug 12, 2011 1:02 pm

I didn't want the bandit to know exactly where the player was. I wanted him to enter some sort of seek and destroy AI state, ie look around for the player. Seek and destroy type AI has been possible since the first Thief game. Actually, I find it funny that a game released in 1998 will probably have better stealth gameplay than Skyrim.

So you know exactly how that other npc would have acted given enough time to? (as in if todd hadn't immediately killed him in mere moments)

Without that knowledge there is no possible way that you can say that there is no "seek and destroy" ai...

3 seconds is not "mere moments" in terms of reaction time.

Stop making excuses for lazy AI.

I think the AI will be an improvement to OB, but hey, I haven't even played the game yet. Lets not judge too soon.

How have I ignored your posts? If the NPC was actually shocked, he wouldn't have pulled out his sword. Again:
Bethesda apparently can't implement basic seek and destroy AI into their games, yet somehow you think they are able to give the AI the ability to experience complex emotions like shock?

there is definitely no excuse at all, i'm pretty sure any sneak level could've pulled off that shot from that distance without getting detected, so thats no excuse. and as for saying "he was in shock"....really? is that what this world is coming to?

i love bethesda games but i hate The AI they are doing, in oblivion the AI was awkward and i believe skyrim will have the same AI,

EXAMPLE: in the skyrim gameplay trailer you see the hero in a cave shoots an arrow and kill 1 NPC who is standing directly infront of another NPC, the "still standing" NPC didnt react to the fact that his friend just died infront of him, now i dont mean he needs to cry or moan, but he act like nothing happend until another arrow killed him to!.

that is kind of stupid, they should improve the AI do react to simple things like that.
"reaction AI" should be the priorty, dead body = alert, runing for cover, informing guards/other enemies, or Runing away.

this isnt easy to do but it have been done before in many games. what do you think?

Dude, you said everything. I can't add anymore to your speech. Thx.

List of most used excuses for Skyrim
1. The game is still in Alpha!
2. It's an open world game, it doesn't have to be perfect.
3. It looked fine to me.
4. DERP WHY YOU HATE NO BE ON FORUM TRO
5. Todd Howard.

Basically, I don't understand how anybody can try to justify what is obviously flawed AI.

I never said he was "shocked" i said that 3 seconds is NOT enough time to react in the way you want.
I also said that you have no way of knowing that he wouldn't have enacted your search and destroy routine if he had lived long enough.

You mentioned what you do when shot upon with airsoft guns; but that is not an equal comparison, the three seconds after that is plenty of time because you were expecting shots, danger. These bandits were sitting in their cave/hideout believing they were safe. You reacting to danger when you know it is there and reacting to surprises are two completely different situations and must be seen as such.

That was my point, not that he was in "shock." But that your argument that 3 seconds is long enough to enact "search and destroy". It's not, its just enough time for him to draw a sword and get shot.

When i pointed this out, you ignored it and went back to pointless posts about Todd's promises and riots in london...

It's reasonable to expect that in 3 seconds he would at least make the slightest movement, or at least start moving towards his friend's body to examine it. The AI is looking to be just as bad as Oblivion's.

And i maintain that in reality that is barely enough time for him to unsheathe his sword. But whatever, we agree to disagree; all i know is that none of us know what he would have done if he had had time to do more than draw his sword.

edit: given that it was a complete surprise and no one would be expected to draw their sword immediately in such a circumstance.

That is exactly where my problem with the AI begins. The bandit draws his sword the instant that his friend is hit. A more realistic response would be if the bandit were to say something like, "(insert friend name here), are you okay?" Then, assuming he wasn't already dead too, he could go over and examine the body, or he could draw his sword and enter a "seek and destroy" state where he would actively search for the player.

But, whatever, I guess we will have to agree to disagree.

why does everyone seem to believe that the developers factor in so much human-like attributes, like the level of safeness that the bandits felt? come on.

.......its not like the NPC didnt do anything when his friend died, just like all TES games when his buddy was killed he IMMEDIATLY drew his weapon And STOOD there. he didnt turn, he didnt say whos there, he was inert and he got shot, in FONV if you kill a person in sneak their allies MOVE or take cover, this guy stood their like Derp and did nothing

again this happened OVER AND OVER it happened in JAN when the previewers talked about it, it Happened at E3 and the quakecon build was the "latest Build" and it still Happened.

Its ok, trust me if you disagree with what beth is doing or their work you wont be killed because of it, its Ok to see somethings wrong.

This could all be so easily solved by adding a nearly immediate "surprised" animation: crouching low to the ground, drawn sword, stepping away from the body, and simply yelling out to the player or expressing some fearful words. None of these actions are outside the scope of this game's development. As it is, the npc behavior seemed wooden and hardly organic. How can one deny the gut reaction that the npc action was not entirely believable and could use some tweaking. Whether or not things were in slow-mo is completely besides the point as we should have still seen triggered the appropriate response, albeit slowed down.

1. How is the AI supposed to know where the Arrow came from? when an arrow is moving at full speed its near impossible to see, esspecially in a dark cave. And the arguement that the AI could just look at his companion to see where the arrow is sticking in this is assuming the dead bandit fell down perfectly and is now laying in the same exact position he was standing in.

2. How is the AI going to take cover if they dont know where the arrow come from? Plus the way the game is made the most the Bandit could do would be to crouch next to some rock. Its not like the bandit could go prone.

3. And even if the bandit was to run away where would he run? he doen't know which way is safe.

4. And yes the comparison to reaction time when playing airsoft is just dumb because in airsoft no one in front of you just died, you are not about to die. Now say if you we out in a dark field alone with a friend and he just got laid out by a silenced sniper how prepared would you be to take the most appropriate immidiate reaction. probably not in most cases, just like in the game, you would just stand there in a mixture of panic, fear, and confusion. At least for the same amount of time that bandit did. I get the feeling a lot of you are trying to argue that 4 seconds is a whole lot of time.

The Bandit drew his own weapon and prepared to make a stand while keeping his eyes peeled for any sign of movement.

Who cares where the Arrow came from, MOVE

But the Bandit could have MOVED

DOESNT MATTER DONT STAND IN PLACE

All these array of emotions your going on about isnt present in game, stop trying to give excuses

To get rid of all your questions and answer, stick to this:

Would YOU REALLY not notice if a person next to you got hit by an archer?

So did not this bandit in the example.

Even although this, I will buy, play and love the game. I just want to end this discussion, right this specific AI behaviour was terribly bad looking graphically, thats it.

Sounds like a broken, exploitative ability in my opinion, unless of course NPC archers can do something similar to us.

The person getting time slowed wouldn't know it, you can't tell them aren't doing it. Bullet time is to help human players aim, I assure you AI don't need help, they are basically aimbots.

Would you prefer the immediate knowledge of your location?

Wow. Typical response. I'd at least expect someone who's witnessed his friend being killed by an arrow in front of his eyes show a reaction like "GAH! [censored]! Wha- Where-" While desperately looking around...

Standing still isn't what I'd do.
